Special occasion birthday celebration and so glad it was here this was the best meal and service we had in Funchal and we had lots of good meals with good service but Cris’s is a clear winner 10/10 on welcome, presentation of fabulous food, service and professionalism. We also had the complimentary pick up from our hotel which was a bonus. The table was clearly set to acknowledge my birthday and my dessert plate also presented with birthday wishes all these little touches make for a wonderful experience. Will most definitely revisit if in Funchal in the future and the Concept menu is fabulous @ €40 per person and including your wine it is well worth it and I would absolutely recommend it. Goats cheese creme brûlée, sea bass, chocolate trilogy and Portuguese wine what more could you ask for !!

I've been to Madeira many times now and Cris's (his original retaurant by the Lido) has always been my favourite restaurant in Madeira.
We went to Cris's place (first time I'd been to this one) for NYE dinner, not cheap at 100 euros per person but was worth it. The food, as always, was excellent, the singer that was performing was very good and made it a lovely atmosphere and the service was good also. The only small criticism I could add is that the delivery of the food was a little rushed (very unusual for Cris's as its normally served at the perfect pace)
We went to Cris's original restaurant by the Lido on our last night in Madeira. The concept menu is such great value at 40 euros per person as it includes all your wine. Both food and wine all top class and with the guy playing the clarinet in the back ground it made for a perfect evening.
Cris's is still my favourite restaurant on the island and when you consider the fact that there are so many fantastic places to eat there, it's quite an achievement.

We do understand your small criticism regarding our 'little rushed' service pace. Christmas Eve and New Years eve we work with a special fix menu that normally is a 5-6 course meal. It's a long meal and for those days most of the guests arrives at the same time and we need to be faster in order to finish in time because on those days we need to finish before midnight. Since it's a longer meal we've to speed up the process.
In the other hand, you know that in a normal night we do our best to serve everybody in perfect pace.

For 40 euros each we had a superb 3 course meal with coffee and a different wine with each course starting with a glass of sparkling as soon as you sit down. Food was very good and the place was almost full giving a great atmosphere. Service was good and efficient.
Unless you are staying in the area it is best to use the restaurants free pick up and return service as it would be difficult to find especially in the dark.
We will definitely revisit when back in Madeira.

We have visited this restaurant previously (not on a music night) after it relocated further up the hill. The plus points are as follows:
Beautiful décor and a good value menu for 40 euros including wines, water, and coffee with good choices of menu.
The food overall is a good high standard and innovative .
However we visited on a Saturday night when Robin Hird (brilliant guitarist) and his equally good violinist Andrei were performing .Whilst the leaflet detailing the music event asked for diners to respect diners listening to the music, unless you were seated close to the performers ,the level of chat and conversation drowned out the music. The owner Chris was walking around the tables filling wine and water glasses and dealing with the flambé desserts and chatting away noisily to obviously returning and known guests but did not appear to engage with any new customers including ourselves
Service was slow -maybe staff were unaware of their roles at each table as Chris was doing some of the tables?
We had to ask for our glass of madeira (included in the menu) and I believe our refill of red wine was "corked" Nobody asked if the wine was ok although we told the staff member at the end of the meal.
If you want to see these musicians and indeed hear them go to one of their concerts in the gardens of the English Church.(check out the website) They do separate classical, Beatles concerts throughout the week and a brilliant interpretation of rock songs on a Friday evening at 6pm .

Every saturday, we're having live music with Robin as guitarist and Andrei as violionist, yes indeed it says on the leaflet to keep a relaxed environment for everyone, on those days we're having a fully booked restaurant and there's nothing we can do to control the noise within the restaurant, it's in your side.
Every member of the staff was very aware of their roles in each table, Cris wasn't "doing SOME of the tables", he was serving the drinks and wines that night in EVERY table, by that I mean he was very busy and didn't have time to talk to each guest like he normally does, unfortunately. Cris was not ignoring any of the guests, anyways we apologize for the things you've stated.
Regarding your wine, you were drinking the house wine included in your special concept as 90% of the other guests did and no one let us know the wine could be corked(rarely happens but can happen in one of the bottles). We smell every bottle we serve and it seemed okay but I do believe the taste wasn't. it would be an easy fix if you let any of us know during your meal and we'd replace it. You did let us know that the wine was not okay in the end of the night after paying the bill, what could we do?
If a guest is looking for a more relaxing dining experience, I'd recommend to come any other day without a live music.

We had dinner here last night and it was a really delightful experience. Although the three course deal looked great value we struggle to cope with three courses these days so opted for a main course and dessert. The waiter gave excellent advice about the choice of wine to go with our main courses of parrot fish and salmon. Both beautifully cooked with a selection of vegetables. For dessert we opted for a creme brûlée and a pannacotta. Booth delicious especially the brûlée which was flamed at the table. The service was exemplary all evening.

We were a party of 7 dining yesterday evening.We had a free shuttle transfer from our hotel and return.
The meal was exceptional. We chose from a range of dishes and the menu has something for everyone including vegetarians. The 40 euro menu included all wines and is very good choice as selection is from the full menu, (as opposed to being a seperate fixed menu)
The service was excellent with friendly,efficient knowledgeable staff.
A real treat.

Set menu with wine pairing is superb. Choice of dishes is extensive, all served with quality wine at the very reasonable price of 40 euros per head. Service is outstanding and surroundings luxurious. A relaxing atmosphere ensures the whole experience makes for a very pleasant evening. Would highly recommend.

A lovely elegant restaurant with chandeliers and good decor.
Concept Menu at 40£ is good value and includes 3 courses with plenty choices, bread , wines and water.
Food was ,in general, well cooked and presented.
Starters of prawn cocktail and tuna ceviche were excellent as were the desserts of caramel cheesecake and brownie stuffed with pistachio cream served with chocolate mousse and blackberries.
Sadly the main courses were less impressive.
Salmon with saffron risotto was overcooked while fillet of veal which was requested medium was raw and thus inedible.
The latter dish was recooked and tasted well although it was a bit tough.
The Maitre D’ ,Victor, was very professional and made a deduction from our bill to take account of the improperly cooked main dishes.
Wines were okay as was a decent Madeira at the end of our meal.
We will certainly return in the hope that more precision applies to the cooking of the main courses.

Booked on line. We were welcomed and given an excellent table where we could observe the world as it passed.
The food was excellent, with a great choice and reasonably priced.
The fixed menu with wine looked good value but we went off piste and were pleasantly surprised with both presentation and choice. The food was really fresh and tasty. The service was attentive and there was no pressure to order or leave. We had a memorable evening and would certainly return (and recommend)

Cris's place is slightly out of town in a small parade of shops but after eating there for the first time we immediately re-booked for the following week. They have a special concept menu which allows you to choose any starter, main and dessert for a set price (I think around €40) and also includes wine for each course. The standard of food was really excellent, portions a sensible (ie, not the standard Madeiran huge plateful) size and the service is great too.
Worth booking for a live music night, a talented duo plays jazz guitar and violin, but you do need to book in advance, it was absolutely full whilst we were there.
Highly recommended.

Our waistlines allowed only one visit unfortunately.We chose the set 3 course menu for 40E including drinks.
The evening did not off to a good start when we left waiting by the front door for much too long. However after that it was brilliant, certainly fine dining. with themed plates etc.
The meal started with a glass of champagne and the we had a different wine with each course and we not limited tio just one glass they kept coming back to refill.
The mail was superb and we would have visited again but we we wanted to keep it as special place for our next visit to Madeira

Regarding "waiting by the front door for much too long", that's not our standards. As soon as we see a guest on the door or even before arriving a waiter welcomes you. I can guarantee that at Cris's Place nobody waits for too long unless some serious situation happens that require us to give some kind of support. Other than that, nobody waits at the door for "much too long". I'd believe it could happen to wait 1 or 2 minutes which is not "too long" as you wrote but more than that, it never happened and nobody have waited 5-10 minutes infront of our door.

During a week's stay in Funchal we visited Chris' Place for dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday. A friend had recommended the sister restaurant Cris's, but this one was just a short walk from our hotel.
After a pre-dinner drink outside on the balcony, we sat inside for dinner. The restaurant offers a comprehensive menu of quality cooking and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The staff were excellent and well trained and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. Overall we would thoroughly recommend for a special meal and the prices were very reasonable.

I can understanf how this restaurant is so highly rated. Ordered the bread and tuna ceviche for starters. Wife ordered grilles fillet and I ordered sea bass two ways. First of all, the service is impeccable, as if you were the King of Medeira. The ceviche while good, needed some acid. The bread was piping hot and delish. The entrees were spectacular. Beef was melt in your mouth and the fish perfectly cooked. The veg with the meal was wonderful. The servers brought out a blue cheese topped cherry tomato plus sorbet on the house during the meal. I highly recommend this superb restaurant.

What find ! My hotel recommended Cris's place and I am. ski pleased we checked it out..
The food is excellent and the value for money is about as good as it gets - The value you get for 45 Euros is crazy, three course, 2 intermediate courses and matching wine ! I wish this restaurant was in the UK, I would move in hahahaha
The service was equal to the quality and value of the food.

We had a fantastic evening meal at Chris’s place.
The food was of very high standard matched with great service.
Highly recommend the fixed price 45€ package that includes any 3 courses from the à la Carte menu plus wine that is kept topped up. This was of comparable standard to gourmet menus and wine flights we have had at high end restaurants.
Well worth a visit and booking recommended .
