Here's my take:
Strengths - it has a long and colourful history and it banks on that for sale-ability. Although the manner by which they prepare their coffee is not necessarily unique, they've captured the palate of most coffee lovers with taste that never grew old and has never changed through the years. They maintain the consistency of the quality of their coffee.
Weaknesses - I wouldn't necessarily call it a weakness but if there is one that you can tag to this cafe, it's the location. It's not in a site where you'd normally have a peaceful breakfast over coffee at least not an experience a city dweller might be looking for. Madge was, as I would think, put up to cater to business owners who have stalls inside the market for them to have their breakfast to kick-start their day. So if you're a normal city dweller who's used to Starbucks, SB or CBTL, this might not be your spot for coffee as you would probably mind having coffee with wet market people.
Opportunities - There is a lot of opportunities to expand, especially with their rich history and their unique flavourful coffee. Owners of Madge probably thought they were only good for wet market people but are now surprised getting noticed by outsiders. The opportunities are boundless, however, it all depends on the owner's comfort zone. The way I see it, for the longest time that they have been known to just word of mouth, they're already happy where they are. Opportunity to compete with mainstream coffee shops? Definitely! In fact, Madge may even give the mainstream ones a run for their money.
Threat - I cannot identify one that actually competes in their level and their market. I wouldn't even say Starbucks, SB, CBTL and all the other mainstream coffee shops are a threat because they cater to a different market. Somehow though, Madge has clawed into the same market these mainstream coffee shops are catering to who wouldn't mind the chaos of a wet market just to get a taste of the best coffee in town. There are the usual batchoy eateries that abound the place and they also offer brewed coffee. However, nothing competes with the Madge brand.
