I have to admit, one of Icelandic treats not every one would enjoy. I mean the mixed desert/meal which is sweet flatbread with a slice of salty lam leg, plus smoked trout with cottage cheese on rye bread. The smoke used was still strong and you could taste it too. Very odd but an interesting experience.
This is served with crumbled rye bread ice cream topped up with whipped cream - sweet experience loved by Icelanders.
I didn't have opportunity to taste the wide menu, you may like to try but i think this is their speciality, I mean traditional Icelandic food and treats like fermented shark, the thing for the brave. :)
The restaurant it self doesn't feel or look up-market, it is rather mid-range. But what makes it truly worth a visit is a massive whole wall painting on the first floor. Absolutely unique, depicting a story of ancient Gods, Loki is one of them.

I visited Cafe Loki 6 years ago and wasn't sure what to make of it, however I revisited it with a food tour during a subsequent trip to Reykjavik and loved it so much that I returned for lunch the following day! I can recommend the Loki plate (without the shark) and the rye bread ice cream with the rhubarb syrup. It sounds strange but tastes absolutely amazing.
I went at lunchtime and there was a steady stream of people visiting and the atmosphere was pleasant.

This is near the church so has good views - particularly from upstairs. The menu offers traditional Icelandic food. We opted for a Loki platter which had smoked lamb, smoked trout, geyser bread, fermented shark (you have to try it once) and dried fish (you have to try it once). We also tried the trout "cake" which was layers of trout and bread covered in a sour cream coating. The side salad was crunchy and fresh and it came with a serve of the bread icecream.

A place to try ‘local food’, although I’ve heard that the local delicacies they advertised such as shark, puffin and whale are more for tourism now, and not what today’s locals eat. This cafe is Ideally situated next to the main church, with simple honest cafe decor, the second floor gives you a better view. The menu compromise of a lot of fish so the environment smells a little of this, I tried a Icelandic platter, which came with an ice cream pot next to fish dishes, all nice and fresh with different local tastes to try. My partner had the lamb shank but shared that the meat wasn’t that tender. It wasn’t the cheapest even in Icelandic measures either, coming to around 55 GBP for 2 meals and drinks.

My husband and I stopped in here to try some of the classic Icelandic food. The workers were very friendly and came over right away. My husband ordered the platter that included the fermented shark, dried fish, and mashed fish. It's something you need to try even if you're not that into it. I ordered a stuffed fish that was excellent.

I read lots of reviews before going to Reykjavík, and I knew I had to visit Cafe Loki! The food is reasonably priced and DELICIOUS! The rye bread was superb, and almost cake-like. On the first visit I had the Baldur plate. I loved all of it! My sister had the meat soup, also highly recommended! We found a 10% coupon in the yellow city guidebook and went back for a snack another day. It was a reasonably-priced place to try fermented shark (and I appreciate the staff for being honest that many people don’t like it), and I rewarded my bravery with coffee and more of that yummy rye bread ice cream. The staff is friendly, and the view of Hallgrimskirkja church was a delight.

Friendly staff, fast service, tasty food. Great opportunity to try Icelandic dishes, staff advise how best to eat the fermented shark, the brennivin schnapps helps it to go down! Sells local rye bread ice cream too. Excellent selection of coffees. Picturesque location, decor achieves hygge. Will return when next in Iceland.

Pancakes filled with Skyr yogurt and topped with caramel... I'm getting hungry just thinking back to the breakfast I enjoyed at Cafe Loki last week. The staff were very friendly and the view of the church was great. The prices were more than reasonable by Icelandic standards so I would 100% recommend Cafe Loki to anyone in Reykjavik.

Cosy little cafe opposite the cathedral I had smoked trout and cottage cheese on rye bread. The bread is sweet and cakey, the trout fresh and tasty. Really liked it.
You could have had fermented shark....I declined!!

Grabbed a quick bite to eat here before heading out to the wild lands for the day and was sadly a little disappointed. Staff seemed surly and inattentive and I wish I’d gone for the smoked trout bagel because the flatbread tasted burnt and was cold. The Swiss mocha coffee was also very bitter, but as no one asked how everything was, we couldn’t raise this with anyone. Much preferred the bakery Sandholt instead.

This was an adorable little spot with beautiful views! We had some difficulty making a reservation for two people online but the waitresses were very easy to work with. It took some time to be served but that wasn't a major issue for us. The food itself was a great value and provided an excellent selection of Icelandic delicacies all in one place along with options for a vegan. I would highly recommend this for an adventurous eater.

Before I came to Iceland I noticed this quirky little cafe on Trip Advisor located in the centre of Reykjavik and with a great view of the cathedral.
Luckily my wife and I were able to get a table for a delicious lunch of genuine Icelandic food.
My wife had a bowl of meat soup with pieces of lamb in a broth of root vegetables. I tried the Freya plate with smoked trout on rye bread and salad. To finish we shared one of their unusual rye bread ice creams. The entire meal was delicious and I was pleased to be able to compliment the staff on their hospitality.

Cafe Loki is very much worth a trip to try traditional Icelandic dishes. I tried the 'Icelandic plate Loki' which had some great flavours.
Plokkfiskur, the mashed fish and potato in a white sauce, I'll definitely go for the full version next time I see it on a menu. The smoked trout served on the yummiest homemade rye bread. Hangikjot, the delicious smoked lamb, very tasty, the best smoked meat I've tried, I wonder if IKEA serve it :-) And .... just a taste of fermented shark, with a shot of Brennivín. It tasted like a bleached, ammonia wad, utterly disgusting, but had to try it. Brennivin was fine, but then I do like fennel and aniseed. The pudding was good, a sort of oatey, creamy ice cream
The service was very pleasant. The location is opposite Hallsgrimkirkja, if you walk by the first open door where the outside tables are, and walk down the side street to the restaurant, there's a door leading to the upstairs where there's more room, and the windows are open for fresh air.

We ended up going here as it was the only place opened at 9.40 that still served food for dinner. We had a smoke trout cake (sandwitch) and it was very good. It is central location, but I would not say that it is must visit (as the commertials on icelanair suggest).

We had breakfast in Cafe Loki twice. They serve meals all day, but since it was near to the guest house where we stayed, this was a nice option for is for breakfast. The coffee was seriously good and nicely made. In terms of food they had some real strange (in a good way) items on the menu, but we just had bagels and pancakes (yummy!). The service was quick and friendly, the prices acceptable. The interior design nothing very special, but still a cosy place. Recommended.
