I have been addicted to White Castle hamburgers since the late 1940s. My only regret is today I live miles away from any White Castle location. No exaggeration. So you can imagine my reaction when I read a travel article that listed Powers Hamburgers in...Fort Wayne, Indiana, as one of the top five places in America where you can get a classic hamburger, I had to see for myself. Our recent trip through Indiana gave me the opportunity. Located at 1401 South Harrison Street, Powers Hamburgers was established in 1940, a tiny roadside spot greasy spoon known for slider-like burgers and old-fashioned American comfort food. Power Hamburgers, which has been likened to White Castle and Krystals, is a basic slider with fresh meat, fried onions and a bun. The buyer can add a condiment of his or her choosing, like mustard or relish or ketchup or a pickle, but not lettuce or tomatoes. Michael Hall, who has owned Powers Hamburgers since 1999, laughingly boasts that he is his own best customer, having gained 50 pounds during his 23 years of ownership. Open from 11 to 7 on Monday and 7 to 8 Tuesday through Saturday, Powers looks like a White Castle from the outside. So what do I think about the comparison. Powers is bigger, messier and covered in grilled onion slices, not bits. Add ketchup and a pickle, as I do with my White Castles, and it's hard to tell the difference. Except there is more to a Powers burger than a White Castle--and it costs considerably more, too. Like White Castle, Powers serves breakfast until 10:30 a.m. A plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast make for a quick pick-me-up in the morning.More

Powers Hamburgers is great! You have to try their sliders - very excellent. Their chili is excellent as well. Definitely recommend very highly!

Really? These greasy things are pitiful compared to White Castle sliders-ack!!!! In all honesty I have no idea why anyone would accept these things versus a real slider as what is offered by White Castle.

I don’t make it downtown often, but when I do I try to swing by this little joint. There is usually a wait, but with COVID and it being a Thursday night, I was in and out in 10 minutes. The sliders will probably end...up tearing up your gut, but they are well worth it. I can eat at least 5 at one sitting. I usually get everything on it, but this time around I held the mustard. The onions just hit the spot. I highly recommend that you try it at least once, you will be back!More

I've been a happy customer (understatement) since burgers were @ 10 for a dollar. I now live out of state and there's nothing like them here! They are outstanding and the greatest burgers you'll get anywhere, especially if you love onions and mustard! You can...bet that when I'm in the "Fort," I stop in at least a couple of times and get some wonderful, delectable burgers that take me back years to my childhood when my taste buds were first exposed to this outstanding, incredible delicacy when I was walking by the old location that was on Maumee Avenue! I only wish I could invest in them, renovate and expand their existing downtown location and perhaps open some here in this state/city too. But, for now I hope they're always successful enough to stay in existence and thrive!! They have the BEST burgers and other items too!! The other popular franchise doesn't compare at all to me!!!! They have always had a very unique niche in the burger, restaurant world!More

I was up here for work and somebody told me you have to try powers. You are not supposed to say it but it is a version of a white castle. The burger was good. My only complaint is I like onions but I don't...like them in a huge pile. It is worth stopping byMore

We asked at the hotel for some place authentic or unique to Fort Wayne and this was absolutely it. Great slider burgers - definitely get the cheese burgers. At first glace this might seem like the kind of place that takes cash only but they...do in fact take credit cards as well. Also important to know is that there a limited number of seats at the counter - and that's it. Many people seem to take out/away.More

I am a life long citizen of the Fort Wayne area and finally made it to Power's Hamburgers. A friend and I went there for lunch. He had been there many times through the years. I have had their hamburgers before, but I had never...been to the restaurant myself. It is a good thing I knew what I wanted to eat because if I wanted to change my mind I would have had to step outside. The place is so small. Anyway, we ordered a sack of the little burger belly bombs. Boy were they good. I hope to visit again soon and try other items on the menu. This is a great place to go if you are looking for nostalgia and tasty food.More

If you like sliders then you won't be disappointed. The burgers are the best I have ever had. They have great malts as well. they don't have a huge menu but what they do have is good.

Late one night, in town for a visit, I went to Powers for a few burgers. There were only about 4 or 5 others there. The onions were spread on the 4 burgers in a very uneven way. Hard to separate the sandwiches. AND the...small burger patties (?) were not even close to being centered in the buns. Come on....I have been going to Powers for YEARS and these were the least perfect I have ever had. They were not BUSY, the sandwiches could have been put together better. Please stop taking things for granted and try to put out the slider you are known for, not the one you are doing now. The new Powers cannot stand on reputation for long.More

I’ve been eating here my entire life. Seriously I’m pretty sure my mother took me here mere moments after I was out of the womb. Now that l live in another State I make it a priority to stop anytime I am back in town....I hear of someone going to Ft Wayne ? I tell them they must stop here. I’ve gotten calls of thanks for this. The burgers are fresh, tasty and made right there. The onions make the experience. One that will stay with you scent wise on your clothes for days quite frankly. There are what WC and Krystal want to be. But that’s like saying a Ferrari is what a Hyundai and a Vega want to be. Often imitated but never duplicated this is the best burger place in town. No it’s not a Gastro Pub, but it’s the quintessential greasy spoon burger place in America. As a free tip, get the chili as well.More

This very much has a White Castle feel to it with the tiny hamburgers. Not a lot of places to sit here, but the staff is friendly and it is low cost.

Just hamburgers with lots of great grilled onions. Meat is fresh tasting, onions are great, & it’s just a great “locals” place. Only seats 15 people (at bar stools) and you will leave smelling of grilled onions! Great place for some comfort food hamburgers!
