Got the chance to go up the fabled Pine City to experience the nippy and cold February weather (11-12 °C at night) and my millennial daughter convinced us to have dinner here. Since the family loves Japanese cuisine, we did not hesitate. Chaya exudes that "feel at home" ambiance as it was obviously a former house, now repurposed as a resto. After gobbling up the free appetizers, we tried their Chirashi Sushi and Temaki Sushi (roll your own sushi) plus traditional Japanese faves, Ebi Tempura and Sukiyaki. To keep us warm was free flowing Japanese house tea!! Service was prompt, friendly, and attentive despite being a full house at that time. Taste was excellent with good value. Will definitely return to try their other offerings.

The restaurant is in an old and classy building with a nice outdoor area and a well designed cozy inside. We enjoyed the authentic Japanese food and I was also able to meet the owner who was very friendly and also answered my questions about some of the plants in the outdoor area. We really enjoyed our stay, the fresh food and the delicious fruit shakes. When we are back in Baguio we will definitely come again.

I live just a block from Chaya so it’s my go-to restaurant whenever I’m too lazy to turn on the oven or defrost whatever’s in my fridge. Today, it was late lunch at 3:00pm. The place was empty. While waiting for our order, they served the usual tuna hors d’oevre but I was delighted to have been served a new one — pickled okra. The combination of the tuna and okra really got my taste buds running. Our mains katsu curry, yakiniku, gyoza, and salmon sashimi were the usual; they were perfect. The miso soup today was odd though, it had fish and didn’t have tofu. Still tasted good but it kind of reminded me of sinigang na bangus rather than miso soup. Anyway, the sashimi was orgasmically good and the slices didn’t have those white marbling (if I’m not mistaken, farmed salmon has prominent marbling). Tummies full, we asked for the cheque, and while waiting for our bill, they served their green tea ice cream. It didn’t have mung beans on top but it was still a treat. Arigatou, Sonoko san.

Food is exquisite delicious to die for and authentic sashimi, sushi, tempura, sukiyaki, salmon calpacio is to die for, chaya salad must try excellent original light dressing. Price might medium to high but worth every penny for connusiuers. They fresh baguio vegetable, honey, miso etc at competitive priced for convenienve of guest. Bucket list of a lifetime checked done must definitely come back for more

The place opens at 6pm to 8pm in the evening. We were pleasantly surprised that it’s a homey place. They have indoors and Alfresco dinning area. Parking is limited so best to be early. Best to make reservations too. We tried some of the usual Japanese dishes like gyoza, salmon sashimi, mixed tempura and teriyaki chicken. The highlight of our dinner was the temaki which requires you to make-your-own maki. Seaweeds are provided with Japanese rice. A plate of various sashimi, crabstick, tamago, cucumber, etc is the star of the dish. We had fun assembling our maki and eating them. For dessert, try the macha ice cream with red beans. It was simply the right match and the perfect ending to our dinner. Lastly, I had a chance of meeting the owner of the place who was entertaining a group of guest at the table beside ours. Her name is Sonoko Taguchi. I took a selfie and included here so you guys can recognize her when you visit Chaya. People may be surprised that we went to Baguio to eat Japanese food?! Why Not if it’s Chaya

On our drive from Baguio to Bataan my wife wanted to stop at this Japanese Restaurant she found online. The reviews were great and it didnt disappoint. Service also was spot on. It was very quiet and we were the only diners at lunch. We had dishes such as Ramen, Tempura, Salmon, and Yakatori. We were provided with some complimentary sides and after we finished our meal we had a complimentary matcha ice-cream. Overall an excellent experience.

Great family home, mom & pop personal restaurant. Fair prices and food quantity, good flavor. Service is attentive though a bit slow if you are a bigger group. But food we’ll worth the wait. Place is clean.

Terrible food and service Re: Reservations On Sept 22, I made a reservation with Jovie and then reconfirmed with Arian for 17 pax, 730 PM, on Sept 23, Saturday. I asked Arian if there was a private room and she said there was but only for 12-15 pax. So she and I said we cannot be in there. And I said I really prefer the main dining room. So she confirmed my reservation at that point. 7 of us arrived early and they said they were directed to the private room. When I arrived at 730pm, some had already ordered food. It was cramped of course, very stuffy, poor ventillation and there was no waiter in sight so we had to go out several times to call a waiter. I then went out and asked why we were put in the private room when Arian had confirmed my reservation for 17 pax at the main dining room. So noone could answer me. I asked for the manager and Prime came. First, Prime said that I was not assured by Arian about the main dining room. I called Arian and asked her and she said that yes she confirmed it. Prime said that there were others who reserved ahead of me. So I said you should have said sorry we can't give you a table in the main dining! But did not. And then I asked who moved us to the private room and they were pointing fingers at each other. Prime then tried to reason wrongly by saying "did someone not call me to tell me that I will be moved to the private room?" I said no! So, at that point I saw a table for 10 being given to someone else and another table for 8 that jst got vacated- I said those are for me. So, we moved to the main dining WITHOUT Prime offering us to do so. No apology at that point and no solution but lots of bad excuses. Since noone was admitting mistake I asked Prime for the last time, before we left, who moved us to the pvt room so I can tell my story to you correctly. He finally owned up to it. Re: Food I returned my wagyu- it was tough and tasteless. The tempura shrimps were soggy and lacked taste. Chawan mushi was tasteless. Chahan lacked taste too. The pork katsu was good and the unagi. Re: Service We waited so long for the orders to come. I asked on the phone if I could bring a birthday cake and they said yes. We gave them the Vizco's strawberry shortcake to put in the ref while dining. They must not have because when it was brought out it was not cold and had partially caved in. The saucers and forks took so long in coming that my sister almost went into the kitchen to get it. Our table for 8 was given a small dollop of ice cream but not the table for 10 (despite us reminding and them saying it's coming. Never came). I was also told I could not call you and had to email you instead. That's just terrible. Perhaps Prime thought having to write this lengthy email would deter me from reaching you. It is quite a chore which I hope you will appreciate. Re: Billing Back at the hotel, at almost 11pm I got a call from your staff asking to talk to Simon ( my nephew). He was told his debit payment didn't go through. But Simon told the caller that he already got a notice that payment of p2k plus has been debited. And the caller then said oh ok sir. Mr Sonoko Taguchi, my husband and I were there in June, barely 3 months before. We were happy with the food and service that's why we took our big family there. 2 of them also dined like 2 yrs ago and 1 longer than that and both had pleasant experiences. Did you change your chef and your supervisor? That night was an absolute nightmare! What happened? So after recommending Chaya to my family and friends last June, I am now retelling this horror story instead. S. Ong

The Good - food servers are attentive. That is it. The Bad - Our food was served one at a time and it took so long for them to serve the food. The last dish (mixed tempura) was served and we are already having dessert. Matcha icecream was served and we were already preparing to leave. - Worst Tempura i had. And this was served last (took them more than an hour serve this) it was tough and gristly (makunat) - Japanese hotpot was bland. Even if it comes with its sauce, it was still bland so we had to put some table soy sauce. Wont come back anytime soon

I will start by complimenting the staff - I made a last minute reservation (literally like just 30mins ahead) for my dad's birthday and the staff was kind and helpful to accommodate my reservation and request! The food was great too and the place is cozy. They are very organized. I highly recommend this restaurant :)
