Went on NYE for a $75 tasting menu. Given it was NYE, the prices were understandable and the first drink was also included. Undoubtedly, we were blown away by the amount of food and the quality! A ridiculous number of entrees, mains and dessert were served and the menu was customed to our dietary needs. It was not overly spicy but incredibly tasty. The service was excellent and the meal was well received by all. Will definately be back.

Myself, my wife and our 6 year old son had a delicious dinner at Makan while in the city for a school holiday getaway. We were looking for some real Indonesian flavours to fill the void the international travel ban has created and Makan far exceeded our expectations. We aren't massive eaters and shared some plates to try a few different meals. We started with the soft shell crab bao buns, which were a fantastic starter and got us excited for what was to come. For the mains, we shared a few personal favourites - Nasi Goreng, which would be up there with the best we have ever had! - Sate Ayam. My wife finds it hard to find a good traditional sate ayam with the right blend of spicy and sweet, but this was spectacular. Juicy tender chicken with a sauce that we wish we could get by the bottle! - Babi Guling. A favourote of mine that takes me back to the mountains of Bali. A slightly different take to what I am used, but I wonderful surprise and the sambal matah was just phenomenal. From the stunning decor, the wonderful service we received, to the mouth watering Indonesian fare, Makan is a must visit whilst in Melbourne. We can't wait to return and work our way through the mouth watering menu.

• It's a cosy place with a good vibe. • Lovely helpful staff always ready to do their best • Foods different to what you eat at other places. After being here twice, I feel their starters are quite good and mains too. They recommend sharting food. The crispy soft shell crab bao is good, grilled ribs were delicious 😋, mee goreng is a must try. I didn't enjoy the barramandi 🐟 salad so much as the barramundi was soggy. • The leechi martini is quite popular there and worth a try if you are thinking about a drink or two. • Black sticky rice salted coconut 🥥  desert was good and so was the panacotta Hope it helped in you decision making :)

Ordered several entrees, grilled chicken wings, fried chicken ribs, and soft crab buns. All were excellent. For the mains we had a beef Rendang and a Nasi Goring. Beef Rendang was also excellent. A healthy serving of beef, well cooked and spicy and a bowl of rice. The Nasi Goring was very disappointing. Certainly not traditional. Says on the menu it comes with egg, but no egg on top like a traditional one. And certainly not spicy. The rice, supposed to be the hero of the dish, was overtaken by heaps of cabbage. And the chicken required a microscope. Otherwise, service was good and fast. Place was full. Music was not from Indonesia. It's a little hard to find and not on Collins St. You have to enter down a dingy laneway from little Collins St

I brought my partner and her parents to Makan as I was hyping Indonesian cuisine to them for weeks. My colleague also recommended the restaurant and the reviews and pictures looked pretty good. I was excited. It was expensive, but I didn't care if the food was good. As an Indonesian, I can definitively say that this is NOT Indonesian cuisine. I get it's supposed to be Western fusion, but a deconstructed tiny portion of pre-mixed Gado Gado served on a Perilla leaf is as far from authentic Gado Gado as you can get. The "satay" was essentially BBQ chicken skewers, and had no charr or fat on it. You could serve that to me in a Texas Roadhouse and I wouldn't know the difference without the peanut sauce. The sambal balado was not spicy at all and tasted more like salsa. It was watery. There was no kick and barely any acidity to it. The only reason I'm not giving this a one star was the staff. They were very polite and helpful. I also liked the soft shell crab buns and wagyu rendang, and these were a great example of how fusion could work well when flavours complement. The rest of the dishes we ordered - the cabbage, the octopus - were all forgettable. I have never written a review before, but that's how disappointed I am right now.

Tucked away in the foyer of a large corporate building, was an unlikely venue for a great restaurant but great it was! Fantastic Indonesian food, we had King fish, chicken satays (awesome), nasi goreng and soft shell crab buns followed by an outstanding chocolate coffee dessert. Service was friendly and efficient. Definitely be back and reasonably priced. Go!

Wonderful meal Saturday night at Makan with another couple. Chose the 59.00 tasting menu. Wow, come hungry. Had 5 starters, then 2 mains, with a side of green beans. By the time the delicious mains came; beef brisket rendang (favourite) and pork knuckle came we barely had room left, but did our best. Wonderful intense flavours. Not sure about the corn on the cob which was the 5th starter. Not necessary. Really chilled space, ambiance, very professional, friendly service. Will return and order singular dishes. A total winner.

Make it a treasure hunt. It's hard to find. But once inside you enter a stylish restaurant. Ordered the chicken satay and the beef rendang. Both dishes are delicious. But both also big. You can easily share it with each other. I was alone so that's not possible. But I will try to eat there again. Recommended!

Makan is a lovely Indonesian Restaurant hidden away in the heart of the CBD. My family and I enjoyed a fabulous dining experience here thanks to our friendly, attentive waitress Hadassah and her advice about menu choices. We decided on the 'feed me' option with a variety of sharing plates - we weren't disappointed. Particularly worthy of mention were the Hiramasa Kingfish, pork slider, lamb ribs, prawn mie goreng and grilled chicken set. The ice cream sandwich and pineapple tart were excellent desserts to finish on.

Went here for dinner with work colleagues and it was fantastic. The food was amazing. Fast and friendly service, we walked in without a booking. The food was delicious, we tried entrees and mains and every dish that came out was fantastic. hard to choose a favourite but amongst the highlights were the Pork Belly skewers, the char grilled corn, chicken ibs and the nasi goreng. So tasty, fresh, great variety on the menu, they do like chilli, so you may need to ask for less spicy if you aren't a chilli fan, but so worth the visit,

We are visiting Melbourne and my sister insisted that we try this Restaurant for Indonesian food since I love Asian cuisine. Since we had 10 people we could not physically go to the restaurant for a policy says over 8 pax NEED to order a SET MENU this is rather disappointing so we decided we will order online and collect food (Since they do not have delivery service, rather disappointing too) We ordered few dishes costing over $300 . brought home (1/2 Drive to home) I opened the boxes just to try before sitting down for dinner. ALAS, the food- meats were ICY cold and rice was just LUKE warm, taste VERY disappointing NO FLAVOUR or SALT, Just some tasteless sauce brushed over and meats were so bland I felt sick . Overall VERY BAD and Disappointed, will NOT RECOMEND THIS place so called MAKAN A highly rated restaurant for food.

A business meeting with 8. Tasting plates were regular and not one that we would not recommend. Gohu, Sate Babi, Kepiting Soka, Ayam Goreng Tepung, Babi Guling, Ikan Bongkot, Bebek Goreng and Mie Goreng. Highly recommended.

Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
