A touch of Greece in Whangarei

Ok, the location is probably a detractor at this stage, however sitting literally over the water looking at a new marina in an impeccably clean and presentable restaurant makes the trip along Port Rd worth the trip. The Minister of War and I have now been there twice for lunch and on both occasions were seriously impressed with the Greek-themed food and wine on offer. The menu covers the usual favorites like; Saganaki, dolmades, moussaka, Squid, and many other delicacies such as the custard in filo pastry, save room for this. Having been to Greece and experienced traditional food I was seriously impressed by the quality, freshness, and quantity. The service was professional and courteous and the decor while obviously Greek was not overdone and tasteful. Sitting there watching boats drift by could almost have you back in a Greek Port like Rhodes. Seriously try the Greek white wines, they match and complement pretty much all of the cuisine. Once the new marina and residential development take off this place will star, so go now while you can still get a table. Only one thing for outside diner's comfort provide a couple of blue and white striped sun umbrellas. We will be back with friends.

My favourite Whangarei (& NZ Greek) restaurant

By far my favourite Whangarei restaurant. Food and service is great, the modern-Greek menu is just right, and everything is done without fuss so you can relax and enjoy yourself. The location is a bonus, so good to be away from the bustle of the city and no parking hassles, just enjoy the outlook onto fishing trawlers, the sweep of the river and the hills. Thanks everyone!

Authentic tasty Greek cuisine, fair value for money

It was our first time there, our friends second time. I enjoyed the efficient online booking . The restaurant has a great location on the harbourside. Table settings could have been more authentically Greek. Staff were welcoming and attentive throughout the meal. We ordered the mixed grill for four to share. ( included 4 chicken kebabs, koftas and lamb chops as protein, served with chips and tomato salad and greek sauces). Food was delicious, well presented and seasoned. It represented fair value for money and we will return. Recommended.

We had a lovely lunch and the staff were great . When I went to pay the bill I noticed that there was a $1.00 surcharge for trim milk. I asked why and was told it costs them to hold trim milk in stock. This made the coffee $7.50. I checked with 3 of my local cafes and they were astounded. Trim milk is only approx $3 so I paid for 2/3. I replied to their email and have not heard a word.

Terrible experience won’t be back.

Music was blearing. My family had two people with hearing aids and to hear any conversation they have them turned up. They refused twice to turn the very bassy music down. My daughter got a headache and I had to leave and sit with her in the car. Waitress refused to serve a scoop of ice cream to a child …they don’t serve ice cream on its own even though it comes with other desserts . It took 2 hours to get our mains … absolutely terrible experience. Won’t be back. It took 2 hours to get our mains … absolutely terrible experience. I have previously visited Acropolis and had fabulous meals, I've highly recommended this place to many friends and colleagues including my current team for our Christmas lunch celebration.....but no more. I tried repeatedly over the past 24 hours to call to give a pre-order for lunch as we were a largest group and had been advised they closed at 2, someone eventually picked up the phone less than an hour out from our booking. He then proceeded to say they had no booking for us, then found the booking but said it hadn't been confirmed, then read out my colleague's confirmation email where she clearly stated she was confirming the booking with one less person than originally booked. He still maintained we hadn't confirmed (despite him reading me the confirmation email) and we could not be accomodated. Very rudely, blaming my colleague for not confirming after they sent their confirmation that the decreased number in our party had been noted...admin error their end, but no apology, just told me it wasn't his problem. I then had to find another venue that could take us with 30 minutes notice and communicate to my team, some of whom were on the road to the restaurant!!! I told him people were travelling from out of the area including Auckland, he dismissively told me they get told this all the time. So be careful, it appears to be hit and miss at Acropolis these days, I don't know what is happening but this is sad and disappointing. I won't be risking it again.

Just Stunning

Just Stunning, wow, the most beautiful, flavoursome food I have ever eaten, can’t wait to go again. I wanted to lick the plate, it was that good. I am gluten free, was apprehensive to try a new place, but wow, gf options with so much flavour it was such a delight to find, and the service was so refreshing, happy, and yes the owner, but wow so dedicated to making this restaurant happen, come on locals, visitors, everyone, support this fantastic food experience, you won’t be disappointed.

Authentic & Delicious

It was our first time trying this place, and I highly recommend it! The setting and food was amazing. We felt like we were in Greece, sitting by the water and enjoying the sun. The food and authentic Greek wine were divine. The waitress was also Greek, very friendly and attentive and beautiful pronunciation and descriptions of the foods for us. We will definitely be back!

Too much salt

The venue is lovely if a bit remote but so nice to look out at the water. The food was fresh, beautifully presented with good waitress service but there was a problem which we mentioned to the waitress. Everything was oversalted, especially the main course. She replied that that was a common concern and she had already told the chef but it seemed to make no difference. She said we could have asked for no salt (and if we came again we would) but we were not expecting such a heavily salted dish. And of course there is nothing you can do if there is too much salt in the dish already. Another concern was that when we went to pay the bill at the counter we saw a board with a “Special” that we might well have ordered had we been made aware it was on offer. However we were not informed by the waitress of the option, nor did we see the board as it was tucked under the counter. We mentioned this when we paid our bill but the staff member simply said sorry. We would have been more impressed if she had said “Oh I will put that right tomorrow” or something like that. Like the salt problem we thought nothing would change. It was an expensive meal and sadly rather disappointing.

Lifetime Memory of a Meal

Yesterday our small party had a meal that will remain in the memory banks. Personally, I can say that every aspect of my food and drink was perfect and such a marvellous combination of flavours. The staff were marvellous and it was a joy to eat in such a nice atmosphere and with a wonderful view. What this team is achieving is very special - it’s not often that I’ve ever felt so pleased with a meal out. Thank you to the team at Acropolis. I hope we can make many more trips down to visit.

Great food, great view!

My partner and I recently had a late afternoon lunch here. We got the mixed share platter for two and we were thoroughly impressed. The amount of food we received was decent for the price and it was exceptionally cooked. The service was also top notch. The waitress was kind, approachable and attentive. Ontop of all of this the location of the restaurant is stunning with a beautiful view outlooking the ocean.

Last night was my first visit to Acropolis Bar & Grill. I loved it. They have an extensive food and wine menu and the servings are generous. The food was fabulous, the service was friendly and faultless, and the setting on a sunny warm Whangarei evening was perfect.

Like we were back in Athens

I heard this place was good, having holidayed in Greece a few years ago for three months, I must say the food is 100% Legit. It was like we were back in Greece, the flavours were bang on. We have travelled a fair bit and it is always hard to find authentic food from overseas back here in New Zealand. We have already re booked for a group of five people for next week. Do yourself justice and order the souvlaki in a wrap, your taste buds will thank you. Oh and the staff are happy, bubbly and friendly as.

This was a 'Wow' dinner. We started with a bottle of Greek wine, which was fruity and fragrant but still had dry notes (stored that in the phone to look for). We opted for mezze plates to share. Started with Tyrokafteri dip with pita, soooo good! Lamb meatballs and filo triangle cheese pies. The 'Wow' came from the flavour and texture contrasts, there was a really different vibe of sweet, salty, creamy and crispy. We would have ordered more but we were pleasantly full without being stuffed! So we opted to finish by sharing the Loukoumades with vanilla ice-cream and almond. Again, all about the textures and flavour contrasts. Just a glorious dinner in a beautiful setting! Please try it!

The food was tasty but plates mostly filled up with fries! Pricey and staff weren't exactly friendly or efficient . Don't expect dessert if it's close to kichen closing. A group of us missed out because waitress couldn't be bothered taking our dessert order. We were all looking forward to baclava so we missed out and they missed out on $$.
