About
Slate Restaurant is one of only two Relais & Châteaux Restaurants in Maine. The renowned, gourmet restaurant serves a tasty farm-to-table menu inspired by seasonally available ingredients from our garden or one of our many local farms. Our handsome wood-paneled cocktail lounge offers fine wines, custom seasonal cocktails and mocktails, and small bites. Located at the Blair Hill Inn and overlooking Maine’s largest glacier lake, Slate Restaurant sits commandingly atop a 20′ high, 900′ long fieldstone wall. Its hillside perch provides one of the most beautiful, expansive lake views in the world. Once a gentleman’s estate and breeding farm built in 1891, it is now a finely restored boutique hotel & restaurant with exquisite décor and exceptional service.

We chose this restaurant based upon the high reviews it has received. We agree! Fine dining with a fixed menu (two choices for entree.) The chef treated us to a fried oyster sample followed by two primary courses: tuna tartar (amazing!) and lamb (sorry but not a lamb fan.) I chose the salmon entree and my husband selected a grilled steak. Choice of dessert was probably the best crème brûlée I’ve ever had. Kudos to the chef and the friendly service staff! Location and views high above the lake were exceptional given the fall foliage.

My husband and I visited this restaurant on a recent trip to Moosehead Lake. Fine dining at it's best. Every single thing we ordered was outstanding. We started our meal with Oysters and Lobster Bisque and the fresh bread they provided. The bread was warm and crusty and came with decadent compound butter. For entrees my husband ordered the pork chop and I had the diver scallops and both were absolutely delicious. Some of the best food we've ever eaten. The atmosphere was peaceful and the service was top notch.

The meal my husband and I had the other night was one of the best we have ever had. Totally delicious, beautifully presented, a lovely experience from the beginning, when we had a drink on the deck enjoying a spectacular view, to the end, when we kept saying "Wow" over and over. We have been to many high end restaurants, but this tops them all due to the setting and service. Just incredible. The bill at the end was $350, which is quite a bit more than we usually pay, but we didn't mind and felt it was worth the cost. 6 courses for $99 plus two cocktails, 2 glasses of wine, and a big tip. It's a very special place.

My order - halibut - was very salty and I sent it away. I then ordered an oyster appetizer and was surprised to get only 4 small oysters which were good but not worth the price. My wife ordered shrimp which were slightly less salty than my meal but was delicious nonetheless. Overall, it did not live up to the hype and certainly was not worth the price that I paid. I will only return if my wife wishes it.

This was a dinner that we would praise in a large city, and really impressive in a small town. The menu has only a couple of choices for each course, which makes perfect sense for the small size of the facility and the market, but we would have been pleased to select any of the options. The food was extremely good, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The quantify of food is relatively small, but we felt quite satisfied by the end of our dinner. The service was warm, attentive and helpful. We chose the wine pairing with our dinner, and the pairings aligned delightfully with the food, and each explained and presented in an informative and fun manner. Oh yes, the setting also is lovely -- dramatic views down the hillside to Moosehead Lake and to the setting sun behind the mountains, beautiful and elegant decor within the inn, and nicely spaced and arranged tables. Next time we are in town, we will eat here again, for sure!

What an amazing restaurant. The food was fabulously delectable. My husband and I wanted to lick our plates. Everything served was delicious. The presentation of the dishes inviting. The chefs ability to combine flavors was spectacular and tantalizing. The staff professional and attentive. A wonderful experience. The restaurant was clean and inviting. The views spectacular. Worth every penny. We will return.

Blair Hill Inn is a premium restaurant with fantastic views, beautiful dining rooms, excellent service, and high quality food. It is one of the best anywhere and here in the Moosehead Lake region, it is remarkable. However, if you are hungry for a hearty meal, the 6-course meal at a sedate pace will be frustrating. Everything is very well executed, beautifully presented, delicious, but in small portions. I left still hungry at the end. For the premium price, I found it to be disappointing. I still recommend going there. It is the definition of fine dining,

All I can really say is "thank you" to Ruth and her team for welcoming a solo traveler in with genuine warmth and hospitality. I had a wonderful dining experience. The view and the chill vibe were simply spot on. Probably a tick or two past that actually. And the food. I've learned inventive and delicious don't always go hand-in-hand, but when it hits, it hits. This chef's cuisine was an absolute hit! Every course. Deft hands are indeed at work in the back of this house. And the service was perfect – friendly, subtle and professional from the bar to the dining room. I highly recommend getting there before your reservation and sipping a perfectly crafted Old Fashioned (or any cocktail that tickles your fancy) on the wide, comfortable porch. The view, with the sun slipping behind the mountains surrounding Moosehead Lake, is guaranteed to melt away any stress you may have brought in.

This was our first visit to the newly redesigned restaurant, now called “Slate.” Everything was done to perfection! The scrumptious food was beautifully plated. The waitress was knowledgeable, attentive and personable. We were warmly welcomed by the owner, restaurant manager, and bar tender. This is a restaurant that deserves nothing but accolades!!

Had dinner for New Year's here, beautiful place but the food was highly overpriced for the quality. I have been to many fine dining establishments, and this was a great disappointment overall. Choices were very limited and choice of main entrees were weak at best. Will not return.

Beth, I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy your New Year’s Eve Dinner and the festive live music. I’m surprised by your disappointment with the menu as it was published several weeks before the event and you were very positive about everything when I checked in with you several times during the evening. I wish you would have shared your feedback at the time so we could have had an opportunity to improve your experience. Thank you for sharing your feedback and we wish you all the best. Jenn

From the moment you are warmly welcomed into this gorgeous mansion to the last bite of your meal, everything is done to perfection. . . Cocktails on the porch overlooking beautiful Moosehead Lake. RUDE- these people, at least the ones answering the phones are rude as hell. Will not ever attempt to eat here again after how condescending they are on the phone.

We ventured up the hill to dine at the Blair Hill Inn on a rainy Tuesday night, and were greeted by the new owner and invited into the sitting room for a drink before dinner. I was transported to English country manors, with the grace and quality that come with attention to detail and worldly experience. We reluctantly left the beautifully appointed bar and were given a window table looking out over Moosehead Lake -- stunning scenery. The evening was truly delightful -- the staff was Maine-friendly, the sunset was perfect, and the food and wine were superb. (When we discovered it was a tasting menu, there was a bit of a groan because we had just come off of two rather disappointing tasting experiences in Quebec City, but Chef dazzled us with perfectly prepared local delights that suited both omnivorous and herbivorous palates.) Definitely would go back, and if you like fine dining and are in the area, it's a must.
