We loved The Lucky Platter. Funky, laid-back decor.
The food was wonderful. I highly recommend the pot-pie. Wonderful crust and PACKED with chicken and the gravy (which is very rich and flavorful) comes on the side, so you get to decide how much or little you want. I paired it with the beets. They were resplendent. Walnuts and feta complemented them perfectly.
My husband had the shrimp Po'boy.
Nice Cajun spice and fried green tomatoes. He paired his sandwich with the mac and cheese. Yum!
Our waitstaff was attentive without hovering and everyone there was kind and welcoming.

I love Lucky Platter for a casual dinner out. The hanger steak, burgers, and salmon dishes are my favorites. Plus, they have yummy signature cocktails. Breakfast and lunch are solid here, but dinner is special.

We went for lunch. My husband had Chilaquilas and I had a Tandoori Salmon Salad, both of which were very good. The service was great! Our waiter was very attentive. They showed old TV shows. We saw part of a 60’s Batman Show and a He-Man episode.

Atmosphere is nice.
Bit of a disorganized place, staff seem bit vague (getting our drinks wrong, missing ingredients that were on the menu description but not on the dish I ordered, and also not knowing if we'd ordered or who was taking our order).
I had the fried green tomato eggs Benedict which was tasty but really really TINY (and had missing items that were on menu but not on the plate), very expensive for the portion size
Latte was very weak, mostly milk and not great.
Fresh squeezed OJ was definitely a bottled OJ not fresh.
I feel like maybe they were all having a bit of an 'off' day, but I'll go again to see and alter my review if I have a different experience.

Poor service started the moment I walked in. I asked for a table for two, indicating that I was meeting a friend who was not there yet and was denied a table. I was asked to wait until my friend arrived to be seated. The restaurant was not packed, plenty of tables available. When my friend arrived 5 minutes later, we were seated at a tiny booth by the bathroom. We decided that since the place was quite empty, we would move and did so asking a server if it was ok to do so. He said sure. A few minutes later a server came to us and said we could sit there, but we needed to be finished by 10AM because the section was reserved for a large party. He told us that gave us 50 minutes to eat. We offered to move again but he said no, 50 minutes was plenty of time. ??? So we ate, and we watched as 10AM approached. And then we went past our deadline.... and no large party ever materialized. Server tried to rush us off by giving us the check, but we were hot by then and wouldn't budge. I can't even rate the food because I felt the need to fast shovel it in my mouth before I could even appreciate it. No tips from us. If you want repeat customers, don't treat them like garbage. We are local gals, and you can bet we will not be back, and we will direct our friends and visitors elsewhere.

First off, I saw 3 rats in the back kitchen area. They even had a sign to leave the doors shut because of the rats. I'd say more about where I saw the rats come from but I'd rather get beaten with barb wire baseball bats than give this place any assistance.
It's a real shame that Evanston trademarks like Pineyard, Davis Street Fish Market, and Tommy Nevins bit the dust, but because this place is the only restaurant in Mid/South Evanston that many 50+ year old boomers know, they get all the tired old people who want to sit down and talk since they are too old to do things anymore. It only exists because there is no other sit down restaurant in the area that serves regular food.
They couldn't even get a BBQ chicken sandwich right. Even while starving, the sandwich had no taste at all. I had to drink a sip of water with each bite because no saliva was coming out. The bun and chicken were dry and I guess they made cuts on their BBQ sauce budget because there was none. The fries were wet and limp and half cold like they came out of a freezer. So $18 for a sandwich that tastes worse than a $3 chicken sandwich from a gas station. Never seen a place mess up a BBQ sandwich. Even a child can make one, lol. They even messed up cornbread. Damp and half warm half cold like they came out of a freezer.
Not just that, the chicken had hard gristle. Gristle is inedible and can't be chewed. I had to spit into a napkin like 10 times during my meal.
I've been in their kitchen many times over the years because I work within the building and it is ALWAYS dirty. So dirty they had a rat problem a month ago. I've seen the workers go from emptying the trash and handling mop buckets to handling food every time.

The Lucky Platter has great food and wonderful staff! I’ve never been disappointed. Brunch is fabulous! They have the best pot pie and great fried chicken- not greasy. I eat there often because it’s the best!

Interesting menu beyond the usual burgers, salads etc. Chicken pot pie delicious. Appealing and different choices for sides.
Wine and cocktail menu more sophisticated than expected.
Have also been here for lunch, which has terrific breakfast options .

This place is not your typical restaurant in the sense that it maintains the same menu all the time. And it's not your typical restaurant because everything is made from scratch. We've eaten here many times before, and while some dishes are a mainstay, you can always count on something new. I've never had a bad dish here.
I had the chicken pot pie and the mac and cheese yesterday. The mac and cheese was awesome. But I do want to say the chicken pot pie was a bit dry, even after I scraped every drop of the gravy that is provided into the pie. However, the taste overcomes the dryness.
You can't get tired of the "home-cooked" flavors of their dishes. Lucky Platter scores tops in this category.

We are brunch here on a recent visit to Chicago, since we were staying in Evanston.
Two of us had the Tandoori Chicken Salad, one with the apricot chutney and one without. There really was nothing Tandoori about it. Unfortunately the chicken was quite bland, and did not live up to its name. The omelets the others had were good, but pretty standard. The breakfast potatoes and coffee were both good. Service was good.
Overall, not sure why this restaurant got the #1 rating in Evanston. It was pleasant, but nothing really stood out and things were not as flavorful as the menu led you to believe. A solid B as a grade. If you are in the area, worth stopping by, but not worth a special trip.

Lucky Platter has an extensive menu, and the food is very good. The decor in the restaurant is much better since they cleared out much of the clutter. Our server, Tahnja, was great. She was attentive, pleasant, and professional. Definitely worth the visit.

Broad menu with lots of excellent salads, sandwiches, and main dishes. Food is well prepared with some innovative takes. We all like the pumpkin soup--which they seem to have all the time, not just in fall.

Since 1991, Lucky Platter in Evanston, Illinois, has been spell-binding its customers and exciting their palettes and their senses with an eclectic menu that features creative takes on comfort food, such as chicken pot pie, Yankee pot roast, apple cider mimosa, Cajun shrimp Carbonara, Moroccan vegetable tagine, fried green tomato Benedict and Tandoori salmon salad, even home-made lemonade. Located at 514 Main Street, a block east of Chicago Avenue, it is open daily at 7:30 a.m. For breakfast, I can't resist the Classic Eggs Benedict with poached eggs, honey baked ham and hollandaise sauce served on toasted cornbread and a bowl of steel cut oatmeal with spiced apple and raisin compote. My wife starts with a fruit medley and finishes wth Cinnamon Raise French Toast with a cornflake crusted raisin brioche topped with powdered sugar and strawberries with home-made breakfast sausage patties. We enjoy lunch, too. My favorite is chicken pot pie, slow cooked chicken with vegetables in a home-made pastry crust and gravy with a cup of tomato bisque. Also a chopped salad with red peppers, corn, tomatoes, red onions, carrots, green peppers and bleu cheese. My wife usually has a Tandoori salmon salad, a seven-ounce grill tandoori salmon on a bed of mixed greens with sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, feta and garlic croutons and a fried chicken sandwich with fried chicken, tomatoes, ranch slaw and pickled relish on a buttery bun. Wash it all down with glasses of home-made lemonade and home-made berry lemonade. Dessert? We always choose to share two of three--key lime pie, pumpkin pie and home-made butterscotch pudding topped with whipped cream with two sugar cookies. We never leave the Lucky Platter hungry or disappointed. And we always have time to enjoy the American folk art decor.

I've only been for breakfast, but the vibes are good, and the choice of eggs Benedict four different ways for about ten bucks is enticing. We thought the crab cake version's crab cakes were a bit soft (a cruel judgement would be slightly mushy), but that's the crab cake conundrum: firm em up with bread crumbs (read adultrating) or use much bigger chunks of crab (prohibitively expensive.) The lunch and dinner menus are equally engaging. Burgers and sandwiches are still well priced in the evening but the dinner menu entrees ring in at close to $17, which seems to be pushing a bit for a diner/lunchroom.
