I have wanted to try Roka for years and never seemed to pull it off from a scheduling perspective. My wife and I were staying nearby and had the chance to stop in on a Sunday night about 6 pm. The place was not busy yet and we were able to get seated with minimal wait. They had plenty of COVID steps in place including masks until you reach your table as well as hand sanitizer being dispensed at the hostess area. Our waiter was friendly and very helpful with the way the menu is arranged. You can come in for a meal focused on sushi and sashimi, wagyu or other steaks, tempura, or a great mix of all of the above. We took the sampler approach and had some fried squid and shrimp tempura to start. Both were fried just right without being greasy or heavy. I liked the shrimp but liked the squid even more; however, the flavored salts that come with the shrimp tempura were worth keeping around to use on it and other dishes. We then had the chef's sampler sashimi, which was fresh, clean and very tasty. Next up was the mushroom hot pot. My best description is an earthy, deeply flavored Japanese mushroom risotto and I could have eaten more of that all night long. We had a clean and fresh cucumber and shishito pepper roll. Our main entree was the skirt steak with chimichurri that was excellent. It had great flavor and was cut perfectly to be tender. My wife had a green tea macha and gin cocktail that was quite good and I really enjoyed my glass of sake. The meal was well worth the price and the experience.

This is a robatayaki restaurant with sushi. Roka has the best sushi in Scottsdale though because of Covid they have a much reduced selection of both sushi and robatayaki. The service is excellent and the quality of food is the best in town. It is pricey relative to some other sushi places, but it is well worth it.

We were on a girls trip and my friend Dana found this gem. We actually went two nights because one night was not enough. We were lucky enough to be seated at Daniel's table. He introduced himself and asked if we were comfortable with him ordering for us. We started with the edamame & vegetable dumplings and moved on to the tiger prawn tempura and spicy tuna roll. It was such a great experience. The wine list was extensive with the perfect wines for us. The service was perfect. I have never felt like such a priority at a restaurant. Daniel was very handsome as well as attentive. We even joked with Norman the manager about how attractive his staff is. Our second night we sat at the chef's bar and spent the evening watching Michael and Riley handcraft all of sushi dishes. It was so much fun! Norman made sure we had Daniel as our waiter again. Again Daniel ordered for us & everything was perfect. We enjoyed the wagyu skirt steak with Chimichurri and dumplings. We are looking forward to going back next February!

This is our first visit to Roka Akor, which was recommended by a local friend.
Reading the other reviews for Roka Akor, you could be forgiven for expecting perfection. Our expectations were high for the taster menu and we had the first surprise that the prices had gone up from the already high $128 to a nose bleeding $145 per person. This only heightened our expectations. It must be fantastic.
The truth is, it's really not that good if you have experienced really good restaurants.
The menu is first unbalanced by a serving of quite spicy peppers which isn't good for the palette going into the next courses, especially as the next is sashimi, which is actually quite good if you have cleansed your palette with water first.
The lobster teriyaki is wonderfully presented, but bland to taste. It was hard to find the lobster in the batter.
The black cod was excellent, by far the best dish.
We had the domestic wagyu, which was nothing special, actually lacking seasoning, which you are invited to provide yourself with a variety of salts. I don't remember much about the dessert.
Gently mentioning our disappointments about the peppers and the lobster to the server during the meal got no reaction beyond a smile. We had quite a discussion amongst ourselves about the tip!
I think the food can be described as good, certainly novel in Scottsdale, but not outstanding so the meal is very poor value and I get the feeling that they think they are better than they are. If this restaurant were in New York, London, Paris, Madrid or anywhere in Japan, they would not survive.

This is a great Japanese restaurant with a contemporary twist. We ordered a lot of dishes and everything was fabulous. The otoro tuna was buttery and outrageously tasty. You can tell that all ingredients were fresh and presentation was impeccable. Everything tasted sublime and service was outstanding.I highly recommend this place.

There's a lot of spots for good food. Only a few for a great experience. This place has both. The omakase menu is a must. The service was beyond top notch and the variety of wonderful foods made this a truly great experience on every level. Great food, great staff, and great service. If you like to try new and interesting foods, you have to try this place.

We did a Google search for a good and authentic sushi place during our trip to Phoenix, Arizona. We didn’t know much about this restaurant, but we were truly pleasantly surprised. The decor is more in keeping with Arizona than Japan but that’s the least of the superlative aspect of this restaurant. Firstly, the service is second to none in this restaurant. Friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Then we were confronted with a (somewhat expensive) menu of a variety of western and eastern possibilities. The portions are large, so one does not need to order one of the bigger items - ordering, a few rolls is good if you have a moderate appetite and you do not have a behemoth bodily predicament. The food was absolutely excellent. It has fusion touches. If we lived in Phoenix, we would be coming every week to enjoy the food of this place. It is also a really nice touch by the architect to have designed the cooking area in the middle of the restaurant, visible to all. It made for an excellent experience.

Wow, what an incredible experience!! We can here looking for a higher end sushi restaurant, but did not expect the incredible service and experience which honestly was better than Nobu in Miami. Wesley and Justin made it absolutely fantastic. We had the Omakase menu where we let the chef choose our items, and it was true perfection. It made the last day of our vacation memorable especially during the COVID pandemic. We can’t recommend this place even more. You make us want to come back to Scottsdale as soon as we can!

The hosts and servers were all very knowledgable, quick & efficient. We all felt like royalty. And the food was FANTASTIC. I recommend the Japanese Wild Rice Hotpot, the brussels sprouts and the mushrooms, as well as the steak.
I'll be back!

This was our first visit at a friend's recommendation. The restaurant is different on the inside than it looks on the outside. The food and service was very good but somewhat on the expensive side. We arrived at 5:45 pm on a Saturday and the place was packed. The acoustics were not good for conversation with another couple, so we sat outside the main dining area where it was much more peaceful. The happy hour was reasonable but really didn't have too many choices if you like sushi. I don't think this would become my go to sushi place, but if you're with friends that really don't like sushi much, since there are many other choices on the menu, Roka Akor might be a good choice for dinner.

We had an excellent experience at the restaurant. We made a reservation and we’re seated right away, and the staff was very professional and friendly. We mainly had different types of sushi and maki rolls all which were perfectly prepared. The ambience was perfect and the presentation of all the place was exquisite. I would definitely come back again.

This is no Japanese restaurant. It is just a steakhouse in Japanese style. The only Japanese food they serve is small variations of Sushi/sashimi which is again not prepared as you would expect.
If you wanna try real Japanese food, go somewhere else. If you prefer to eat in stylish environment (interior design is nice indeed) with overpriced average food, go and visit.

Delicious authentic seafood dishes. Ordered for Classic Crispy Fish Tacos & Sautéed Wild Jumbo Scallops for whole family. They prepared the food within 20 minute. The chef was so professional for seafood dishes. He decorated both dishes so beautifully. Taste is 10/10 .. Had a great lunch here. Wanna come back again.

Outstanding flavors and presentation, this area seems quiet and I hesitated to go in sola, but I was greeted warmly and had the best seat in the house at the sushi counter, watching chefs/artists at work. I really enjoyed both hot and cold dishes; the butter fish tataki melted in my mouth, the eggplant was crispy and hot with a nice sauce on the side, and the nigiri were perfect slices of prime fish on rice, just the right size for a single bite. The beef dishes are specialties. I highly recommend this location if you are at the nearby hotels/resorts, it is convenient and easy to find.

This should be rated as a Michelin star restaurant. It was outstanding. We ordered items family style and everything from the crispy eggplant to the pork belly, the skirt steak and the broccolini…the cod….. everything g was par excellence! Highly recommend it!
