We went to this restaurant after searching for good pasta dishes in Funchal. We picked it as it was near our hotel and had great reviews (also because it was one of the few places with nice looking table cloths and it looked joyful). We were so impressed with not only the taste of the food, but also the presentation and value. We had a great set menu and would happily go back again.
We also had a delightful waiter who was so keen to impress and give us really helpful recommendations.
Although a simple looking restaurant, the food was magnificent!
I’d really recommend the lemon meringue tart as it was a perfect finish to the meal.

What a gem! We visited on the strength of recent positive reviews and could not agree more. We decided to try the set menu at the remarkable price of €14.90, not expecting the feast that followed! Poncha, tomato and onion soup, meat or fish main with sweet potatoes and salad, homemade ice cream, coffee and Madeira. Everything was homemade, fresh and tasty - the ice cream was even made in front of us! The standard of service was excellent too. A tiny family bistro, highly recommended.

Fabulous for a smaller or bigger hunger. The soups (authentic French onion or delicious tomato) as starters or a main course. The dish of the day always a surprise from French coq au vin to spagetti bolognaise at an unbeatable price of 5,50€! Having said that, anything on the menu is mouthwatering, fresh produce, at a very good price quality ratio. In fact, Philippe’s (the owner) tuna steak is my favorite in Funchal! Great food is always accompanied by super friendly service by the rest of the team, Nikita (sweet as sugar) and Benjamin. And you cannot skip the icing of the cake - the ICE ROLLS 😋 You get to order your own favorite. Ours is caramel-passion fruit. The restaurant is so easy to find; on the main street in front of the Pestana Casino hotel. Hence the only downside of the place, since perfection doesnt exist, is the sometimes noisy street traffic. No wonder Le Bistrot Jacaranda has so many regular clients. Well worth a visit next time you hungry.

On our last stay in Madeira fifteen months ago we had been very impressed with the Jacaranda but were far less so on our return even though the chef and the waiter were the same. Again we had the Madeiran menu. The tomato and onion soup was ok but the main courses of fish and steak were mediocre. Our coffees came without the glass of Madeira promised on the menu but it felt a bit petty to make too much fuss about it. It was fairly cheap but I would not bother to return.

Thank you for taking your time to write a review.
As written in our menu, the Madeiran 14,90€ offer includes a poncha, a tomato and onion soup, either a scabbard fish or a beef on a skewer for the main course, a dessert and a "cafe cortado", which is an expresso with a drop of madeira wine in it.
We are baffled as of where the idea of it including a glass of Madeira wine comes from.
Regarding the main course not meeting your satisfaction, I do not recall you informing me or any other member of the staff about it. One thing we can guarantee is that both were fresh and grilled on demand.
Thank you for your time.

Had a lovely meal here tonight. we took the option of the €15,90 menu of Tastes of Madeira . 5 courses with a great selection of tastes all freshly made by the French chef who speaks very little English. The waiter is helpful, multilingual, expressive and knows his wines. We sat inside today because of the rain , chique bistro environment , just a few tables with a little space in-between. Covid Care YES. a bottle of sanitiser on each table. We will probably revisit for a full course meal shortly with high expectations. This is the same review I've put on google, however I would echo the comments made below about the quality of the foods , the cost effectiveness of the meal and total respect for the chef.

We especially enjoyed the Estipada ( marinated beef which fell off the skewer) and we were entranced by Nicky who looked after us very well indeed, and was very entertaining. Next time we will save room for his home made icecream and specially mixed cocktails….thank you! Great food and excellent value.

We first visited this little place in October 2021. We were looking for somewhere to eat after a long day out walking and decided to go to this restaurant as it was across the road from our hotel. Very pleasantly surprised to see Nicky still waiting on tables there, we received a warm welcome back. These is an extensive menu offering everything from Madeiran and Portuguese food to pastas and salads. We visited twice during our trip this time, both times we opted for the Menu of the Day. The menus if the day is usually a soup to start, our was creamy tomato with a boiled egg in the middle which was filling and delicious. The main I had was Espada or scabbard fish with vegetables, my husbands had beef skewer, the desserts we had were fresh hand made ice cream and we also had a chocolate cake, you also get a coffee laced with Madeira wine or sometimes a poncha. The cost was around 16 Euros per person for the menu of the day. Delicious Portuguese wines available. A very nice little restaurant offering good food at a reasonable price.

We visited Bistro Jacaranda 3 times during our week stay in Madeira. This little restaurant was excellent value for money and the food was very well cooked and delicious. Local specialities on the menu included Espada (scabbard fish) and a lovely beef skewer, both dishes were superb and beautifully presented. Really good wine at a reasonable price. We opted for the menus of the day, there are various on offer and all include little extras like a coffee with Madeira Wine. The staff were all lovely too, attentive without being too much. Give them a try.

We eat at Jacaranda once a week while on holiday in Madeira and last night was our first visit. Phillippe, the French owner and chef excelled himself and the food was superb. The beef in the stir fry was plentiful and tender, the tuna and king prawns in the Royal Platter enormous and superbly cooked as was the octopus with rice. Nicky, the waiter, was his usual amusing self chatting to the clients. The highlight of the evening was the choice of ice cream prepared to order. The girls had Baileys and the boys rum and raisin. However, Nicky didn’t have any raisins so we had rum and chopped grapes. Not, I have to say the greatest success. The rum was plentiful but was, according to Nicky, a perfect antifreeze😂😂😂.
A great evening enjoyed by all and we shall be returning next week with our family.

In my search for something different, I found Jacaranda.
I was introduced to the menu by the lovely, very attentive staff. I highly recommend their salads and Onglet steak. I was truly impressed by the quality of the meat and the sauce. The waiters are also very professional and competent, showing great patience despite my innumerable questions.
Very true to their slogan.

This was our second choice of restaurant as the Pizzeria we had intended visiting was closed for the evening.
However it was very much to our advantage as we had an excellent meal, hubby choosing the succulent grilled prawns with salad and sautéed potatoes and I had grilled chicken breast with salad and sautéed potatoes which were cooked to perfection.
An exceptional meal at a very reasonable price.

We visited the Jacaranda on our first evening and on several subsequent occasions, having read TA reviews and were delighted. Following recommendations we tried the Madeiran set menu at €15: Poncha, soup, a choice of espada or Madeiran skewered beef, dessert, coffee and glass of Madeira. Excellent food, value, service and relaxed atmosphere. Nikki and Benjamin were so welcoming and professional, as was the chef-patron. Many thanks.

Food was delicious and you couldn’t fault the value for money. We have a selection of dishes (including the Madeiran fixed menu) and apart from some items being altered they were very nice. Didn’t appreciate the overly dramatic performance of the server. It was painful and sometimes very annoying.

Believe it or not, this was my favorite meal so far in Madeira (day 6), after having eaten at 8 other restaurants, including 2 Michelin starred ones! We walked here from our nearby hotel and it was relatively quiet at 7:30 pm. Ambiance is very casual (definitely not elegant or romantic) and the space inside is rather tiny but the French chef really does a great job with the food! We ordered the Royal Fish combo (grilled black scabbard fish, tuna steak, and prawns) which came with sides of Asian style stir-fried vegetables and roasted potatoes and an order of Menu de Madeira, a set menu which included a glass of poncha, Madeira tomato, onion and egg soup, choice of black scabbard fish or skewered beef entree with sides of sweet potato and salad. The set menu finished with home made ice cream - ours was freshly made passion fruit ice cream (so refreshing and not too sweet!). The portions were huge and very tasty. Servers were very friendly and prompt. And the price cannot be beat. So reasonable for great food. We will definitely return before we leave!
