Heard from a friend that this was the place for great cajun food. It is! We had red beans and rice, shrimp and grits and dirty beignets. Fantastic. The person who took our order was helpful and courteous. He offered to bring the food to...our car while we waited in the parking lot for our food we had the pleasure of meeting the owner Mr. B. He was awesome too. We loved everything about the cafe. We will definitely be back soon. Don't miss this one, great food!!!!More
We tried the trio of shrimp etouffe, jambalaya and shrimp/grits for lunch. All were delicious! Due to pandemic, everything is placed in takeaway containers and there isn’t any interior seating, but the courtyard was a small oasis to enjoy our lunch and sweet tea. Met...Mr. B the owner and he was delightful and welcoming. The neighborhood is not a tourist district, though I really enjoyed seeing some of the murals depicting the heritage of this community. We’ve already decided that Chiefs should be the catering vendor for our Super Bowl party. So glad we took the opportunity to step outside our usual haunts to try Chiefs.More
Chief's is a charming, local restaurant with delicious, authentic creole selections. Don't miss the gumbo, which is well balanced and flavorful -- a true southern comfort food. We love the fact that you can bring your own wine....makes for an outstanding value. The beignets were...a bit of a disappointment as they were heavy on the night we visited.
Service is warm, friendly, and like eating in someone's home.More
Probably the best meal in all of St Pete...far better than all the ritzy places on the water...wonderful service fabulous jambalaya and gumbo...we also misplaced an item here,,,called the next day..they had found it...love these people
After seeing all the good reviews we had high expectations.
We were greeted by one of the owners and she was great.
Our server was pretty clueless.
We started with onion rings which were pretty good but not great.
We both ordered shrimp and grits...which was pretty disappointing. It was literally shrimp in a bowl of cheese grits with a small cup of sauce on the side. The sauce was tasty but overall a boring dishMore
We had dinner at Chief's Creole Cafe last night and really enjoyed it. We sat in their outdoor dining area. Our server, Valerie was extremely friendly. Service was great. We ordered Jambalaya and Gumbo. Valerie also brought us a side of fried okra (on the...house) and salads with a delicious mango basil dressing. Both the gumbo and jambalaya were delicious - the gumbo was mild with a thicker sauce. The jambalaya was thinner and spicy, but not too hot. Both were very good. Both were served over white rice. We also ordered a side of collard greens. They were very tasty, but a bit salty. Valerie brought us (again on the house) a bourbon apple bread pudding for dessert that was one of the best bread puddings I've ever had. Overall delicious - good prices / great food / friendly service. You can't go wrong!More
We will definitely be back. We had the trio pick of shrimp and grits, jambalaya, and gumbo. All were excellent. The garden setting with the center fountain made a perfect brunch. The service was great.
After you’ve toured all the murals in downtown Saint Pete with the help of Paradise Tours, Stop in to Chief’s Creole Café for the best Creole food this side of New Orleans. Caroline and Elihu who are the owners are more than friendly. It’s like...coming home to mom and dad. My first visit was with eight friends and Elihu came to our table and enchanted us with stories of how he and Caroline met, got married, had careers, moved, and found this delightful restaurant and learned how to be Restaurant owners with the help of grandma’s original recipes for Creole food. The gumbo is spectacular, so are the shrimp cheesy grits. I’m going back for the jambalaya and a few other specialties. It’s simply delightful and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. Love the complementary fried okra that they supplied us with at the beginning of the meal. Feel free to plug out a tune on the piano. It’s that kind of place. Friendly all the way.More
RUN to this place before the masses find it! Charming atmosphere and 'grandmas recipes plus great creations(dirty begneits) 9 of us went there on a whim and Mr and Mrs. B were more than welcoming. They told us the entire history of the place and...then asked us to go around and tell then doubt ourselves! Shrimp and grits were amazing! Ill be returning within the week with any houseguests I may have! You can bring your own wine if you choose!More

Thank you for your inquiry. As far as gluten free...the only items that we offer would be the Creole Wings and our Vegetable Medley. To answer your question specifically, we do not soak our grits in chicken broth.
