We had a fantastic meal at Tonic and Ginger. The menu is extensive and well presented so it was difficult to decide what to go for. We finally selected the chicken stays and the spring rolls to start and the beef and the duck as our main course. Whilst they sounded familiar, they all incorporated twists that made them much better than normal. Everything was excellent, the beef our favourite. All the staff were great too, very friendly and helpful.

We went last night. We needed to make two bookings as we wanted four people and I was prepared to sit separately however Simon tried their hardest to accommodate our needs! Our table wasn’t ready so he recommended having a drink at Mr Chapelle and he came and got us when our table was ready! Simon was lovely and friendly and it makes going somewhere even better when the managers are genuine! Thank you Simon! As for the food! Holy god!!! Amazing! We did the feed me chefs menu which is amazing value at $50 odd a person (little extra for the duck curry). Everything was great from the dumplings to the Hapuka Curry to the dessert. Absolutely delish! Thanks again for a great night!!!

Apart from the waiter spilling sauce all over me in my hair, down the back of my jacket and on my jeans, making me feel sticky and smelling of soy the whole night the food was nice. I must say I didn’t enjoy the banquet option personally as I clearly stated my food requirements when asked prior by the waiter and nothing accommodated to me. For the last serving for dessert we were given 3 minutes from it placed in front of us until the waiter stated we had to wrap it up, move and start paying. I understand there is a time limit due to the current circumstances but bringing the food out late is beyond mine and my friends control then being forced to quickly eat not being able to enjoy it or leave it behind in order to be out for the next booking. This honestly has potential to be good but needs some work.

Have been before and loved the food so my husband and I thought we would book for Valentines! Got a phone call to ask if we were interested in a set menu for this special occasion. I’m not sure if this was a miscommunication issue, but when chatting over the phone, I specifically asked if the set menu would provided choices from their normal menu and in particular the chicken wings and was told yes, as both hubby and I loved these! I was not sent the set menu prior to the evening either. Unfortunately, the set menu was just that, set completely!! All set menus I have had before at least give you 2 options to pick from with each course. The only choice we got was to choose what type of wine we would like. Though the dishes were all from their normal menu or very close to, there was no choices! I only ate 2 of the dishes served to us and the steamed rice as I didn’t like any of the others. My husband was full but determined to eat it all as it wasn’t a cheap meal! My suggestion is go eat there as their food is yummy but if they ring to partake in a set menu say no!! Maybe Tonic & Ginger something you could consider next time when organising a set menu, at least provide a little bit of choice for your patrons? Staff were amazing as always and love the atmosphere.

Family night out. We arrived early and chose the Feed Me menu for the four of us. Great food in a fantastic setting. Food kept on coming and we ate as fast as it was served. Before dessert arrived we were told they needed our table for the second sitting....We were then asked to pay our bill on the way to being shown an alternative table. After paying $350+ we were then promptly ushered to the only available table, which was located outside (it was cold). After the table was cleared & wiped down the dessert consisted of a single plate with three small servings. We were each given a spoon.... What a disappointing finish. The floor manager upstairs was rude and didn't show any compassion.

Hi Charlotta, Thank you very much for your review and for your kind words about our food quality & venue. My sincere apologies regarding the end to your meal - what should have been a tasty conclusion sounds like it was disappointing finish. Unfortunately we do have to be strict with our 2 hour time limit for our first seating of tables - this is agreed upon all our tables initially booking. Our second seating does have more time - I would suggest that if you give us another chance (which I hope you do!) you try to book for our after 7pm seatings. I am sorry the floor manager came across as rude and without compassion - I am positive this wasn't the intention. Thank you for choosing to dine with us and for your review! Hopefully we can welcome you back to Tonic & Ginger again soon. Kind Regards, Siobhan - Ops Manager

Couldn’t be more displeased with the meals my friends and I had. We understood that there was going to be a bit of a wait for our meals. We did not think that it was going to be a 35min or so wait. Got burnt chicken that just so happened to be super dry with zero hint of flavour. Also think it’s unfair that I had to wait for my food, then had to wait 35 mins and a bit for it , then had to leave but couldn’t take my untouched food because the restaurant doesn’t have takeaway containers. And to top it all off the was a little insect crawling in one of the entree plates. Probably a fruit fly. Save money and time and go somewhere else.

Tip: get a booking for the restaurant Tonic & Ginger & don’t be put off by the queue waiting to get into the bar. Professional service starts immediately. Feature lights, preserved old building aspects and high ceilings grab your senses right away. Menu was a captivating read. Wait staff don’t make you wait. Tasty food came out quickly. Dumplings made by someone who knows their craft. Never thought I’d get excited by cauliflower, but the firecracker version with bang bang sauce boomed, in a nuanced creamy sauce. I spoke truthfully when telling the waitress that the massaman beef cheek curry could have been the best-tasting curry I’ve had in some time. And enjoyed picking through the fish wings. Highly recommended.

I had heard this was a great restaurant with excellent food, so was looking forward to the experience. Although busy, we were served quickly by a lovely waitperson. We ordered some sparkling water and a bottle of wine. As is the case with SO many restaurants, the wine was not available. Not a great start. Not a big deal, it happens a lot (why?) We were then informed that they had run out of oysters, but that everything else was available. Bugger! Love oysters. So we ordered several dishes to share and a couple of mains. Waitperson comes back to tell us that the cuttlefish was not available. Hmmm, OK, how about the fish wings? Yes, no problem. The replacement wine was good and the entrees excellent. Things are looking up. Unfortunately, that’s where it ended. The eggplant had more tofu than eggplant, the spicy rump cap was too tough to eat (In the words of Al Cjervik: it still had the marks where the jockey had been whipping it!) and a green papaya salad that looked and tasted like it had been in Coles deli section too long. So, we got the bill, were charged for the fish wings, which never arrived, pointed it out at the till and got no apology, but an attempt to charge us one dollar less - no, I think you’ll find it was more than that... A visit to the toilets was even less pleasant, as the restaurant shares their toilets with the pub next door, so the gents was full of pissed blokes urinating on the floor and each other (I kid you not) and the smell appalling. Even one of the pissed blokes said it was disgusting. Go with low expectations would be my tip

Hi Ironman, Thank you very much for your review and for letting us know about your experience dining with us. As a new venue we greatly value all constructive criticism as a way to improve our team, our offering and ultimately our business. I am sincerely sorry that we let our selves down on the night you dined with us. We should have had stock of wine, as well as oysters and I will be following up with the teams. I do not want to offer excuses as this shouldn't have happened. I would like to discuss your time with us further, please email manager1@theoldsynagogue.com.au to discuss. Kind Regards, Siobhan - Manager

Waiter forgot to register two dishes even though we reminded him twice. The ones we got were a combination of bland (like Asian light, no real flavours stuck out) and chewy meat (two beef dishes, supposedly rump cap which when I cook it is fork tender) these ones were chewy and sliced thick which is strange when you don't get a knife, only chopsticks and spoon... You get better food at your local Asian for half the price. At least the dining room was nice, especially the mezzanine looking over the main area and the nice lamps hanging from the ceiling. Plus for the atmosphere, minus för food and service.

Have been twice with different couples. Thoroughly enjoyed both times. On our first visit we were kindly walked through the menu and how the service worked, by our waiter. Found it a bit strange how the food was delivered but it worked so well. The food was delicious and each plate that came out was delivered in just the right amount of time where you didn't feel rushed, neither did you have to wait too long. Our waiter refilled our wine glasses when necessary and was just very attentive, not only our table but the ones surrounding. Recommend this place for an alternative eating experience in a great building.

Full of taste & flavour from beginning to end... Definitely book! Our sitting was a early Sunday evening and it was busy and loud. The food was full of flavour. I can recommend the bao buns (we ordered a second plate), the cauliflower, broccoli, green papaya salad and the tofu. You’ll need to use the sauces from the cauliflower and broccoli on the tofu. The deco is very stylish and high end products have been used. Do expect the waitstaff’s efficiency, presentations, mannerism and personality to mirror/marry a sophisticated Resturant. Food / taste / presentation - 9/10 Food service (very efficient) 9.5/10 Greeting went entering (clumsy) - 6/10 Clothing & personal presentation of staff 6/10 Managers, as a guest/customer I find cheap, tacky and unprofessional is waitstaff asking us to write a review and mention their name so they receive a bottle of wine.

My friend and I were amongst the first customers in this place as we were there on the day it started a live service. There were one or two hiccups with the service but these were handled excellently by the Maitre d. These hiccups rapidly paled into insignificance when the food cameout. I is dertainly among the top 3 places I have eaten. It was exceptional! Interestingly we were not alone in our views, the local paper did a feature naming this as the best venue in town!

We opted for the Feed Me which we were told was a sample of everything - it wasn’t. It was too much, of the cheap dishes, too fast. Apart from the manager the staff could not have been less interested if they tried. Tables next to us also kept asking for the food to slow down. The bar next door was so loud and music overbearing. Anything additional we asked for was refused - basic cocktail not on the menu, oysters as an extra, an extra drink at the end of the meal. This place has potential but staff training and some thinking about guest experience required.

We booked a table over the phone and got email confirmation but when we arrived we were told they had no booking for us which was really disappointing as we were looking forward to it. We were left standing in the foyer for about 10 minutes while it got sorted which was a bit awkward. There was a spare table for two so finally they agreed to let us have it. Not a great start as we felt we shouldn’t have been there. After that our waiter Tim explained everything to us and was great. He made the night a better experience for us. Food was good however they forgot one of the dishes and after the issues at the start of the night couldn’t be bothered asking. The food was good that’s for sure and as it is relatively new I’m sure service will improve.
