Traveled 11,000 miles only to find the road closed and our Milford Sound excursion cancelled. Walked around town for awhile and happened on this quaint appearing small venue on a side street with an interesting looking menu and decent beer list so made a reservation with our first hint coming from availability limited to two time slots. Chose the early slot and actually had about 20 mins when we could hear the 60’s pop music playing until it was drowned out by the throng of eager patrons. Started with an Emerson Porter from Dunedin followed by excellent beet root and Redcliff salads. Mains of smoked salmon and the vegetarian special of grilled eggplant, zucchini and portobello mushrooms on puréed cauliflower with blue cheese. Staff was attentive and colloquial and observed to have the patience of Job as the party at the next table wanted the sources of virtually everything on the menu!. We continued with a craft Stout while reviewing the dessert menu and ended up ordering three because they were also offering local berries to compliment the sticky pudding and chocolate tart we couldn’t leave without, definitely worth the 90 minutes on the elliptical that will cost!! And the whole meal , since tax is included in pricing and tipping is apparently not customary here, was half what we would have paid for like fare in Boston. Now that we’re spending our Godchild’s inheritance on a fly over of Milford Sound tomorrow, I for one would have ben’ just as pleased to return here instead.

Do not think this is a small cafe by the appearance from the front, this is a beautifully laid out restaurant inside. I Popped in before dinner service was available, was slightly disappointed but then when I saw my "bar snack" I soon cheered up 3 skewers of venison, quite simply the best "bar snack" ever.. If you want to visit I'd suggest ringing, it was nearly fully booked for the evening I was passing through

This was next door to our hotel so was great to come here for a drink after a long day out. happy hour is between 5-7 and it’s about $15 for a beer and a glass of wine. The staff here are super friendly too. One evening we came here for dinner, again the staff were great and I really enjoyed the salmon but unfortunately the venison my husband had was quite tough. Still highly recommend though. They have good playlists too!

We were recommended to this restaurant as the best in Te Anua so had high expectations for our visit. We went for dinner and found the service a bit too fast but friendly. Our meals were a little disappointing. I had salmon - nice but lacking something special. My husband and a friend had venison - they said it was OK but for a gamey meat it seemed a bit bland. The best choice seemed to be a friend who had lamb which she said was delicious. We tried a couple of different bottles of wine which our waitress recommended - pricey and not ones we would choose again. We didn't stay for dessert and left disappointed.

Knowing that this restaurant is popular, we arrived fairly early for dinner. There is a menu posted in front of the restaurant which does not mention that you MUST have a booking to eat dinner. Not knowing this, we saw that most outside tables were open so we went inside to place our drink and food order. After pouring our drinks we were informed that only snacks could be ordered for outside tables. In order to be served dinner entrees you need to reserve an inside table ahead of arrival. We were VERY disappointed, especially since we then had glasses of wine to drink without food.

Booked online but apparently they didn't receive it and I was made to feel liable as I hadn't received a confirmation email (I had booked a weeks worth of accommodation and restaurants for our trip so easy to miss one confirmation not having pinged in) Maitre D' went to some lengths to accommodate us but we still had to wait for over an hour in a cramped bar with no room to sit for the first 20 mins - would have been nice to have been offered a glass of house wine or ale on the house as their booking system was at fault. We finally were taken through to eat, meals were slow in coming and my steak was tough and tastless and I'm sure was not the cut promised on the menu. My lasting impression was overpriced and not at all 5 star dining, staff were fairly self-important and not overly friendly. Wouldn't go back.

All the locals tell you this is the best place in town, and it has a lot to recommend it - great service, a lot of character, and huge servings of well-cooked food. But we'd hoped for a little more, perhaps victims of the reviews. No complaints but the food was, for the price, in need of something more than simply well cooked, and large serves of meat. There's a good selections of wines by the glass - both local and across NZ, and the staff were very well informed and very helpful. Make sure you get an inside table in Winter as the covered area out the back was freezing even in Summer. The mains, and entrees were so big, we had to skip dessert.

The service and atmosphere at Redcliff was excellent. Our entrees and mains were a bit hit and miss. The beetroot salad had more feta than beetroot and the feta was served in large chunks. The rabbit agnolotti with herb butter was delicious. The slow roasted pork belly main was incredible. A generous serve and delicious. The venison main was cooked well but the dish overall was underwhelming. If you would like to eat at Redcliff I would recommend booking ahead as it is a small restaurant and they were very busy.

In preparation for our arrival in Te Anau I researched where 2 couples from the USA with varying tastes might dine. The Redcliff Restaurant could not have hit the mark more. The menu has something for every palette, including vegetarian options. Cocktails to rave about include a margarita and a dirty martini Our tables' order included, salmon, venison, and beef - all done to perfection. Dessert chosen was the chocolate caramel and mousse tart which was split between 2 of us and thoroughly enjoyed,. Service and ambience 5 star. Prices were very reasonable given the quality of the food. Reservations recommended, Enjoy!

For me the Cliff is magic. Teaming with atmosphere the building is idiosyncratic and quirky, the staff led by the safe pair of hands Shane delighful and the food offerings full of life and personality. Each night is an event every element will offer something special, repartee, food, music. You can go out back which has a frontier feel or enjoy the bar and front space and then there is the inner sanctum where the quieter couple diners will engage in convivial conversation. The place just oozes charcater from every paw and yet without the rigourously disciplined chefs and the maitre de and all the team it would come off the rails. How is that balance achieved experience. It doesn't get that good and be consistant by accident. Thak you to all and I wish those one or two members of the hospitality team moving on all the best with their journeys.

Stopped on our way to Milford Sound for lunch. The food is definitely better than the decor may suggest. We enjoyed a lamb salad and venison salad for lunch with some seasonal veg and tabbouleh to share for two. The meats were cooked perfectly, everything seasoned and cooked well. Delicious meal! Can't recommend enough in a small town

Perfectly grilled steak. The salmon for entrees fresh and good. Speciel plate for children, small bites of a lot of good dishes gave our 7 year old a speciel experience too. Friendly staff and quick service. We will come back.

Although it may be the best food in Te Anau, (and was recommended by several people), we were unpleasantly surprised by the poor service by our waitress, who besides the relatively slow service, ended up abandoning our table (5 people) prior to us finishing/ordering dessert. (We later saw her in the bar area, having a drink). Manager ended up taking our dessert order (and they ran out of one of the items we wanted to order) and providing our bill.

This is one of the places you simply should not judge by its exterior. From the outside it looks like a old run down cafe . Inside it is nicely decorated but its food is the most interesting menu that I have seen in 3 weeks of a road trip around New Zealand better than some very good wineries. Service is simple, friendly and honest . Best to book as not only they are very busy but also they like to spread the service so that the kitchen is not over stressed and you do not have to wait too long . The portions are on the generous side so unless you have just done a long hike you may want to share a starter. I have mentioned the 3 dishes we had , but would also like to have tried the Curried Parsnip and Apple soup ! Maybe tomorrow!

I was really looking forward to my visit and my meal as I’d heard good things about this restaurant. I had the blue cod for my main. It was quite nice, but not exceptional. My aunt, who’s a basic cook had served me blue cod a few days before, and hers was on a par with this dish. For dessert, I had the ‘deconstructed meringue’. I learned that deconstructed merely means uncooked. I was served uncooked beaten egg whites with canned boysenberries. Not fresh as I’d hoped. My sister had the lamb, which she enjoyed and a vegan dessert, which she also found tasty. I think I drew the short straw.
