If you’re looking for a formal authentic Italian restaurant to make an impression in Washington DC this is it. We Noticed the nice bar on our way in where I’m sure you could enjoy everything on the menu, but we sat in the dining room. Very friendly and patient service. Although I must share our experience with the sommelier. We asked for a bottle of white burgundy on the mineral forward side. When she poured it we all personally thought that it was way too acidic, but she assured us that it was fine. When we reiterated that we weren’t interested in having that bottle she held it together well, but you could see that she was frustrated and annoyed. We decided to just go with what we knew which so happen to be a much less expensive bottle and after she poured the first round she did not come back for the rest of the evening. I don’t know why she took our change of mind so personally. Rest of the dinner was very nice, enjoyed the whole fish, the duck, desserts, everything 👌🏼 definitely recommend it for top quality Italian in a formal setting .

I've been to Fiola Mare, but I think Fiola has taken the whole dining experience to the next level. We went in a group of four, and I had foie gras for starter, buscatini for pasta, wagyu for the main course, and chocolate cake for dessert. I have to say I am very pleased with the food. My friends ordered lobster ravioli and fish, and they looked very delicious as well. The waiter was very professional in explaining the dishes and the pairing wine. We had rose champagne, and riesling to go with the foie gras. Overall, we had a wonderful evening at Fiola, and were very impressed with the food and atmosphere. The price is not cheap, but the whole experience lives up to my expectation of a one-star restaurant. Highly recommended.

When I first became familiar with the Michelin Guide’s review of restaurants, I understood that the award of stars was based on multiple factors allegedly focused on the chef and the food itself. However, it seemed to me the facilities, the service and the environment were also the subject of evaluation. Based on those criteria it was long evident to me why restaurants such as the Inn at Little Washington or Alinea or Daniel received three stars. However, over the last decade I believe that the Guide is returning to its roots and placing much greater emphasis on the food – quality, variety and uniqueness and diminishing the value of the facilities and the dining environment. That is the only reason by which I can possibly understand why Fabio Trabocchi’s restaurant Fiola in Washington DC is only one star. The decor, environment and facilities are the equal of any two or three star restaurant I have ever eaten at in any country and certainly reach the level of all of the former Washington DC greats that are now sadly gone. So, what about the food and the service you may ask? Superb! This is a restaurant where, from the moment you open the door, you are confronted by a staff that not only makes you feel welcome but makes you feel like one of the family. This sense of belonging is unfortunately fast disappearing from the food industry. The staff is more than just welcoming – the staff goes out of their way to affably explain everything, answer all questions and accommodate your every need - and always with a smile. Never do you have the sense of pretension, disdain or superiority. More interestingly and perhaps more importantly, all of the staff, including those who serve and remove the plates, become part of the experience joining in the conversation and explanation that makes it feel like home. While I am commenting last on the food, it could just as easily been primo or even the sole focus of this review. It is in many respects so unique as to justify that type of accolade. That said, please understand that the comments on the individual dishes that follow will not be your dining experience as the menu changes with the seasons and the autumn season has just ended. Bear in mind that where possible, the ingredients of the highest quality are sourced from nearby farms. Nevertheless, I would do a disservice to Fiola if I did not mention at least a few of the dishes which I will only describe as having been extraordinary. That list includes the potted eggplant mousse served as a canapé, the pan-seared Foie Gras with Sardinian Mirto Amaro plums accompanied by a chilled Plum Tea, The crown of Pecorino & Raschera cheeses in a brown butter and Matsutake mushroom sauce and finally the Chesapeake Blue crab dome with smoked Steelhead Roe, Pappa al Pomodoro and Sicilian Red Prawn essence. These dishes were worthy of legend but more importantly reflect the skill and talent of the kitchen staff including Josh Kaplan formerly of Atelier Crenn. The entire staff is comprised of experienced specialists who collectively created ambience and an experience that in this writer’s opinion warrants not two Michelin stars but rather three!

Dec 2019 family
My family and I have been fairly regular customers over the past 2 years (mainly at lunch time while the service was available, but also periodically at dinner time). Fiola grew to become our most favorite restaurant in Washington due to the quality of food and service. With excitement and anticipation we accepted your invitation to spend our New Year's Eve at Fiola as we were led to believe by Fiola that it would be a special event complete with live Italian jazz musicians, singers, and ballet performances throughout the night to ring in the new year. Our reservation was for 9pm (and we arrived punctually). Aside from our server (apologies for not remembering his name but he was truly knowledgable, caring and impeccable in his service delivery), the evening was a shocking disappointment. It started with the sommelier, our second experience with her who true to form mechanically and with a biting air of disinterest and disdain offered some lackluster wine suggestions. The Italian "musicians" consisted of a duo who attempted to sing while trying to play their instruments. They sounded more like a couple of college kids pulled off of Craig's list to come practice holding a note at Fiola's. The ballet "performance" was undertaken by a couple of young teenage girls who danced nicely, but to no choreography at all and for a total of about 5 minutes before disappearing for the night. By around 10:30pm or so, all form of entertainment had ended and the restaurant virtually emptied out (see attached photo taken around 11pm on New Years Eve; it was just us with no other back up plan for New Year's Eve and a few other patrons also with no where else to go). And the food (other than the branzino and tagliatelle) were the worst food we have had to-date at Fiola's. Uninspired, flat on flavor, some pieces even tasted borderline spoiled. I shared the above observations and our extreme surprise and disappointment to the manager, whose response made Fiola go from our most respected and favorite restaurant in Washington, to the least respected and favorite. He offered no apology much less an offer to remedy our disappointment and instead - with hubris and derision - snorted that "the ballerinas are with the Nutcracker troupe and are professionals, and the Italian musicians contract will not be renewed next year", shrugged his shoulders, left our table, and the check was promptly delivered to our table. I paid the bill of over $700 for me and my daughter to endure this experience. Fiola appears to fast tracking out of business, one customer at a time...

Bottom line is that Fiola is the best italian experience in the DC area. Whether you are looking for Mediterranean, seafood or formal Italian, you will be treated as as royalty at Fiola. Having dined in DC for many years now, I have no doubt that Fiola is a top five restaurant in DC, up there with Rasika and just a few others.

The anticipation had been building. A dinner reservation at Fiola! Arrived on time and was sat immediately. Wait staff could not have been more attentive, more knowledgeable and more welcoming. The menu prices are paralyzing. Chose the antipasto which the waiter insisted we should order individually, not shared. For $50 it included four architecturally beautiful, but unremarkable options. The tuna cervice was less than 2 oz and it too was in the $40 range but comes with imported seawater. The gnocchi was six pillows floating in a sauce, $50.. Thank goodness for the $ 10 they charge for bread. You get the picture. Summary, micro portions (especially for an Italian restaurant where normally the intent is "mangia". Nothing special about the atmosphere. Overall, the actual experience didn't come close to living up to the anticipation.

Can't thank Fiola's enough for such a wonderful 35th anniversary evening. A 4 hour dinner (try it if you don't understand how it can take that long!) with the 8 course dinner was absolutely perfect. Each course outdid the prior course, and server Mason, manager Guiseppe and sommelier Sa'id could not have been more accommodating and friendly in explaining the entire experience. We chose a bottle of white and red instead of the wine pairing and the selections from Sa'id were impeccable. Complimentary prosecco and anniversary cake in addition to cake for the next morning, multiple thank you cards and a copy of the menu we had just eaten were additional add-ons. Was it a lot of food? Yes, but well worth it! If you have a special occasion to celebrate, you will definitely love the Fiola experience.

First, the service was outstanding and the environment was every bit what it should be for this level of restaurant. The sommelier made an excellent suggestion on the wine – it was the best Barolo I have ever had and Barolo is my favorite wine. However, the food was very disappointing. With the exception of one course, each other course was overly salty, too high in fat content, and not sophisticated in taste. My dinner guest and I both commented afterwards that we were very disappointed in the food and will return.

This is the third time we have enjoyed Fiola. Every time we come, they make us feel like royalty. From the lovely bar and personable bartender to the waitstaff, the place is all quiet refinement. The dining room is elegant and the wine list has good options at all price points- Italian, American and French wines are all well represented. We enjoyed the nine course tasting menu which was just fabulous. Everything from the little hors d’oeuvres with a complimentary glass of (delicious) Prosecco to the original lemon risotto to the lobster with stuffed squash blossom to the amazing white chocolate and cheese course (a dream!) to the tiramisu served in the shape of Italy, we were delighted and surprised at every turn. Definitely an obligatory stop on the gourmet DC circuit!

We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing. The first seven courses were fantastic, with that caviar bite being one of the best things I've had. But it fell apart on the mains, with the lamb chop being very ordinary and unevenly cooked. Servicer is fantastic, as can be imagined for any Michelin-starred place. Desert was petit fours-like, I was hoping for something a bit more upscale. By and large, this was great but just sort of petered out at the end. Drink pours are very generous, you certainly don't lack for wine! The vibe and atmosphere is really superb as well. If I had to do it over again I would have ordered off the menu. Two tasting menus with wine paring is just over $1,150 with tax.

A friend and I have done a girls weekend for decades and after two years of hibernation, we decided to spend the weekend in DC visiting museums and eating well. We were so excited to get reservations at Fiola. It started out fabulously, and the first several courses of the nine course meal were amazing. Then we ate all the bread and they asked if we wanted more, and we said yes. They brought it and then two times within 2 minutes, they asked if we wanted them to take the bread and we said no. The next minute they said they had to take the bread, and brought the cheese course. After the cheese course, they gave us our check and were shooing us out. We watched the table next to us get the soda and dessert courses so we asked for them. They told us we already had them. We are in our 60s, but we do not have dementia. We asked again, and they agreed to bring the tiramisu. It came without the soda and none of the little sweets that we saw the others have. We asked for that. We didn’t get the package others got to take home. Our advice is that if you are two women over 60, your money is not welcome here or maybe to put it more succinctly since we got the bill early, your money is but you are not.

It was a beautiful evening with delicious food. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing, and we either liked or loved every course. The decadent duck main was a particular standout for me, which they customized to my cheese preferences, and the touch of picking out my own knife was clever. Having the delicious bites at the bar with a drink before dinner began was also a fun and unique way to be welcomed! Our server was warm and well-informed yet professional - the service and atmosphere were classy without feeling stuffy. There was not a sommelier informing us of the wines (at least not introduced as such), but our server was knowledgeable and it did not detract from our experience. We would absolutely return and recommend to others!

I have been trying to come here for years on DC trips and finally made it happen. I have plenty of words to describe what I ate, but none of them do it justice. I had a tiny cherry tomato appetizer that was really an eggplant parmesan. I had another that was a tiny caccio e pepe. A tiny pear with goat cheese and seeds. A tiny carbon crusted gnocchi type past with caviar. A tiny branzino crudo tart. I had wagyu beef cheek ravioli in an aged balsamic sauce. I had branzino crusted with lentils and caviar. I had 8 tiny desserts as one big presentation. I had an amazing cocktail (Piedmonte) followed by a great glass of Barbaresco. The staff was amazingly helpful and friendly. I cannot say enough. This is a special place to have a special meal, but it is expensive and worth it.

When my husband and I visit Washington DC, we like to try different restaurants, but Fiola was our favorite during our last visit a few years ago, and we couldn’t resist returning. It’s the very epitome of refined luxury, yet the atmosphere is relaxed and congenial. We found ourselves chatting with the other diners near us as well as enjoying the charming team. Service is impeccable. We ordered the 9 course tasting menu and I had the wine pairings. Everything was superb! We were very pleased that Fiola has maintained the same high quality. It’s definitely worth a splurge.

Booked it for my birthday and we had another couple join us for dinner that night. What an amazing unforgettable and unimaginable perfect experience! Words are not enough to describe how perfect everything at this place is, from the moment you’re sat down to the moment you’re leaving. Oh, the food? All I can say: piece of heaven on earth.
