Had dinner here recently. Not very many in the place and those who were there were drinking not eating so we were surprised with the length of time it took for service and for the burgers to appear. Table was sticky and the cutlery sparse and not very clean. We were given fresh cutlery when we asked- no apology given. The outside area was attractive except those who were there drinking were smoking so we sat inside where in the adjoining room live music was pumping very loudly for 3 patrons. We could not talk over the repetitive music as it was extremely loud- not sure why as it was very early and 3 young girls were the only patrons. The bar staff were not particularly friendly. This was in fact the disappointment of this trip to Northland area.

Stopped in a couple of times for a drink as basically the only bar in Russell. Friendly staff, nice tables to sit outside, they provide music at weekends, did not eat but they have food. Decent prices.

One street back from the Russell waterfront.
We really enjoyed this place.
Live music, pool, darts and great food. Will definitely be back.

We were a family of 8 adults and 4 children, we all ordered our food at the same time but waited another 15 minutes after the first food arrived, some 30 minutes after we had all ordered. Amongst other things we also had the waste of money "platter for 5", that we were told had a bit of everything on it, it was terrible, it barely fed 3 of us and the amount of sauces on the platter outweighed the actual edible food. We also ordered the fish meal (adult and children) it was so overcooked that the fish was like cardboard and tasted like that too. We also ordered desserts, which we waited for 25 minutes for and then finally went to the counter to enquire when they would be ready and the staff had not put them through so there was going to be another 15-20 minute wait, so we opted to get our money back and leave. Not one of our group enjoyed their meal, even the children, who love fish, barely touched their meals, it was just disgusting. I don't know whether there were different chefs on as we have been there before and enjoyed our meals but I will no longer encourage people to go there

we ordered fish & chips, I asked what is waiting time and the waiter said 20 minutes. we ordered coke & beer. our coke was flat. beer was warm and tasteless. After 25 minutes, I asked any update about our meal. the waiter said we are busy, you need to wait 20 minutes to get your food. I mentioned to her that we have been waiting at least 25. She disappeared and 5 minutes later came with badly cooked fish and soggy chips. I would not recommend this place to Anyone!

Our family of 3 arrived here on a hot day at a busy time of year. We ordered food at the bar and the staff advised us of a 45min wait for meals, which was understandable as town was very busy, and we were happy to wait. After an hour and a half I approached the bar and enquired about our food. The first impression I got was that they had forgotten our order, and after the staff checked a second time with the kitchen staff it was 2 mins away. The waitress pre-empted my request for a refund and processed it without any trouble. Bit of a shame really.

We arrived here thinking how cool fun atmosphere with my partner parents and kids until it got got awkward and uncomfortable witnessing the bar manager and general manger treating there staff very very rudely. One staff member in particular was amazing literally running around doing his upmost best was told he wasn’t fast enough while been finger pointed and yelled at. We approached the managers and said that wasn’t okay and they simply said it was there business and this is how they conducted there business. I would never come back for this reason and later found out they also own bad habitats and a few other establishments in paihia which we also now boycott. There is no reason to ever talk or treat people on this way it was simply disgusting 🤮

A friend hosted a group for a mid-winter dinner at a new restaurant in Russell. We were seated in a more private area away from the bar and outdoor dining. The wait staff was prompt and attentive. The food was not typical tavern food at all. The presentations were enticing, and the sauces delicious. A good time was had by all. I'm going back again!

Paid $80 + for 4 cocktails... watching the bar tender making the drinks on her mobile, touching her hair, tucking herself in and tearing our mint for our mojitos. Plonk our drinks down, back on the phone.
Round the corner, Duke of Marlborough we are getting the good service and four quality cocktails $80 deserves.
We live in Opua... local, and Bad Habits on Paihia side...same owners is a lot better. Stick to Paihia. Nauti penguin is just a local beer and wine venue.

3 nights in a row at Nauti Penguin..
A bartender that can make whatever cocktail you like?! What more could you ask for.. (they were simply beautiful - taste and appearance) we literally worked our way through the entire cocktail list and more during our time here, thank you to the lovely blonde bartender!
And the food was some of the best food I have had whilst living in New Zealand, from the homemade pate, to the Thai curry seafood chowder and the pavlova to finish, Yum!!
Thank you to the lovely two ladies who took great care of us throughout the three nights we visited your establishment (i forgot to ask for names names but it seemed like these were the only two front of house staff?)
The Nauti Penguin did not disappoint and we will be back soon for sure!!

Called in for lunch and a drink with a group of friends. I would say we’re not the easiest group to win over, but everyone absolutely loved their meals! Drinks were reasonably priced, live music really added to the afternoon. Would 100% recommend

Stopped here twice! The first time was for drinks, and I tried the special of the day. WOW! Had to go back for another the next day. It was called "dreams are free" and is a raspberry, passionfruit, and tequila drink. Get one! We both had the crispy shrimp tacos the next day and they were the best tacos we've ever had...and we live in the SW USA and travel to Mexico a ton! They also have live music here, so it's a great place for a relaxing, fun afternoon or evening.

Absolutely astounded by the quality of the food here, of the quality I would normally expect in a high end restaurant. Every thing we ordered was delicious, beautifully presented and served quickly. Would not hesitate to recommend and will definitely return whenever in the area.

We turned up for a beer and to watch the football on a wintry Friday night. There's a range of places to sit both inside and out and we chose a quiet spot outside with a TV and heater. The service we had was super attentive and we were well looked after with food and drinks by the friendly bar and security staff. We'll definitely be back. Bar snacks were hot and yum!

The food is great, we went twice during a recent visit to Russell. It is innovative, well presented and very tasty. The IPA battered oysters were a stand out for me.....
The staff should learn a system so they don't have to ask who ordered what, that's so last decade. Get a system folks.
