To try Shanghai cuisine we went to this little place, without booking, they immediately found the place. The service is fast and friendly (despite language difficulties). There are typical Shanghai dishes (even some vegetarian options), but mainly with fish. Very good and prices in line with the rest of China, considering being in Shanghai. Would definitely stay again

Great recipe and first time trying the noodles. It's super good! Not so sure if these are local delights for Shanghainese but it's definitely worth a try!

It’s a no-frill, family restaurant. The food was really good and reasonably priced. Staff was friendly and gave good recommendations. We will definitely go back again the next time when we are in Shanghai.

Really enjoyed everything we had here - from pork with chestnuts to rice cakes, scallion noodles (not the best in Shanghai but damn good!), water spinach and pork and loads of other great things. Worth a visit.

We ordered most of the signature dishes. The braised pork belly was excellent. As for the crispy duck leg, it was nice but only average. The other dishes (stir fried beef, broccoli, fried rice) were all good. Having tried a few establishments for Shanghai cuisine in my previous trip, I would say this restaurant is the best so far. Service was brisk, though I was slightly annoyed their habit of not placing dishes at the centre of the table (as most restaurants do) when serving them. But then, this could just be part of the whole experience that comes with tradition.

A bit out of the bitten track but still in the gorgeous French concession, this restaurant was a nice surprise. Ordered a few dishes with the help of online food blogs and the menus in English with photos. Food was tasty and not too heavy or greasy. Service was standard Chinese, and not entirely welcoming, but the food makes up for it. Definitely recommended.

I'm not a fan of Chinese cuisine because it's too sugary and oily for my taste, but since I'm here for a week for work I want to eat traditional food. I went to this cosy tiny restaurant quite early so I managed to get in without queues and stress. The food was nice (I had the braised red pork, the ginger eggplant and the battered chicken), but I was expecting something I wanted to go back for again and again. But no, I don't have that feeling in me. But, as I said, maybe it's me; I am not a fan of Chinese food. They don't speak English, which was nice and felt authentic, but they are switched on and the menu has an English translation of the food, which I find thoughtful and kind.

This is authentic and delicious food of Shanghai. I loved the eggplant, noodles, and stuffed dates. I could do without the fermented tofu, but when in Rome, right?! Come here for the food, not the service.

The food comes out fast. They serve locals here, people taking a break from work to have lunch or out for a quick dinner at night. The first night we ate here we had deep-fried bean curd skin with peanut sauce, baby yellow croaker spring rolls, noodles in scallion, oil, and soy sauce, eggplants in casserole, a spinach dish, and deep-fried duck leg, Shanghai style. All very good. I think we walked out of there paying $10 a person. The only disappointment was we didn’t get to try the noodles in peanut sauce because that’s on the workers’ menu, only available during the day. So we went back to Jian Guo 328. Twice. Third visit our server got our order wrong and brought out a bowl of glutinous rice balls in fermented rice wine. Reminiscent of Indiana Jones. I would have not thought of ordering that. Three of us at the table shrugged and gave it a try. Delicious. We’ll be in Shanghai four more days. The restaurant is close to where we’re staying. I can see us going back again.

Great Shanghainese food in a small cozy place. Menu in English and Chinese, staff purely Chinese speaking. The place do get busy so reserve a table in advance. Be punctual or the table will be canceled. Now we did have a reservation and had to wait about 10-15 minutes before being seated. We ended up sharing a table with another group which was fun bet yet awkward. Shanghainese food is not one of my favorites, it is rather subtle tasting, a bit sweet and a bit oily (although at this place they go easy on the oil). This place stands out as one of the better ones for this type of cuisine. My favorite was clearly the fish spring roll and the crab tofu. The braised pork belly was not bad and the deep fried duck legs was scrumptious. If you have had your fair share of Hunan and Sichuan food and want something that won’t set your tastebuds on fire, this place is for you. Not to forget that this is primarily a place where locals go.

The restaurant is cosy and super casual. However their food reminds me of childhood homemade Shanghai cuisine. Their noodles with spring onions and oil, together with their dates stuffed with glutinous rice, are probably one the best I have tasted. I make a point to visit every time I go to Shanghai.

After reading recommendations in several of our travel guides for China we decided to have dinner here in our last night in Shanghai. We were told we had to wait 30 mins before we could sit down at a table and we decided to wait. It turned out to be over an hour as the man on the door let other Chinese locals in first. They were able to make reservations after arriving after us at the restaurant by making a phone call after being turned away because it was too busy, pushing us further down the list. 10 mins before we actually were able to sit down we were told we could order our food first so it would be ready for when we get to our table. Even though we ordered up front we were served after people who sat down after us. They didn't even bring the drinks we ordered until after the first dish arrived 20 mins after we sat down. The restaurant was very busy but we couldn't believe how terrible the service was. We were still holding onto the fact that the food was said to be amazing but that too was disappointing. We travelled to several cities on our own and with Chinese friends and had sampled some amazing food on our travels and this was by far the worst food we had eaten all trip. It was bland and many of the hot dishes we ordered arrived luke warm. Although the food was reasonably priced compared to other restaurants we ate in during our stay in Shanghai it wasn't really worth the money compared to some of the real local restaurants we ate in which were packed full of flavour in other parts of China for a fraction of the price.

Food was nice but not amazing. Service was terrible. We turned up and the restaurant was full. We asked to put our name down on the list and where told it would take 30 minutes. We stayed waiting by the door. Our name was not written down. Other Chinese people without reservation arrived after us and where seated before us. We waited for nearly an hour and then where provided by "ok" but not amazing food. This was our last meal in Shanghai and it was totally not worth the wait and the effort of going there. Plenty of other nice places that aren't full of hipsters trying to chat up the waiters so they can have seats before the foreigners. ugh!

I had been to this restaurant many times before, but still I come for my first dinner when I am in Shanghai. The reason is the food is not too big and the taste is so good. So, I can order more dishes to fulfill my wish. Most of the customers here are the same feeling after I talked to them, so I think you should try this out and you will know what I mean. Enjoy it !
