The Maitre D was super friendly, noticing that our party was not ideally seated. He asked if we would like to move to a quieter area which we duly did. Even so it was a bit noisy for our party of 13 to be able to converse easily. The food was disappointing, I ordered Twice Cooked Pork Belly, tasty enough but overwhelmed by the beans! So many beans! Nobody could eat that many beans. My partner's dish was also overwhelmed with beans. However the duckfat potatoes ordered for the table were great, and a good substitute for the Potato & Spiced Cabbage Croquettes which were not to my liking. A different server came to the table to offer a dessert menu. Boy did she try to sell us some desserts! Was there a competition in the kitchen to see who could upsell the most desserts that night we wondered. Honestly it was really a bit too much, although we were a reasonably fun group, she couldn't seem to read the table at all and it was really hard to encourage this pushy wait person to move on to another table. I have to return to this restaurant in December with a large group on a business trip, I hope they've run out of beans and that it's a set menu.

We can for brunch on the weekend of the 13th June and we’re disappointed with the experience. 2 of the food dishes we had were decent for a breakfast. The Benedict and a pizza. The breakfast tostadas I would not recommend- bland and the guacamole was pre frozen, watery and still a bit frozen. The worst part about the visit was the wait- close to an hour we waited for the food which if I’d been told when we arrived “hey, there’s a 45 minute wait for food at the moment” we could have made an informed decision. Instead we almost walked out it took so long but as we were super hungry so we waited and it made the food experience worse. I Will not return here I think- the food is mostly good, the experience was terrible

Me and my partner were in Whangarei for the day and wanted somewhere nice for a late lunch. I’m coeliac and allergic to dairy so finding safe places to eat can be tricky but after looking at Quays menu I was very pleased! Loads of gf options and catered to df too! We had calamari to start which was absolutely delicious then for main I had fish of the day with fries (seperate fryer for all coeliacs wondering) and my partner who can eat whatever had an amazing pizza. He’s also a chef and if he says it’s good it’s good! They did have pizzas I could have eaten too so next time I’m having that! Lovely setting by the waterfront and staff were all super friendly. Top service from our waitress Gemma, she was brilliant and knew how to handle allergies. I felt I could trust her from the start which is a big thing for me eating out! Quay catered to my needs without a fuss and the food was yum, a top place for any meal out and especially for any coeliacs and allergy sufferers - this is a safe option in Whangarei. Thanks Quay team :)

We visited Quay restaurant on Sunday the 31st of September, we had a lunch booking for 3 adults at 1pm. We were seated on the deck outside immediately, which was nice. We ordered drinks and some starters, and I'd have to say, the black salt Calamari was nicely done. We'd been told when I ordered the Sirloin meal that "there might be a little bit of a wait time with that meal," but an HOUR AND A HALF LATER, out comes my wife's pork belly meal, followed by my son's burger and lastly my Steak meal. The steak meal which was served with a potato gratin, spinach and feta was overpowering with a salty flavour that just ruined it for me. To be fair, the French wait staff were quite apologetic about the excessive wait time, but clearly the food was not worth the time it took to get the food to our table. We won't be returning, overall I'd give the dining experience a 3/10.

Lunch with friends from Australia during the week, started well with a cool waiter who got our drinks sorted quickly. Ordered starters and mains, we got the rib eye to share, ordered medium rare, came out almost Blue. They took it back, came out medium well. 🥴 Two of the others had the scotch fillet, ordered medium, came out medium rare- this wasn’t such a big issue- they still ate it. Sides didn’t arrive until we’d finished the overcooked rib eye. Piss poor.

Went along for a nice dinner for 2. Ordered some drinks and after waiting for some time we found they had been delivered to another table. So they ordered some more drinks for us and again after waiting for some time they tried to deliver them to another table until we called out. Unfortunately it went down hill from there. We cut into the chicken entrée to find it was raw inside, they offered another but we declined. The Manager came out and apologized and said they were very busy and stressed ... as if that is a reason to serve uncooked food! The Lamb Rump was advertised as having deep fried Brussel sprouts but we got deep fried nearly charcoal broccoli .... The Chicken Supreme Wild Mushroom Wellington was so overcooked that it was hard to distinguish the mushroom from the pastry. All in all a very bad experience for a couple that dine out regularly. Sorry The Quay, but we won't be back.

Unfortunately this restaurant relies on its location. Inside is packed and noisy. Outside if you can get a table is lovely locale. The food just lacks. Calamari, floury coating weird dry onion on top, even a wedge of lemon or mayo might have helped. Chips ok

Great location, staff very friendly, however we had to wait for our meals for an hour. Others arrived after us but had their food before us. When asking when the food would arrive, we were told “any minute”, however it was still nearly 15 minutes before we had it. We were about to leave. I think they must have forgotten us and have hastily put together our meals. The beans were undercooked and the meat only just warm enough. That’s 2 stars down. We were never asked during the meal whether everything was ok, nor when we paid. For a place of that price range I’d expect those questions. That’s another star down. So it’s only 2 stars in the end. Oh, and the food was “pretty good”, however price-adjusted “ok”. Won’t return.

Went in with my daughter to have breakfast, wanted an outside table. There were at least 6 tables outside free and when we went to get seated. The concierge came across said all the tables were taken and she was holding them for people who had booked for lunch. Yet it was only 10am. Felt our apperances at this restraunt were not good enough to eat there. Yet we drive a 6 figure car as a run around and own a 7 figure house. #smalltownmentality

I rarely post a negative review but the staff’s could-not-care-less attitude to poor food has really irked me. There was so much sauce on the chicken burger that the bun on top and on bottom of burger was actually soggy and I could not taste the chicken but only the sauce. We complained to the waitress who said “I could tell the kitchen but they won’t do anything”. The guy on the till could not have cared less when we said the food was poor. No apology, no offer to reduce the bill, nothing. The restaurant is clearly trading on its nice location and staff/ management care neither about the quality of the food nor customer satisfaction. I would not recommend eating there.

Visited Quay for a light and late lunch after a walk in around the Whangarei Harbour. The head of wait staff assumed we were coming in only for a drink and proceeded to quite insultingly specify that we must order food and each person needed to order something individually. It felt as if we were being lectured and told to take our business elsewhere.

We didn't make a booking but were able to get a table for two even though the place was full (I only saw 3 free tables so we were in luck that night). The food was delicious, we ordered bread and dips and the tasting platter to start and and for mains we had the rib eye (medium rare). I can't fault anything. The food was amazing and the guy/waiter who served us was so welcoming and charismatic it made the experience that much better. I would gladly dine here again.

My husband and I had lunch here last Friday, the service was excellent!!! The food we ordered was lovely and the alcoholic beverages lovely and cold. The rest room was lovely and clean, just a bit dark but nice facilities. The waitresses all had smiles, knew what the specials were and also had good advice on the wine, will definately be back when we go through Whangarei again.

You would think that if your wife was still reading the menu, that you would not be asked by 5 different wait staff if you are ready to order. When the eye fillet arrived, the vegetables looked amazing. I was not expecting that they would be so over seasoned that salt dominated. Over many decades, I have never had a rare steak so over cooked that it was dry and had all the flavour cooked out of it. A meal check would have corrected the problem, but there was none. This restaurant was once held in high esteem but now under the new management, obviously, no longer. Don't waste your time to only be underwhelmed.

After reading the book regarding this restaurant group we thought we would try to visit all 6 from the book. The Quay, Whangarei had been nice on another occasion but today it was terrible not only for us but we were hearing complaints from tables on both sides of us. Not only did they forget our order after we’d sat there for 1 hour and 15 minutes and this only came to light when we finally asked how much longer? We were not checked in on once. They did not offer to immediately put the order through for us. We left feeling so annoyed and decided to go back and talk to the manager. He had just walked in and wasn’t even listening to us as he held a ringing phone in his hand and wanted us to just go away. Then after he finally said I’m sorry but we’re under staffed he had the audacity to say ‘ I hope you’ll try us again’. Obviously that will not happen and our plans to visit the rest of the group of restaurants has changed. So not only were we extremely disappointed with this experience when we are here to enjoy a few days away but the response from the manager added fuel to the fire. Not impressed and not visiting again.
