The restaurant is in an old and classy building with a nice outdoor area and a well designed cozy inside. We enjoyed the authentic Japanese food and I was also able to meet the owner who was very friendly and also answered my questions about...some of the plants in the outdoor area. We really enjoyed our stay, the fresh food and the delicious fruit shakes. When we are back in Baguio we will definitely come again.More

I live just a block from Chaya so it’s my go-to restaurant whenever I’m too lazy to turn on the oven or defrost whatever’s in my fridge. Today, it was late lunch at 3:00pm. The place was empty. While waiting for our order, they served...the usual tuna hors d’oevre but I was delighted to have been served a new one — pickled okra. The combination of the tuna and okra really got my taste buds running. Our mains katsu curry, yakiniku, gyoza, and salmon sashimi were the usual; they were perfect. The miso soup today was odd though, it had fish and didn’t have tofu. Still tasted good but it kind of reminded me of sinigang na bangus rather than miso soup. Anyway, the sashimi was orgasmically good and the slices didn’t have those white marbling (if I’m not mistaken, farmed salmon has prominent marbling). Tummies full, we asked for the cheque, and while waiting for our bill, they served their green tea ice cream. It didn’t have mung beans on top but it was still a treat. Arigatou, Sonoko san.More

Got the chance to go up the fabled Pine City to experience the nippy and cold February weather (11-12 °C at night) and my millennial daughter convinced us to have dinner here. Since the family loves Japanese cuisine, we did not hesitate. Chaya exudes that..."feel at home" ambiance as it was obviously a former house, now repurposed as a resto. After gobbling up the free appetizers, we tried their Chirashi Sushi and Temaki Sushi (roll your own sushi) plus traditional Japanese faves, Ebi Tempura and Sukiyaki. To keep us warm was free flowing Japanese house tea!! Service was prompt, friendly, and attentive despite being a full house at that time. Taste was excellent with good value. Will definitely return to try their other offerings.More

I will start by complimenting the staff - I made a last minute reservation (literally like just 30mins ahead) for my dad's birthday and the staff was kind and helpful to accommodate my reservation and request! The food was great too and the place is...cozy. They are very organized. I highly recommend this restaurant :)More

Another Baguio favorite, Chaya has remained consistent over the years. However, walking in to have a meal there is, sometimes, quite difficult during the peak season and I would certainly advise against bringing a vehicle, when possible, because the parking situation is still its major...problem. The food has retained its delicate balance of flavors, from the chirashi to the sukiyaki to the tuna kara-age. Still a good choice for Japanese food, although, a bit pricey.More

Nice location, good ambiance. Sitting outside with a few friends is great, it is cosy and stimulating, the food and draught beer is enjoyable. Inside is good, but not surprising. A bit flat in the taste. But the draugjt beer comoensates for the shortcomings.

So you can sit outside or inside. Outside is nice but can have too many bugs for some people's taste. Also being outside, the service can be a little bit slow. Inside, it is like you are in someone's house. Otherwise, the food is tasty.

We were craving sushi and wanted to try a place in La Trinidad but it was getting late after a spa day and thought it would be closed by the time we got to La Trinidad and Chaya was just a few blocks from the...spa. Pulled in and were informed it was last call for orders as the chef was leaving for the night. We wanted to order the Maki sampler and an order of California rolls extra, but the waiter said that the sampler already had a lot of sushi (it says good for 3-4, there was 5 of us) and recommended we not get the extra California rolls. We also ordered the sukiyaki, chicken gizzard karaagi and at their recommendations some chicken skewer. When it arrived, we knew the rolls wouldn't be enough and asked if we could go ahead and get the order of California rolls, but the chef left immediately after finishing our first order. We were disappointed we let the waiter talk us out of getting it in the first place. That said, the sushi was good, we all enjoyed it, but the variety is very simple Maki rolls. The sukiyaki on the other hand was absolutely delicious. It was just a small order, enough for one small bowl for each of us (five people). We all wished we had ordered more of that, by far the best dish we had there. The gizzards were good, we were glad we ordered them as an extra or we would have left hungry. The chicken skewers, I forget the name, arrived last. They were 5 small skewers with 3 very small pieces of chicken alternated with green onions. The chicken was very tender and they taste delicious, but at the price, they were a huge disappointment. I'm disappointed I didn't take a picture because they were shockingly small skewers for the price. I also ordered a bloody Mary, seeing it on the menu. It is a rare find in the Philippines and my wife and I love them. We ordered two, but they only brought one, and for that, we were finally grateful for the staff. It was literally tomato juice and I assume there was vodka, but even in a small glass it wasn't discernable. There was no spice, nothing. I added Wasabi from the sushi, pepper, salt, nothing could make it taste like anything but tomato juice out of a can. I couldn't finish it, as much as I love bloody Mary's, I hate plain tomato juice. So all of that said, the place is very pleasant, the outside garden area is beautiful and makes for a great place to chill. The food we had tasted good to great (bloody Mary aside), and the staff was extremely friendly. The only thing that really dragged the experience down was the recommendations turned out poorly. Here is why I still give it a 4 instead of a 3: This was my 3rd time here in the last 10 years or so and the food has been delicious every time. Prices are a bit high, but the quality of the food is worth it (with the exception of the skewers). We've had good experiences before and I kind of felt that if we had shown up 30 minutes earlier, it would have been different because afterwards I realized that they were probably making those recommendations because the cook was going home. I can't blame them, considering we did arrive at 8:30pm when they close at 9pm. Still, 30 minutes before closing should be enough time to order. And I think the sukiyaki alone convinced me to bump them back up to a 4 (I started at 3 when I began the review but changed my mind, so take that for what it's worth).More

Expecting that the vegetables would be fresh and tasty in Baguio, we sought a Japanese restaurant that would use these fresh vegetables. Chaya was top 1 in the list of Best Japanese restaurants in Baguio, according to Trip Advisor, so I googled the restaurant to...check its menu. We chose the vegtable tempura, temaki sushi, kani salad, katsudon, and ramen. I loved the vegetable tempura the most, because it was cooked to perfect crispiness since the batter was very thin—almost translucent. The service was quite prompt, although the waiters were not well versed on the menu and could not answer my queries about how the dish is prepared and cooked etc. They give complimentary ice cream as dessert, although the quantity of one teaspoon of ice cream is quite insufficient. There were quite a number of Japanese customers so I thought that their Japanese cuisine is authentic. I would like to go back next time and order more vegetable based dishes.More

Nothing endorses a Japanese restaurant more than seeing actual Japanese diners. It is refreshing that there was no loud greeting upon entering. You are greeted instead by attentive staff. The place is a converted log cabin with a lot of wood panelling, an actual fire...place and high wood beam ceiling. There are only a few tables so making reservations is a must. After ordering, we were given appetizers of young spinach leaves and cooked tuna. The food arrived fast, beautifully plated in unique ceramic plates and bowls. We ordered chirasi, salmon sashimi, sukiyaki, agedashi tofu and nasu, and chicken terikayi. At the end of the meal, we were given complementary mini bowls with tiny scoops of matcha ice cream. What a lovely surprise! We ordered a red bean dessert which had a scoop of matcha and vanilla icecream, with whipped cream and gelatin. Oishi!More

Japanese food craving satisfied! We visited without any reservation and was asked to wait. Waiters were very accommodating and courteous. Owner was so hands on, she set-up our tables and was even the one who took our orders and served them. Very friendly and even...gave us plate and utensils for our little own. The place I think is their house then each space is converted into informal dining spaces which is good, not intimidating but very homey. Good serving size of foods and very delicious especially the salmon carpaccio. Will definitely go back!More
