the britishs raj buffeted many a king and prince from their comfort zone..glory days passed them by and dowdy days befell them...but pride never left them................... in the restauarnt world at chennai...DUCHESS suffers from this same identity crisis...should i be a proud continental...or a reticent Chinese.....and do i have a house to call my own.....from location to location this Duchess has been shifted and shoved and it just doesnt want to give up.... so we headed to Duchess with much trepidation....Wednesday evening and we arrived at the Karaikudi complex...with it being a self declared food fort with all different cuisines going around its indeed a great place for choice............chettinad,north west, hyderabadi, sea food, chinese, continental, kulfi bar.......boy a true CARDIOLOGISTS delight........ a splattering of cars awaited us which sent me an unseen message that the whole complex was running low..and to see waiters and valets lounging outside made my heart skip a beat of a decision gone wrong.....still we steeled ourselves and started the great climb...... well those steps were an ORTHOPEDICS delight as if one has to do that thrice a week then he will be knee weak for sure....pray how does it work when one has to climb so many stairs... but if the food is good then this staircase will turn to an express lift if not it will remain a precipice climb with a length of twine....i was waiting for this verdict... so instead of the wheatish mexican ramirez, sancho, panchez, raul and rasq in their stetsons to greet us we had the pucca tamilian armugham, arunachalam, amarendran and annamalai in checked shirts and sombreros greeting us....and the ubiqutous north eastern cowboys who dot every restaurant of all denominations across the country.... and did we walk in to a ..................bone empty restaurant. my heart sank as i found the chefs scurrying into the kitchen to get their act together tearing away from the match where india were being made into mince meat by the white saab'S.since the first customers trooped in at 9 pm........... so we settled into a comfortable four seater and were met by the most courteous steward in a long time..he went at great pains to talk about the new fare and even though we were old faithfuls to this particular restaurant his approach was indeed fresh.. was patient while we ordered a mix match of steaks sizzlers and plated dishes.... the complimentary soup was a hot and sour chicken and boy was it good going towards great.... then the main course arrived and it was just AWESOME.....four different meats and all four found it to be top class.....the sirloin, fish, boozy chicken and lamb leg was par excellence.... its then i realized an empty restaurant can work both ways.....either you can leisurely cook the best meal or you can haphazardly and disinterestedly go through the motions....we were fortunate with the former and the chef gave us a meal we wont forget in a long time..... its unfortunate that this place is badly patronized as even the pricing for this class of restaurant is within limits....places of lesser quality have found better patronage..... and btw after the meal walking out when i stepped out into the stair head it felt like i was on an escalator...the trip was smooth.. what a lot of good ,good food can do..it can move one from crib to crave.... which makes me come back to the point.......a restaurant must become a landmark with location and food....if u juggle it around it loses its moorings and will lead to an untimely death...but as a foodie i wont want this DUCHESS to die if it continues to churn this quality.......

We were going to this place after a couple of years. It has shifted once again to the Karaikudi complex further down from its old location on Cathedral Road. Their reasonable priced buffet was obviously popular, but we decided to go a-la-carte. I found that the Manchow soup was good, but was spicier than the waiter led us to believe. The go to man, Srinivasan I think his name was) was nice enough to replace it with a very good chicken and spinach soup. The baked crab (a rather large crab!), served with brushetta and french fries. was very nice though a bit heavy on the cheese. That was what we enjoyed. The ambiance is OK, nothing special. One irritant (no fault of the restaurant) was a very loud family group. The staff's attempt to drown them out with the music failed ! Worth an occasional visit.

Visited Duchess after a long time maybe after a decade or so. The restaurant has relocated to a new location in the Karaikuddi complex near Neelgiri store. We were greeted by ever friendly staff with big smiles on their faces. We were early for dinner and hence had a choice of where to sit, after trying out 2 different tables we settled for third one. dinner/ bread roles and tortilla chips precede the main course. Steaks are still the main speciality of this place and we ordered sizzling chicken steaks with pepper sauce. Steaks were made really well and with abundant Sauce as well as big portion of fries. An amazing meal after a long time in very nice and friendly setup served by efficient staff which made lasting impression. I am surely to be visiting it during my next trip to the city.

Just the usual thing. Same usual menu, food is good but nothing stands out. It is convenient to go to since it is in the middle of the city.

The best thing about this restaurant is its location. Finding it won't be an issues since its right on the main R K Salai. We savoured the Sweet corn soup which was piping hot and done with good consistency. However, the food was just about ok.... the fried rice and assorted veg. It didn't provide us with enough motivation to try something from the dessert menu. With couple of good options within the same complex and surrounding area, I am not very likely to visit this again.

My husband recollected yesteryear memories of Duchess, where guests would be led into a Traditional Setting, by a friendly staff and were given cold towels to refresh themselves. Apparently the older branch was closed, to be shifted to the current venue. Decor wise its Simple - towards contemporary, but nothing to write home about. Food - Ultimately, you just cant go wrong with time tested formulas that have resulted in mouth watering dishes. We were craving steaks - and chose the Chefs recommendation 8 ounce beef steak and then my eyes fell on the description of the "Carpetbag steak" - a fillet of beef stuffed with shrimps *oooh dare i?* They got back to us in 25 mins with our dinner - and it was wonderful. My husband finished his in minutes and looked towards mine :)Portions were just right for one person without stuffing oneself, however I had tried out their apple&celery mocktail which was surprisingly yum, but fyi it fills you up fast - so the rest of my steak was wiped clean with the help of my husband. Theres something about the sauce they put which is OMG - Divine! The Onions and cabbage were lovely to the bite but soaked just enough in that delicious sauce - made me clean up the veges on my plate. The only negative would be the frozen shrimps *sigh...was sooo close to perfection*. We ended with caramel custard which was good, albeit the bubbly texture. Staff - Courteous,Attentive and Warm. Much to the amusement of the Head of Staff i actually asked him about the origins of why my steak was called a 'carpetbag' - to which 6 brownie points for effort but 0 for lack of the correct answer or a creative one to a person who would have accepted even a funny version. Would we go there again ? Without a Doubt! :)

Visited the restaurant for lunch with two friends .. all three of us ordered variations of sizzlers. We had been told that this restaurant serves good sizzlers and that was the prime reason for the visit The sizzlers were just about competent .. nothing great about them, but nothing adverse either. The portion sizes, especially of the meat, certainly are quite less generous in comparison to other sizzler places. The sauce and the veggies were also primarily of middling quality In all, nothing to merit a second visit unless it is driven by the extreme convenience of the location and the definitely friendly service

I understand that Duchess belongs to the chain that also owns Palki, Snofield, Karaikudi, Amaravati etc., Most of these restaurants can be found on that one stretch of Cathedral Road, which already has excellent eateries to its name. Duchess is on the first floor. Kabul, another restaurant owned by the same group sits on the opposite side. Visibly, both the restaurants have a totally different ambiance. Duchess is designed in a Western style. Welcoming you in are couple of mannequins dressed in the old rugged Western outfits - of course, displaying their revolvers. Inside a portion of the wall is decorated with weapons. The waiters are draped in western outfits and even wear a hat in an attempt to make the setting authentic. But for my taste, it is utter useless. All things used are cheap and it is evident. It does not add anything to the ambiance, rather takes away a lot. A small light is lit inside a glass container once you make yourself comfortable. I don't think it goes well with the Western theme. The waiters visit you promptly to take your order, but the service time is excruciatingly lengthy. As a compliment you get a basket of bread - which is good. The bread, especially the one infused with garlic is a hit. However, at times you'd have to wait a long time even for this basket to come to you. I've tasted a good number of Steaks here. The Oscar steak is the only one I could write anything good about. It is awesome - but walk in on a day when the restaurant is busy, you will have the worst of it served. While the taste is good, the preparation is abhorring. Crab shells are left in the dish; there is no consistency in presentation (one time I got an Orange slice with the dish, the combination of which was excellent and the next time I did not get one). Very often I found that the Chicken is being over cooked making it chewy. The Saffron chicken steak is supposed to be the highlight, but it is the worst I had tasted. The lamb steak was good. This restaurant is for steaks evidently - the Chinese here is torturous. The fried rice available on the street joints is perhaps better in flavor. In the end, you will be left with a hole in your pocket and dissatisfaction in your heart. There are better restaurants here in Chennai - you can clearly give this a miss.

Duchess has moved from TTK (Mowbrays) Road , where we last had a meal a few years ago, to Cathedral Road where it shares premises with sister restaurant Kabul and a bakery (i forget the name). Contrary to some of the reviews here, we had a pleasant experience. The Duchess pepper steak was really good while the Fish Bedford was just OK. The Chicken a la Kiev, which the staff were nice enough to get me though it was not on the menu, was pretty good though it did not measure up to the Steak. One negative was the rubber band that my little nephew found half way through his ice cream . I must say the staff were more upset than we were and they promptly offered him another dessert of his choice. Most steaks are priced between Rs 300 and 350 while the vegetarian options come in at about Rs 100 less. The service was very good

It is on the same floor next to the KABUL RESTAURANT. The restaurants are on the 1st Floor and can be approached by Lift too. Vallet parking is available for these restaurants. The food is excellent. You can try their chilly beef and their Shell less Crab... You will just freak on it. They serve Continental, Chinese and also indian food if needed since the two restaurants share the same kitchen. Truely value for money. The Duchess was earlier located on TTK road has now been shifted to 1/200, Dr.Radhakrishnan Salai,, Mylapore, http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=15343997704825170511&q=kabul+restaurant,+chennai&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=13.049285,80.258764&spn=0.00001,0.000011&t=m&z=17&vpsrc=6

As someone who grew up to the wonderful steaks and continental food at Duchess restaurant, TTK road, a recent visit to the Duchess outlet at Anna Nagar with friend and family was a shocking and sad let-down. The sizzlers plates looked half empty and a pale shadow of what they used to look 10 years ago, with sad looking veggies. The french fires looked like they were cooked on heavily re-used oil. We ordered Potato wedges with Paprika. We got Potato wedges oozing in Oil with malnourished sprinkling of paprika. One of us, who was a seafood fan, ordered The "Darn of Seer" which, the menu described as "Seer Fish Fillet in Barbecue sauce". The fish was less grilled and more oozing oil. The sauce was completely sweet. Whatever happened to the smoky flavor? To top it all, we spoke to the restaurant manager and the chef, who very kindly clarified to us that "barbecue sauce is meant to be sweet and is mixed with Indian spice". The meat steaks were better than the fish, but I shudder to think what would have happened if we had ordered the once signature "Mixed Grill London House" Overall, sad experience and poor value for the money we paid (the evening was not cheap by any standards for a stand alone restaurant).

Mylapore
The religious and cultural epicenter of Chennai, Mylapore is highly revered by the locals and tourists for the rich history and architectural marvels that line its narrow alleys and markets and is one of the oldest residential neighbourhood of the city. Home to a cluster of tree-lined avenues full of popular churches and the renowned Kapaleeswara Temple soaked in Dravidian architectural vibes, Mylapore is filled with small lanes with old-style homes, music auditoriums and stores selling music and religious memorabilia. The bazaars selling jewellery, fresh produce and flowers that surround the streets of this neighbourhood provide a colourful backdrop to the temple. Aimless strolls through the small lanes lead you to hidden corners of some mouth-watering south-Indian dishes served at local places like Maami’s mess, Jannal Kadai and Kaalathi Stall.
