In Indonesia, a warung is a small restaurant serving traditional Indonesian dishes. Pondok Rempah has been open around four years, it's a busy little place. I had bakso sapi, which is beef meatballs with noodles in soup. It was very tasty. I had some chilli sauce on the side. I also had an iced coffee, which was very pleasant. It looks to be popular with overseas visitors. It has a contactless menu. Pondok Rempah is just down from the Victoria Markets.

Certain Indonesian dishes can be found at almost every Indonesian restaurant, such as nasi goreng (fried rice) and satay, barbecued skewers with peanut sauce. I must say the food Pondock Rempah serves is traditional Indonesian food, simple but delicious.. Pondock Rempah is vegetarian friendly and serves halal food.

Pondock Rempah means 'House of Spices' in Bahasa Indonesia. It's in Elizabeth Street, just down from the Queen Victoria Market. This type of small restaurant is called a 'warung' in Indonesia. It has a good range of traditional Indonesian dishes, including chicken satay, dumplings, nasi goreng, fried meatballs and that Javanese specialty, gado gado. Pondock Rempah serves Halal food.

My wife ordered the Nasi Goreng (which was great), but I was disappointed with the Cap Cai stir fried vegetables dish. I normally go for the chicken with my stir fried vegetables, but when we went to this restaurant, the pictures that accompanied the menu showed lots of seafood, so I went for that. Not only was there so little seafood on the plate, but it had 6 pieces of Tofu, which I dislike. I don't recall any Tofu when I saw the picture of the meal on the menu. Also when I went to pay, I didn't see any notice about surcharges being applied if you used your credit card, so I paid by credit card and was hit with a 1.5% surcharge. A good business displays all extra surcharges and/or advises customers of this when they are about to pay.

Recalled great holiday memories of Nasi Campur (rice & ‘bits’) over brunch at Bali warungs. This restaurant helped me relive the Indo food experience in heart of Melbourne. Friendly staff seated me at open 9 am. Salivating over pictures in menu. Ordered their Signature Dish (called Tempeh something … but is a type of Nasi Campur). Wonderful presentation and delicious. Back soon.

The food and condiments( home made and able to buy jars of the sambal chilli etc) were authentic and the portions, to me, were large! Staff friendly. Highly recommend. Near the Victoria market so easy place to visit .

We have traveled in Indonesia a lot, love the food there and even cook it ourselves in Germany. Never hated that kind of authentic food outside Indonesia! Especially the rendang…. Went again for breakfast and liked the NasGor (fried rice) as well.

Had a delayed start to work & knew Pondok opened at 9 am. Terrific, can enjoy an Indonesian breakfast … yummy. Didn’t disappoint. Ayam (chook) delicious with rice, sambal & broth bowl. Friendly service and happy family vibe in staff. Back soon.

My nasi goreng was delicious with authentic Indonesian flavour, the portion was generous and it was very reasonably priced. It's a good spot for a quick feed but not a place to linger!

My first time eating at an Indonesian restaurant, after having tried so many cuisines, and I'm glad it was with Pondok Rempah I was walking around CBD looking for a good option for dinner, when I passed by this restaurant, noticed it was popular, had a closer look, and went for it They have a very extensive menu, around 20 pages, plenty of options of meals mainly, but also appetizers, desserts, and drinks I personally ordered seafood salt pepper (squid, scallops, prawns, with rice and omelette), and upon request it was made less spicy that it usually is, which made it well enjoyable for me knowing spicy food can be a problem. To go with eat I had Es Markisa Kelapa Muda, a passion fruit drink with chia seeds and young coconut meat, ideal with people with a sweet tooth And as a dessert I had Kolak, which is made of banana, pumpkin, sweet potato, palm sugar and coconut milk, and is warm Students get 10% discount, a nice, and rare, thought Staff, starting by the cook, is well friendly Yummy food, lots of choice, friendly staff Definitely recommended!

This is one of my go to restuarants near where I work. The food is sensational. Beef rendang is SO GOOD! So, too is everything else.

Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
