Consistent Favorite

It had been a while since I had visited this consistent favorite, but my visit last week was another testament to its excellence. The first treat is always the greeting by Giorgio, the superbly mannered and well-informed teenage son of the owners, who has already learned a lot about life and the notion of service. I want to be his uncle. With ingredients such as saffron and truffle on the menu, I am reminded that I am back in a place of refinement, quality and attention to detail. The open-air white décor, accompanied by the careful culinary descriptions offered by the owner, make me proud to have brought my friends to a place where you can’t help but to say “Ahhh …” Slightly off the beaten track in a residential neighborhood, I wish this place only continued success. They get it right!

Truffle pasta is a dish to remember

We read the reviews for Villa Italia and decided that we had to give it a try. The pasta was just as promised - fresh and delicious. We had the ravioli boulonnaisse for an appetizer, and our dishes were the salmon ravioli and truffle pasta. The mushroom truffle pasta was so yummy. We've been to the truffle festival in Italy, and this dish leaves that great truffle taste in your mouth! So good. It was a bit spendy for the area, more than the fresh fish restaurants that we had eaten at, but it was a nice change from our nightly fresh fish. We definitely recommend it!

Authentic and very tasty Italian

The food is exceptional. Love the homemade pasta, the 4 cheese gnocchi, the mushroom truffle pasta, all excellent. The service is average and they charge a lot for a little Parmesan on your pasta (shouldn’t this be included in the already steep price?) but I won’t hold either against them in the stars as the food, location, and vibe are all so positive.

YUCK-Don’t drink the bottled water it may have chewed bubble gum in it!

The food is good and almost as good as other Italian Restaurants in Playa Coco. The chefs know how to cook but the owner does not know customer service. We ordered a bottle of water and found the taste surprisingly to have a hint of water melon. To our disgust my nephew noticed chewed bubble gum at the bottom of the bottle. The owner was about as rude as he could be and blamed this on the supermarket that supplies the water. He ran away sending his young son to deal with the issue. We were hoping for a simple “sorry” instead we were verbally abused by the owner who said every Italian cuss word at the females in our party doing this after the males in the party had gone to our vehicle. We went back in to address the issue one more time just to say he was out of line hurling abuse on the women at which point he ran away again. He did rip the bill up and then cuss at my brother and all we wanted was an apology. I recommend skipping this place or bring your own water.

Aspettavamo questa recensione come gia avevato minacciato di farlo,pero chiaramente ho il diritto e il piacere di rispondere.Innanzi tutto le bottieglie dell acqua vengono aperte al tavolo davanti ai clienti che arrivano direttamente dall impresa nazionale Cristal,il ragazzo che e venuto al tavolo accompagnato da me proprietario parla 4 lingue mentre io non parlo inglese,nel momento in cui eravate seduti al tavolo nel ristorante c erano 60 persone e per rispetto chiarmente anche delle persone presenti,che comunque si sono resi conto dello show fatto,con minacce incluse di questa recensione e di avvisare tutti i commensali che alla fine vi hanno pure presi in giro per la bugia che avete inventato pur di non pagare i 180$ del conto.Non mi sono mai permesso di offendere nessuno,tantomeno delle donne Consiglio personale: LA PROSSIMA VOLTA SE NON AVETE I SOLDI PER MANGIARE MEGLIO STARSENE A CASA!! Ve ne siete accorti poi alla fine della cena e alla fine della bottiglia della gomma in fondo la bottiglia. Vergogna

Food ok, overall experience average

The exterior and interior of the restaurant are well kept, they did a good job to make you feel good. The service was ok, nothing to complain. Food was good, took Chicken lemon and friends the pasta bolognese. This is where the good stops. The bad is that the waiter/maître D, keeps shouting orders to the kitchen, after a while, quite annoying. They are there to make money, small portions, small pieces of bread, and they charge for the water (in a country that has one of the better tap water in the world). Big PLASTIC BOTTLE on the table. At the price we paid, this is a lack of etiquette that can be corrected easily. Italians never put the cheese on the pasta, letting the client decide if they want or not to change the taste of the pasta with the cheese. Last, you can’t split a bill: yes it was stated on the menu, I knew. Still tried because in my last 2 months in Costa Rica, this is a first. I have been around a lot and I took the time to write all this to be constructive and in hopes they will change a few things. If you want to charge higher price, you need to step up for an overall good experience.

Trip to Italy

I really enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The atmosphere, the table setting, the service and, oh my, the delicious food. I was able to choose gluten free pasta with whatever sauce I wanted from the menu. I chose the mushroom, zucchini, tomato sauce with plenty of Parmesan. It was a very good portion with tons of flavor. My husband had home made ravioli with a salmon and ricotta filling in a curry lobster cream sauce. Fantastic! All of my friends enjoyed their food also. The service by the owner was impeccable. What an enjoyable evening! I cannot wait to return to try more dishes.

Best Restaurant in town!

I visited the place twice for breakfast and It was so good that had to go back with the family for dinner. Breakfast is yummy! I had the pancakes one day and the scrambled eggs another time, both times food and service were impeccable! And the cappuccinos are yummy too! Fruits are fresh and everything is carefully prepared and presented. Esteban out waiter was very attentive and funny, good vibes! We went back for dinner, a group of 7 people and food came fast, warm and all at the same time WOW! Wine was also fine and so was the dessert. The service was impeccable, we felt well taken care of. Food was delicious, ingredients carefully curated and prepared, fresh, delicate, beautifully plated. I was only in town for 8 days and usually visit different places but this place was so good that I went back 3 times!!! The owner is also very attentive, he makes you feel at home and it shows he pours his heart into this place. The restaurant is beautiful, clean, and it has a very good energy. Overall a wonderful experience. Highly recommend! Food was so good I forgot to take pictures :)

Disappointed, won’t go back

I don’t usually write negative reviews. The restaurant business isn’t easy at the best of times, and the past 20 months haven’t been that. So I’m inclined to forgive when food or service isn’t up to expectations. But that wasn’t really the problem today. My own food wasn’t wonderful but it was fine, and the service was good until it came time to pay the bill. When our group of 5 asked for separate checks, the owner said the most he could do was to divide the total amount into a maximum of 5 equal parts and charge those amounts on individual cards. Not the way we would have wanted to do it, but we agreed. I then told the owner I wanted to pay for myself and one other member of the group (which should have cost me 40% of the total), and he said OK. However, when I gave him my card and he entered my charge into his credit card machine, the amount he entered was 50% of the total. I told him it wasn’t right. He replied that he had divided our total bill by 4, and I said no, divide by 5 and multiply that by 2. Without a word he picked up my card and the machine, went to the next table, keyed in the new amount, then came back and handed me the machine again, this time with the right amount on it, but still without a word. A simple “sorry” or “my mistake” would have done the trick. The mistake wasn’t the problem. It was how he handled it. A few of us felt he was annoyed that I told him the first amount was wrong. If the restaurant had been busy, the wrong amount he charged initially could have been the result of distraction by other customers, but there weren’t any. I’m not saying he was intentionally overcharging me, only that his abruptness and silence made us uncomfortable and soured what had otherwise been an enjoyable visit with friends. In my opinion, put simply, he was rude. To me, as a business owner myself, the first and most important rule of business should be to treat your customers well. I’m always looking for a good Italian restaurant, and given all the positive reviews I’ve seen for this one, I had high hopes. But I won’t be back and I can’t recommend it to anyone else.

I highly recommend you eat here if you love authentic Italian food

Wow!! This restaurant is absolutely amazing. Our group stumbled upon this beautiful restaurant accidentally and it turned out to be one of the best parts of our trip. It was so delicious that we decided to return here each of the last 4 days of our trip. My wife and I have already talked about returning to coco beach in the future just to visit this restaurant. Andrea, the owner was at the restaurant every time we visited and is always there to make sure the restaurant it running smoothly. He was able to make gluten free dishes which was great for one of the people in our group. I highly recommend you stop here for an authentic Italian cuisine that will absolutely blow you away.

Great dinner experience!

Our family always plans at least one meal at Villa Italia when we are in Costa Rica, and last night did not disappoint. As usual, the homemade pasta was delicious and perfectly prepared. We also loved the steak entree, caprese salad and calamari appetizers. Desserts also shine at Villa Italia. Truly, we have never been disappointed by any dish that we've ordered here. Don't be in a rush, you'll want to enjoy every moment!

Felt tourist like a tourist trap, but with decent food

Me and my family are Costa Rican, we have lived here all our lives and know for a fact that water all over the country is drinkable… but when I asked for tap water as my drink, the waiter awkwardly said they did not have tap water available, only $12 bottled water. This is the first restaurant in all of Costa Rica to do this and it really bothered me, as it was clearly a tourist trap move that I did not appreciate at all. Producing unnecessary plastic waste and desperately looking to charge more, made me decide within the first 5 min of being there that I wouldn’t come back Reg the food, we ordered a bruschetta caprese that was pretty irrelevant and a few plates of pasta that were all actually good, except for the carbonara which lacked a little flavor. Recommend the mushroom and truffle pasta, very creamy and great earthy flavors

A taste of Italy

I absolutely recommend this restaurant. Number one, the food is PHENOMENAL! I would usually post pics of the food, but it was so good we ate every bite before I even had the chance. Number two, Andrea and Georgio are awesome. As a family from Italy, you can tell they take pride in their food and their service. Having been to Italy, it’s hard to find restaurants that compare, but Villa Italia is as authentic as they come. Do yourself a favor and make sure to drive out of your way to try this place! We drove an hour from Tamarindo and were not disappointed.

Worst ripoff in years,,, maybe ever.

As an avid traveler I can safely say that this was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in getting totally ripped off in a restaurant. We ordered a "special" for two, water to drink, no booze, and no dessert. The food was just awful. I suggest you go to Italy and get some experience. It was just unbelievable. Then the waitress brings out a check for twice as much money as the price on the menu. Go figure? When questioned about it, her ability to speak the English language completely disappeared. We paid double for a horrible meal. Avoid this place.

The food here is outstanding! We have traveled the world, including many trips to Italy and I can truthfully say that Villa Italia is as good as it gets. The appetizers are delicious, especially the bruschetta and the sautéed tomatoes, the martinis are perfect, all of the pasta dishes are fabulous, the coffee-rubbed steak is to die for. If you don't come here while in Guanacaste, you are missing out on a fabulous dining experience. Without a doubt, our favorite restaurant in the area, and there are some great ones!

Not a great experience! Overpriced.

Special of baked mahai mahai was way overpriced for such a small portion. The fish and sauce lacked flavor and was a forgettable dish. The other guests found their food was only soso. Service was excellent, it’s a nice it’s the chef let the side down. I would not give back.
