I was in the mood for some dumplings so I went to Tian's in Chinatown for one of their meat and vegetable dumplings, wonton noodle soup, and an order of juicy pork dumplings. Everything was good, not great, but worth a visit for as the...prices are quite reasonable. This is true of all the dim sum I've tried there from har gow, lo bok go, and other dumplings. Tian's is good for an economical, quick bite to eat in a store that you go to for the food; not for atmosphere.
The meat and vegetable dumpling was good - huge, stuffed full of pork and a smattering of cabbage. A little chili oil and soy sauce added the perfect seasoning for the dumpling.
The wonton noodle soup was a tasty bowl of small bok choy, noodles, wontons, and green onion in broth that owes much of its flavor from the round circles of dried noodles when boiled. Again, the wontons were okay but the dish as a whole was greater than the sum of its parts.
Lastly, the juicy pork dumplings, aka soup dumplings, or siu loong bao in other restaurants were good although not in the Din Tai Fung class but then there's no hour plus wait for a table here. The same sauce with the addition of vinegar makes for a good dipping sauce but ask for slivered ginger to eat with these dumplings. Use chopsticks gently lest you puncture the skin and the juice leaks out.
Food available in the display counters are readily available but noodles, soups, juicy dumplings and other dishes that are cooked to order take 15-20 minutes to emerge from the kitchen. The egg custard tarts look tempting for my next visit.
Tian's is worth a visit and there's even a small parking lot that you enter through a driveway just to the left of the business facade.More
