Originally from Madurai in South India, Murugan Idli Shop (Murugan Idli Kadai) has opened many branches in Chennai (T Nagar, Paris Corner and Besant Nagar). As the name suggests Idli (Rice Cakes) are their speciality, with a variety of chutneys and most importantly, Podi and Gingelly oil. T Nagar Branch includes Sakkarai Pongal in Breakfast time. Generally, good for breakfast and dinner. Strictly, vegetarian. Also Madurai Special Jigarthanda is also available.

You get the best in town variety of pure vegetarian south Indian food here. Try the hot idlis, pongal, rava dosas. One may not like the North Indian food here but South Indian cuisine is yummy. No trip to Chennai is complete without a visit to Murugan Idli Shop. Must visit with family and friends.

How does one not review the ubiquitous Murugan Idli, especially when the world over Idli has come to be revered as the most healthy snack or breakfast. I first had a taste of those mind-blowing idlis back in Madurai, where teh Murugan Idli franchise seems to have originated. Those fluffy, melt in the mouth idlis laced with orange milagai poid(gun powder for those who are uninitiated in Tamil) are a real treat. Gobble up 12 of them and you will still find yourself asking for more. Top it up with a cold glass of Jigarthanda(though i find the Madurai Variety a lot better) or if you have consumed less idlis, may be you can make do with a dollop or two of sarkarai pongal(sweet rice dish made of rice, jaggery and ghee). Yummy, you realise how important it is to be born as an Indian and more specifically a south Indian. I would give my arm and a leg and a free visa to Italy for the one and only Murugan Idli. Try it

Puruswalkam branch of Murugan Idli Shop has been closed for almost 2+ years now. Please remove this listing. Even while it was there, the place was cramped up and no proper air circulation. very hot and humid. They have now shifted to Kilpauk.

This outlet has been shifted few months back to Kellys, although I couldn't spot the new outlet. However, there is 1 near Ormes Road. They are famous for hot and soft idly and sweet pongal and even onion utthapam. They have many branches in chennai. I like their Onion Ghee Utthapam best.

Purasaiwakam is heart of the city and this Idli shop is another great addition to many other famous eateries in this place. Place is crowded all time.. breakfast is fantastic. Car Parking could be a issue as the place is busy thoroughfare. Price is little premium when you look around and there are many good hotels in this area.. but Murugan idli has its own branding and therefore, one can indulge in breakfast here.

Having made a name for themselves, Murugan Idli Shop charges for the air conditioning even when it is switched off ! I went to try their breakfast after having their meal, one morning. I was their only customer even though the restaurant opens at 7 AM. I asked the fat boy to switch on the a/c and he did but only the one on top of him so no difference in my wellbeing. Food is not so great as I have had much better at Saravanan Bhavan.

softest idlies. Murugan has matured from being just from Madurai. All the items including trademark jigarthanda are excellent.

I've been here many times, usually on Sunday mornings. This place is a must visit for those wanting to taste south Indian tiffin in its simplest form. The idlis are soft and tender, and should be had with tomato chutney. The podi idlis are a class apart. I also have the onion uttapam every time and it never fails to delight. It's hard to find idlis so soft anywhere else in Chennai On the downside, this place is not fancy and can get crowded and noisy sometimes. Don't expect world class service. It's quick though.

I have the podi dosai every time with all the variety of chutney they have. The brinjal chutney is very different and tasty. The meals however is very mediocre. The variety rice is yummy but quantity is very less.

I don't care about the ambiance, but this people have shaped idli in to different level. Trust me , I was never a fan of Idli until i reached here. The best of it is Podi Idli which has some powder and oil... also have this with Chutneys not with the usual Sambar. Enjoy Dining.

I hop into a Murugan Idli Shop every chance I get while in Chennai. This place offers authentic South Indian fare at affordable prices. The food is fresh, messy and yummy. Don't forget to finish off your meal with a filter coffee. And yes, you gotta get your hands dirty here!

This is the best place to have idly or dosa, period. We ordered for idlies first followed by Masala dosa. Both were supremely tasty. Service was super quick. Affordable meals.
