Wonderful adventure for breakfast! The bakery was pretty sold out by 10am, and just about everything left had chocolate in it. Even the banana bread. If chocolate isn’t your choice or allergic, you’re out of luck. The coffee was good, but the grounds surrounding this cafe are its saving Grace! Edible gardens, wonderful beds of flowers and orchards were magnificent. Clean restrooms also!

If Alta were easily walkable from home base, I would be here daily, The bakery is outstanding, not a miss to be found.
Cappuccino...sometimes wonderful, sometimes not.
And just when you thought you knew everything about avocado toast, Alta's version is beautiful to see and a delight to eat..
Lines can be lengthy so the best time for morning coffee is before 07:30; for lunch, either very early or late afternoon You order at the counter and pick up your beverage when called. Food will be brought to your table. Customers bus their dishes.
Seating inside is mostly at communal tables. There is an outdoor space (dogs allowed) with more individual tables.
Especially wonderful is the location of Alta in the old section of Monterey. Looking at the many historic buildings in the area you half expect to see Zorro coming around the corner
Hours are 07:00-16:00 daily.

Dreamy croissants, Warm Golden Milk, Citrus salad with blood red oranges trimmed to perfection, dried kalamata olives, feta cheese and a light vinaigrette dressing unlike anything you have ever tasted...Alta has become our favorite place to take our puppies, and sitting in the warm sun outside the bakery in their lovely patio surrounded by the history of the Cooper Molera home is magical. Every single thing we have ordered has been absolutely delicious, and you will find yourself savoring each bite and marveling at the brilliance of the genius of their chef!

I am very fond of croissants, and when I vist new places I like to test out the local bakeries. Jetlagged after travelling we went up early and found this cafe in a very nice old building. The croissant were really marvellous with a very rich flavour. Loved them!

The croque monsieur was half a piece of toasted bread with cheese and ham. For more than $10! That's absurd. It should be a whole toasted sandwich And the place is a bakery. Bread is probably the cheapest ingredient in a croque monsieur. This was my husband's choice and he was too nice to complain. I had a pretty good buddha bowl. The pastries didn't tempt me.

The friendly, helpful and patient staff added to the exceptional food experience at this downtown Monterey cafe and bakery. Not a long list of lunch options, but enough to choices to satisfy all four of us (each with different selection). Baked bread and pastries/desserts are as attractive as they are tasty.

We tried the avocado toast which looked delicious, but it lacked any depth of flavor which was surprising given the description. That being said the bakery items looked wonderful and the place was packed, so we must of tried the wrong item. We did enjoy the blueberry mimosa which was recommended.

I am a frequent countrywide US and international traveler. In the US there are maybe 5 specialty bakeries as phenomenal as Atla Bakery in Monterey. Want an awesome find. Go to Alta. The team at Alta are so friendly and the baker…OMG….Great.

Don't let the line scare you, it's usually out the door, but well worth the wait. I loved their late, croissant with ham and cheese and their avocado toast was pretty different and amazing as well (see picture). The breads looked awesome as well. I went there for breakfast both days that I was in Monterey. Great place.

Incredible pastries! We went three times for the baked goods, and their donuts are amazing! The cinnamon donut holes and the donut of the day (blackberry peach when we were there iirc) are soooo good! The texture is just perfect, some of the best donuts I've ever had! They sell out quickly too, luckily we got there early :) I also tried the fruit danish, the cinnamon roll, the cardamom pinwheel and the blueberry muffin. Out of those, the cardomom pinwheel was probably my favorite, but they really know what they're doing with pastries in general. We never had the time to try their coffee or anything off the menu, but the cold brew looked very interesting. If we ever come back to Monterey, we'll definitely be stopping here again!

There is often a line down the block, so plan to go early, or late in the day. The food and pastry selections are limited, but the food is good. On my last visit I enjoyed an excellent cappuccino at one of the tables in the sunny courtyard out back. You can take a stroll through the old world garden or take a peek at the beautifully restored old barn where weddings are often held. It's a step back in time to historic Monterey.

Love this cafe - large indoor area but also a nice courtyard for sitting outside. Staff are friendly and helpful. Their pastries are awesome and their coffee drinks are perfect (and I'm picky). I like their food too - have had breakfast (ricotta toast w marmalade yummm), salads and more - and its all really fresh and well made.

I was looking for a place for a light breakfast during a recent trip to Monterey. Alta Bakery & Cafe was about 1/2 mile from my hotel, so I took a nice morning walk through El Estero Park. Given the line of guests waiting to get in the door, I suspected I'd made a good choice. The croissant stuffed with berries was amazingly good. I enjoyed sitting outside in the garden before walking back to the hotel.

Line up, look at all the sweet stuff and couple prepared sandwiches, order and find spot in courtyard or inside. Nice looking and tasty avocado toast and tuna melt. Not real large so their banana chocolate bread was a great finish.

All of the pastries were wonderful, but my 5-stars goes to the quiche. I bought pastries for my breakfast treat, but the quiche became my dinner (took it back to my nearby hotel and kept it in the refrigerator all day). Well worth a visit!
