To celebrate both my birthday and the end of a great break our hosts booked us into Alambique, where they have eaten many times over the years. It is a special occasion’ restaurant and not one for anyone looking for a cheap meal. In fact...it was probably the most expensive meal during our break and also the best. As mentioned in other reviews of the other establishments Vale Do Lobo has to offer it’s a high end restaurant catering for those with fat wallets, and also a regular haunt of footballers and celebrities alike. The entrance is stunning as you walk through external seating, mainly for peak season situated amongst mature palm trees and gorgeous lighting. The interior is what I’d best describe as a little more dated / traditional but still very nice indeed. Service is what you would expect as in top notch and from the moment you enter to the moment you leave you are certainly made to feel very special indeed. Beautiful freshly made warm bread and oil / butter is difficult to resist to avoid filling yourself up before the ‘main feature’ arrives and this was compounded as they served us a superbly tasty ‘amuse bouche’ consisting of fish, pate and melon. The support act was a good indicator of what was to follow. Between us meals included fillet steak, monk fish, rack of lamb and sea bass and the skill in the kitchen was plain for all to see as everyone’s plates were left clean. The total bill was also the best till last (not in a good way) as it topped off the most expensive meal of our break at around €180 per couple BUT I’d say as expensive as It certainly was it was very much worth it and a lovely birthday memory I’ll have for many years to come.More

The quality of the setting ,welcome ,service and ambience is first class. This large nicely appointed restaurant in a good location is a magnet for the well off clientele in the area. The food is good and consistent but somewhat unremarkable in choice and quality.... Boiled vegetables and baked potato indicate a somewhat lack of innovation . Ambience is excellent and service is first class inspiring envy in UK restaurants for the quality and number of attentive staff. Wine list is extensive and reasonably priced with a correct emphasis of Portuguese wine which is of surprisingly good quality . Overall a very satisfying experience and will return when tourist rush is reduced and hope for some interesting new dishes.More

From the warm welcome, excellent service, delicious food, beautiful surroundings and great wine selection, Alambique was superb from start to finish. Enjoyed it so much we went back a few evenings later.

It was a very busy summer evening, and we arrived about 9.30 when everything was packed. As an Algarve resident, I was hoping for a positive experience I could recommend to others. Not possible. The ceviche starter was nearly inedible, tiny bits floating in a...sea of too-sweet liquid. The one bright spot was the monkfish, prepared very well but served with a Portuguese boiling potato, a wonderful thing, that had been turn into a baked potato by wrapping it in foil. . . . not the thing to do. The biggest failure was the wine service. Big, clunky inadequate glasses, wine decanted into a far too small decanter and the glasses were filled too full, even after asking the staff to slow down. A warm evening, so the red wine was intended to be served slightly chilled, but the decanter was left in the ice bucket until the wine was nearly frozen. Won't go back and won't recommend it.More

Really lovely setting and helpful friendly staff but the food was average at best. I ordered steak with mushroom sauce and it was nowhere near the same level as other local steak restaurants. The sauce was just not very flavoursome. The potato gratin side dish...was bland - it was an expensive meal and just very average. It was a pleasant evening and I can’t see how they can justify such high prices. There are so many other really great restaurants around here I’m not sure we will hurry to go back againMore

Honestly, one of the best places I’ve ever visited. It’s very expensive but you pay for what you get. The staff were very attentive, they couldn’t do enough for us. We even met some celebrities who kindly sat with us at the end of our...meal. Fabulous. We will return many times.More

We have eaten here many times over the years, and although expensive, the food was always great and the ambiance excellent. On this occasion, the ambiance and service was once again impeccable. Unfortunately I can not be quite as enthusiastic about some of the food....My wife and I ordered Pork loin and Pork medallions. Both were overcooked, and I have many times cooked both dishes myself, but far better. In fairness our friends both ordered steaks, and felt they were perfect, cooked exactly as requested. Maybe the pork was just an aberration on the night, I hope so, as Alambique was always an institution of great culinary delights.More
