Just to cut to the chase, the brisket was fantastic and the collards were good. My complaint about the collards and other "sides" on the menu was the price, and, in my specific case, portion size. The "family" portion of collards for $9 yielded just...2 nice servings. In my book, any menu portion labeled "family" size, ought to at least yield 4 servings. I'd certainly buy more BBQ meat here, but will pass on the sides during any future visits.More
In D.C. and a friend took a group of us out for lunch at Hammerdown. Man!!!! That Brisket was fall off the fork tender and juicy. Ambience is rustic and typical BBQ joint. Wasn't a big fan of the Potato Salad, but everything else was...really good. Definitely a must doMore
Being kind of picky in that the brisket is what is always ordered, we were so surprised that this small and unassuming place finally hit the brisket perfectly! Nice long tender moist strips with a nice edge of seared fat and a dark peppery rub...were soft and almost fell apart when they were picked up. A real ten out of ten. The sides were also perfectly done. The collard greens were tasty without being overly spicy. They were nicely streamed in a flavored broth but had not gotten soakingly soggy. Green beans were soft but still had the exact amount of bite to them. This is a very unassuming place and not one you would go to for chic atmosphere. It has its own little rustic look, it is not large but the trip out here is worth every mile and every drop of gas.More
Off the beaten path, but worth it. The brisket is really really good, even at $23/lb. Mac n cheese also good.
Hammerdown is rated one of the top 10 BBQ joints in Northern VA/DC/Maryland by the Washington Post and its ranking is well deserved. Fantastic brisket and pulled pork. The homemade sauce is also great. You can order meat by the pound and the also have...plates and sandwiches. I thought the sides were fine but not at the same excellent level as the meat. Off the beaten path but well worth the drive.More
The tasty barbecue place is located on Rt. 50 between Chantilly and Middleburg in a country shop setting. I remember there used to be a red telephone box there straight out of Dr. Who. Their food is good and satisfies the taste bud. We tried...both beef and chicken barbecue. They maintain hygiene rigorously, changing gloves between orders. Price is reasonable considering the portion. They have patio seating as well, look forward to enjoy there once the pandemic is over.More
Enjoyed the brisket and chicken for lunch along with baked beans and collard greens. First time trying the brisket and was very good.
atmosphere is rustic and great. indoor and outdoor seating options. there is a bar with a limited but good selection of beers. i love the brisket - juicy and tasty. probably the best in the area. the bbq sauces are ok. could use one with...a little more heat IMO. pulled pork above average. to be honest, the only other bbq option close by is the outdoor market at the intersection of 50 and 15. you would have to drive to gainesville or chantilly to find another sit-down bbq option. that being said, hammerdown is definitely a must-try and maybe even the go-to place for bbq in NoVa.More
Found this place out riding with a group of 7. We were the first in the restaurant at 11:30am. The staff immediately greeted us and exchanged conversation. The place is newer, but has a rustic feel. Pretty ample seating inside with a lot of picnic...tables outside. The BBQ was great. I had a brisket sandwich with a side of coleslaw. The sandwich was excellent. The roll was fresh, the brisket was tender with good flavor on it's own. They piled the meat on high. They offer two different sauces, original and spicy squirrel. They are both KC style, which I prefer over NC style. They both were very tasty, but the spicy squirrel was my favorite. Good flavor with some bite, but not annoying. The coleslaw was good too. Evryone in the group agreed that it was good BBQ. (And we stop a lot for BBQ while riding) It seems to have a following, because when we left it was filling up. It was unseasonable warm for December, so that may have gotten people out. I assume it gets pretty crowded in the warmer months, and for good reason. I would recommend this place for some good BBQ. Overall it was pleasant eperience.More
Really great barbecue and sides! Staff is helpful and friendly! Everything I ate was absolutely yummy!
We tried several items from the menu and from the pulled pork to the brisket to the pulled chicken it would be difficult to pick our favorite . All three were outstanding . The flavor and the moisture beat any barbecue in the DMV and...believe me we have tried all the top rated from Baltimore to Norfolk. What does beat the brisket , chicken and pork are the outstanding Ribs. They are smoked to perfection with just a hint of smoke rather than that overwhelming smoke flavor that makes them taste like they were just rescued from a three alarm fire. If you like barbecue do not miss Hammer Down when going down Route 50 and passing Route 600 aka Trailhead . On the right if going East and on the left if going West.More
Hands down, this is the real deal. Authentic Que! First, they are smoking the meats right outside on the carport area. You can talk to the pit crew before or after eating. and the eating is good. the pork was good, the brisket was perfect...and the chicken (a meat i usually don't enjoy smoked) are all on the list to order again. the inside is appointed perfectly - roll up garage door to outside seating, everything inside feels unique and classy. it's a haul out there from DC, but worth the drive. there is plenty of free parking - my advice is to get there early. and, they sell 'until it's gone' on a daily basis - while visiting with the pit crew after eating i was told they run out of ribs (and most everything else) every day.More
Wow I am impressed you want a great BBQ place in Va I found it no frills good grub nice ride to Aldine get er done
My son and I love barbeque...we've tried almost everyone in the MDV area within and close to the beltway. We heard about this place from other Q lovers and had to try it. Let me tell you if you love Q, this is the last...stop...everything we had exceeded our expectations...tender, meaty, flavorful. The ribs weren't skinny on meat...it was just out of this world. It takes us almost an hour to get out here, but hell, it's worth it.More
