Recommended by Andy Vu, we took a taxi to this for our first lunch in Hanoi, and it was amazing grill fish and noodle with green and peanuts.

One of the best meal we had on our trip. The sauce man ton (shrimp paste) is smelly, kind of shocked at the beginning but use with the grilles fish, drill, peanuts and noodle; the taste is out standing.
Do yourself & your wallet a favor & stay far far away from this place. Total scam/tourist trap. Cha ca is my favorite dish ever, so we came here by referral of our driver & paid over $50 USD for a toddler sized portion of...cha ca that we were expected to share amongst 4 grown adults. We were literally scrounging the sides if the pan & left the restaurant extremely hungry. This is not a truly Vietnamese eating experience & there are far better places to try thank this way overpriced hole in the wall complete scam. i should add the food was not tasty/quite bland & the cha ca was swimming in oil as well.More
This place has a almost unique point of difference - it serves only one dish. Which is fish which comes fried in a pan to which you add the mixed greens and cook on your table. You also get some rice noodles. It didn't look...like enough but it was fine. To add to the experience it is up a set of stairs that are pretty close to being a ladder. It has been there a long time and decor is not part of the deal but quick and efficient service is. For us it was sonrthing never seen before.More
Beautiful fish - was top class. They just serve the one things, we had never had this style of food before so we hadnt a clue what to do but the staff were lovely and helped us. A lovely experience
Do not go here. You will be ripped off. There are many other restaurants that serves this dish. This place should read SCAM! Over priced
Another place has let their popularity cause them to rest on their laurels. We went for dinner there recently looking forward to a unique and special meal as described by many but what we experienced was completely different. Service was definitely different if your were...a Vietnamese national versus a tourist. As a tourist you got smaller portions, no extras and rough service. Yes we went to the original as we had already been warned about lots of imitations including one across the street. there really was nothing special about the meal though not bad it just felt like another fish dinner. Passed on the full meal which included dessert and just ordered the fish. Turns out the dessert was a banana as we noticed the table next to us show their frustration upon getting this part of their meal. Be warned if you really want to try this unique dish try to find a restaurant away from the tourist crowds or prepare to be disappointed. We were.More
we paid 386k dong for 2 beers, some shallot, noodle, and a few pieces of some food which tasted worse than chicken nuggets from macdonald. This was more expensive than the price we paid for two dizhes plus one beer at a very nice restaurant...with the lake front view. There was no menu, no price, so what was charged was at the mercy of the owner. Avoid this place.More
I visited this place 10 yrs ago. I thought I took my family here for a visit. First of all, it was empty! Secondly, I noticed there is a „kid „ portion and large portion. We decided to take 3 „large“ portions. The food came...out. There were a little big of fish- dried precooked. It was absolutely horrible. The noodles were a bit dried. The worst part was 249,000 per portion. This is a lot of money for a Vietnamese standard. It is time to close down this place. Thanks goodness for the internet. Absolutely the worst food in Vietnam. Please, find something else. I challenge all the food critics to say something substantive about the food besides it is Hanoi stable for many yrs. Time had gone. It is time to move on. Go somewhere. It had its time. It is over.More
Tourists beware!! You get charged per person but only served one portion of fish per table regardless of how many people. Locals get enormous quantities with seconds and thirds. When paying the bill they tried to charge for the serviettes that they gave us when...setting the table😡 Food was average in flavour, definitely wouldn’t recommend this one. They are capitalising on the fact that they are on the tourist map given out in all hotels and charging tourists excessively. Choose somewhere else that sells this local dish.More
Food was so average (no flavour) and service was so poor (asked for drinks twice, gave up as waiter clearly did not care). Have spent 3 weeks in VN and worst meal by far, give it a skip.
The staff at our hotel recommended us this place. Why, is a bit of a mystery to me know. The restaurant only serves one dish (fried fish). Which is fine, it's just nice to know before hand. The food itself was okay. Nothing mind blowing...though. But it is over priced and the amount of food you get is a joke! You pay 170k per person. We were a group of 10 adults. We were served the same amount of food as the family seated next to us - a family of 4 with to small kids. We left the restaurant, all still hungry... The restaurant itself seemed a little dirty and unkept. The service was horrible. HORRIBLE!!! First of all it was obvious that the staff in general treated the locals a lot better then us forigners. They were served more food, smiles and attention all over. The waiter never asked if we wanted anything to drink. Several times we tried ordering beverages but he keept ignoring us. When we finally convinced him to take our order, he only took orders from half of the group. The last half never got anything. When he showed up with our order, he didn't serve us the right things. The beers that we ordered were put in the table un-opened. He just threw an opener on the table and left. By far the worst experience we've had in Vietnam :(More
This place claims to be the Oldest Restaurant Of Vietnam started in 1871. It's a classic and is filled with locals all eating the one dish on offer. Great fun.
We came to this restaurant many times during the last 10 years but we are disappointed to see the quality of its unique dish has been doing down over the years . Actually , its sister restaurant in Saigon can offer much better Cha Ca...than the one in Hanoi .More
While in Hanoi, I had to try the oldest restaurant in Vietnam that serves only one dish (local fish) since 1871 that was recently highlighted on CNN. Warning: The stairs that lead to the restaurant (2nd floor) are narrow and steep. For 170,000 VND (abt...$7.40 USD), you get noodles, veggies and abt 9-10 fish pieces that are abt one inch long in a skillet that cooks the fish and the veggies that you throw in with the house sauce. Very tasty food, but I left still somewhat hungry for more. I would visit again just to take friends for the experience.More
