Al Cavallino is very much a locals' place, and all the better for it. The taglieri (cold cuts of cow, goose, goat or pig) are carefully selected and well worth starting with. I took a goat meat plate from 'Wolf' [a producer from up in...the mountains] with pear and smoked ricotta and it was very good indeed. Of course, you come here for the Frico... and here they serve it every which way but with ice-cream. Great quality, with tasty polenta on the side. Wines were very good value and service was friendly. If you're nearby and in need of something homely and satisfying, you can't go wrong coming here.More

We received the information about La Fricheria by one friend’s word of mouth. In fact the menu offers a wide selection of unknown frico variety such as honey, ham, pears and so on(you can read it from the attached menu picture). The owner’s philosophy includes:...short supply chain, biological raw materials, personal relationships with the suppliers, artisanal raw materials (cheese and bier as an example) and... time to work in kitchen to properly cook the perfect frico. Consider a little additional waiting time and you will be very satisfied by the results. Enjoy!More

This restaurant was located near our B&B. We wanted something other than pizza and the reviews were good on tripadvisor, plus our host suggested the frico. There were only a couple of people in the restaurant. The menu is in Italian and the owners speak...very little English. We ordered a meat dish, frico, and pasta. The meat dish turned out to be a hamburger with polenta. The burger didn't have a lot of flavor and it was overcooked. The polenta cakes were plain. The pasta had tomato sauce and hamburger meat. Like the polenta, there wasn't a lot of seasoning in the dish. We ordered the original frico, which is similar to a cheese quiche. It wasn't very exciting. The best part of the meal, dessert. We had a yummy fried ice cream cake. It was incredible. Service was slow, which is typical in Italy. This is a family restaurant in which one feels like they are eating in the home of someone who knows how to cook, but only simple dishes.More

We were quite in despair, looking for a pizzeria, lost in the area...and then we found this little simple trattoria. We had a perfect dinner, with excellent wine and a top class frico. The variety of frico they offer is incredible and the products all...come from Friuli. We will be back soon!More

I have eaten in this small family-run outfit a few times, and every time i am amazed by the food ! the owner is very serious about the quality of their food, and he must have chose his suppliers with utmost care. "frico" one if...the regional specialities, a cake of food and potatoes served with a choice of different flavorings, is usually quite "heavy" to digest, nit so at this restaurant, where while it has a real wholesome flavor, it is also very light ! excellent are also the fagottini, pasta dumplings filled with cheese and pears, or the taglionini di canapa. the beers, mostly local brews, are all excellent, and so are the wines offered, the selection is not huge, but quality is always excellent. this is a small restaurant where all is well cared for, and it is certainly one of the very best places to eat in Friuli.More

We arrived shortly before afternoon opening but weregreated poltely by the owner who was glad to prepare frico for us for which we came. There is a largo selection of frico types. We selected two and they were as we were told to expect. Frico...is not a light dish but prepared like at this place is always the reason to come back.More

The symbol of Friuli's traditional food is Frico and this restaurant claims to be specialized in cooking this food. It offers a great variety of Frico. However, the quality is scarce and far from the traditional one. Just for tourists that do not know the...taste of tradition.More

Maybe it is not the best frico in the universe, but they have any possible variety of it. The wine is good, the price more than affordable, excellent cheese and very friendly staff.

We stopped here on the basis of TripAdvisor recommendations. It was a good choice. The ham appetizer was the best we had in the entire Fruili region. Really good. The Frico was OK but not my favorite choice. My wife had pork cutlets which were...really good.More

Every now and then, during my travelling around the world, I happen to meet some places which, in total humility, with just passion and love for quality, are able to prepare simple, good, honest food. The Cavallino is such a place. I had a free...day in Udine and decided to visit Aquilei, an amazing place full of Roman ruins. Looking for a place to eat, I searched in TA and read about the cavallino. All the 5 comments were in Italian, and it was evident that at least 3 came from friends or acquaintances of the owner, something I do not like. But I was puzzled by the fact that they were talking about a dish, the "frico", which I never heard of. And as it was right on my way back from Aquileia, I decided to stop. It was a good idea. The place, like it is stated in one of the previous visitors' comments, look, from the outside, like "a railroad workers afterwork messroom"..... Inside, it is a little bit better, with a fireplace which, given the cold weather outside, was fully functional. The owner was nice and helpful to explain to us what the frico was: a mix of local cheese and potatoes, which can then be mixed with ingredients such as ham, or figs, or mushrooms, or rosemary, and so on. We tried mushrooms and rosemary, and they were really nice. I mean, it is not Alain Ducasse or Pierre Gagnaire: it is honest, good quality, very local Italian food. I had also some local culatello with ricotta cheese and pears, and a veal cutlet with cheese. Local hams, local meet, all selected by the owner, and it was simple and good. If you pass by, do stop and enjoy. Places like this one will not be able to survive much longer: as the owner explained me, the high taxes which my non intelligently managed country applies on small private enterprises (up to 70% of profits), coupled with the location (very close to the main road to Aquileia, which is one of the gems of Italy but which is mainly visited during the summer season) and thus the sometimes low number of visitors, made him difficult to survive. I wish him the best. By the way, the frico (and all the food we had there) was digested very quickly, a clear sign of excellent ingredients. I am happy I took a couple of fricos back home.... I paid 20 euro per person, with local wine.More
