Yung Kee is an iconic Hong Kong institution, one of the first places we tried on arriving here, and a restaurant we would host visitors to the city when they came. It suffered a drawn-out legal battle between the children of its founder and then,...like the rest of Hong Kong, from the political turbulence and then Covid-closure of the city to visitors. Its third-generation leadership shut it down for a lengthy and pricey facelift, and as what was Asia's world city opens to the world again, we hoped for a great experience again. Sadly, though the restaurant looks gorgeous, when we arrived for our 6:30 pm reservation, only the goose of its signature roasted meats was available, and that underwhelmed when it arrived. Other dishes we ordered took so long to arrive that we canceled them. Staffing was insufficient for the half-full restaurant (something other city establishments are also enduring) and the service demonstrated the stresses that Hong Kong has yet to shake off. We hope that Yung Kee recovers its former mojo, but there's no need to rush to check it out.More
