Generous helpings of tasty food and wine served by charmingly friendly people.
Off the main food streets in a side road, its principal attraction when we went there today was that it was in the sun and out of the bitingly cold wind. But kindly and efficient service quickly guided us to the english-language pages of the menu and brought our starter order of fish soup. One of the most deliciously different fish soups I've had, made with bream and vegetables.
The main course espetada, served with salad and french fries, was exceptionally generous and tasty fillet of beef.
Along with glasses of dry Madeira wine, the whole bill only came to €50 when I added in a generous tip.
We enjoyed chatting with the waiter and waitress, whose English was excellent, and the whole lunchtime experience was elevated from a quick warming snack stop in the sun to a memorable occasion.

Main dish was great well prepared, but their traditional bread is probably the worst we had and the same goes for desserts. Service is great as well, but make sure they bring everything you order. The most annoying thing was the local band, which played like one song and came over to ask for money. I am not against supporting local artists, but this was very invasive as they expected you pay them even if you did not like the music.

This place is slightly hidden up a side street in the old town, away from the bustle of the main street, with a nice view in both directions up towards the mountains and down to the sea. There was also a gentle breeze which made for a pleasant environment compared to the main street which was quite warm and busy.
We noted a few locals dining here which is normally a good indicator of authentic and high quality food compared to some of the more touristic restaurants, and we were not disappointed.
We tried the limpets and the mixed grilled fish, which were both beautifully prepared and super fresh.
Their deserts are all homemade, we chose a tiramisu and a chocolate mousse, of which both were served generously and were delicious.
Everything was priced reasonably, representing very good value for the quality of dining experience.
The staff are friendly and attentive, happy to chat and joke with you.
Overall, a perfect dinner, highly recommended.

I think we had every member of staff come to the table at some point so it was difficult to know who was serving us. Two different staff struggled to tell us what was on the dessert menu and after finally ordering another waiter came and asked for our dessert order and we obviously explained we had ordered. 20 minutes later after chasing two staff the cheesecakes which clearly just needed plating arrived.
When the bill came there was water and a half bottle of something on the bill which we hadn't ordered so we pointed this out to the waitress. After 20 minutes and chasing for the bill it arrived still with the bottle of water on. I went to take the bill back inside and another waiter brought the "correct" bill and I had to point out that the water was still on the bill! Not one of the staff apologised and we left furious having wasted almost an hour sat waiting for dessert and the bill by that point.
We had octopus and limpets to start and unfortunately the limpets were overcooked and the worst we had during our holiday after ordering them at a few restaurants.
I had a prawn and squid skewer for a main which came with some side veg which whilst enjoyable was €17 euros and I thought was over-priced for the portion.
With a couple of beers the meal came to €70. The evening before we ate at Là ao Fundo, had two bottles of wine and 4 courses for €100 and both the food and service were excellent.
We had also had a very similar local menu another night at Taberna Ruel for the same price and again the service and food were great in comparison. So this meal was really poor value for money and I would avoid this restaurant.
If you read other reviews the owners seem to copy and paste the the same reply about customers not feeding back at the time but clearly in our case we did, including about the limpets to the waitress.

The restaurant is situated in a small alley in easy working distance to the Centre.
Tables on the street. Corona distance is ensured. Tables will be cleaned carefully.
Now to the major: the dinner.
Some choices can be make from the English menu. Not to many that makes it easier to decide. Also some recommendations are given. We choose Lapaz as starters with garlic bread. And steak from Tuna as Main dishes. All was fresh prepared and we were often asked if we are satisfied with it.
Summary: yes! Also fast and friendly service.
Go ahead!

Huge Disappointment. Unfortunately, we had a pretty bad experience on New Years Eve. Luckily, this was the only negative dining experience of our whole trip.
Our "starter" bolo do caco breads were "raw"/unheated, i.e. had in them cold butter heaped in a huge clump. (A staff member seemed shocked and apologised many times, however, no replacement was offered). Service was extremely slow. We waited well over an hour and a half for the main course (max eating time 2 hrs 15 min before next seating, and had to leave the restaurant practically mid-dessert.) Our table was lacking an assigned waiter/ess (one said that had been up since 6 and was and looked tired, which I feel sorry for), and it seems our table had been practically, for the most part forgotten, which could explain why our food came so late (?) Quality-wise the 3-course meal was comparatively overpriced even for a special occassion; e.g. vegetables were overcooked, though the flavour was acceptable; as mentioned earlier, the bread was unheated/"raw". Let's put it this way: all other seven Funchal restaurants (regardless of the price) we dined at provided a way better level of food and service. All in all, I am pretty sure we will not be visiting NoitEscura again.

The restaurant is located in an alleyway of popular Santa Maria street, in the centre of Funchal. The service was friendly and attentive and the food fresh and tasty, with a homemade feel. The lapas (roasted limpets) were fantastic and the seafood rice was well made and the portion was very generous.

Super attentive and when I asked about portion sizes (I eat one meal a day so will often have 2 main courses) the waiter suggested a gigantic steak which wasn't actually on the menu. This was cooked really perfectly and was great quality meat. I also had some excellent parrotfish. Some really interesting things on the menu that I will return to try

Really pleasant experience, nice food and really friendly staff. Fresh fish cooked really well and a good selection of meats and other local specialities. Sat outside tucked off the main pathway with views in one direction to the mountains and the opposite to the sea. Seafood platter with King Prawns was good value at €49 (for 2)

NoitEscura is up a side street away from the tourist alley of the old town and well worth seeking out. The market fresh tuna belly in the display cabinet hooked us in and we weren't disappointed. The staff were great, joining in with the banter between us and two other English couples who were seated near us. For EUR 30 we had enough tuna belly to feed a family of four but it was excellent and none got left behind. We washed it down with a bottle of local wine which wasn't bad.
Overall an excellent meal at a reasonable price.

We wanted to avoid eating down the narrow cobbled street where a person is stood outside every restaurant trying to get you in. NoitEscura is down a quiet side street. The waiter saw us pondering outside and came over to ask if we'd like to see the menu. He handed it to us then left us. We liked that. We were shown to a table. Our starters of garlic prawns and bolo do caco were great. For mains I wanted the tuna steak from the menu. They only had a big piece charged at €38 per kilo. It was very good with boiled spuds and veg. Hubby was pleased with his espetada, chips and salad. The wine was more reasonably priced than some other restaurants at €13.50 and was very good. The bill came to €61.25.
We had a lovely evening here, the staff and service were excellent and food very good. There were mostly Portuguese customers here too I think.

Excellent food and service, just off from the main drag so peaceful while still in touch with it. The tapas starters were delicious but the fresh fish main for two was superb. Our daughter had the fillet beef skewers which were cooked to perfection, rare as she likes it. Portions more than adequate. The service was attentive, polite and friendly. Reasonably priced, will definitely go back.

Dear Stevejersey2,
Many thanks for your visit, preference, and for taking a little of your time to evaluate and recommend our restaurant, where you will always be very welcome!
True, our location is not on the Main Street, but we work with what we have and do our best to tell you where we are. On the positive side, this location allows us to have a quieter environment than in the busy street of Santa Maria, complemented by our large dining room.
We hope to have the honor to welcome you soon!
Greetings

Great friendly staff who really tried hard for our first evening in Madeira
The food was ‘interesting’ and not to my palate but it was great to try it and try to local bread for the first time
As they say with the scabbard fish its better to taste it before you see it. But it is still an acquired taste.
Everyone was polite, helpful and speak excellent English. Food is prepared to order, so a slight wait but the chef creates perfect seasoning and balanced meals with large portions so consider sharing

We had very good beef skewers with really fresh laurel skewers. It came with fresh sallad and fries.
We got a nice selection of cheese for starter.
Nice to sitt in the street - not so much people passing by.

Have visited this restaurant twice in 3 days! Situated in a quiet street in an old part of town. Not a huge menu, but lots to choose from & all cooked beautifully. I had the best rare fillet steak I've ever had, cooked to perfection & so tender, served with roquefort & sauce. Lots of fresh fish on offer. Staff are very attentive & friendly. No doubt we'll go back before we leave!!
