One MICHELIN Star: High quality cooking, worth a stop!
Very comfortable restaurant; one of our most delightful places.
About
Simpsons is an informal yet elegant restaurant owned by chef and restaurateur Andreas Antona. The kitchen is overseen by chef director Luke Tipping, whose free-flowing cooking style earnt Simpsons its first Michelin star in 2000, which it has retained ever since. With a deep-rooted respect for ingredients, the menu centres around provenance and seasonal produce. The restaurant is light and airy and has a fully landscaped garden that comes alive in the spring and summer.

While the food was absolutely breathtaking, I felt the service and facilities really came short of my expectations. I sent a private note, explaining the shortfalls of my visit but I received a snotty aggressive phone call from front of house saying I was wrong...and that I shouldn’t be complaining, so I felt compelled to write this review of my experience especially after spending £450.00 for this meal. Upon arrival we were challenged over our booking, asking who we were and how many people etc even though I had pre booked and paid a deposit. It just seemed weird, strange and awkward. We were marched through the restaurant on floors that were really slippery in heels and some of the wood had holes in so I was trying to be careful not to get my heels stuck, but the lady was marching so quickly I could barely catch up. At the table it was on the tiles and the table was wobbly and we had to move it about a few times to get it stable. My husband had the wine paring which were fabulous and the detail from the sommelier was incredible but I had a bottle of Prosecco where my glass was often left empty sometimes my husband was even trying to get their attention to top it up. Then I had to drink faster towards the end of the meal because there was so much left. The toilets were dirty, clearly hadn’t been cleaned or checked with fingerprints all over the doors mirrors and flusher. What seemed like really cheaply fitted soap dispensers and hand dryers. On the way out some of the staff were negotiating with delivery drivers hanging round in the reception area. Then standing in the doorway so I couldn’t even get out of the door.More

Wow what a restaurant. We had visited the restaurant pre covid to enjoy a brilliant day at the cookery school upstairs and since then we have wanted to return. We absolutely loved everything about this meal. So much so we are surprised it doesn’t have...2 Michelin stars. We enjoyed the lunch menu and had all possible extras (caviar, beef main and cheese). Everything was beautifully presented and tasted incredible. The sommelier was very knowledgable and helpful and made great suggestions for our wine pairings. All members of staff wore masks making us feel safe and comfortable in the restaurant. The lunch menu was priced at £55/head which we thought was good value for money. Fantastic food and wonderful staff. We have already booked to come again and cannot wait to bring our families. We will continue to spread the word!More

Visited for lunch with my husband and we both thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our time at Simpsons. I was slightly worried about dress code after reading some reviews. The hubby and I dressed smartly for the occasion, as that’s how we felt comfortable. There...were other diners dressed casually, but still considerate of the environment (no ripped jeans or scruffy clothes). Others choice of dress didn’t impact our enjoyment one bit, and I’m sure the exceptional front of house team would have appropriately dealt with anyone that was really dressed in a way that could damage anyone else’s experience. The service from all of the team was exceptional, faultless really. The team strike exactly the right balance between attentive and allowing the freedom to enjoy the meal. I took the wine flight with my meal. The Sommelier’s knowledge of his chosen wines was fantastic, and we really enjoyed the discussion around his choices, which included wines from unusual locations that I wouldn’t have ordinarily considered but would definitely try again. My husband had stupidly decided to drive which he agreed was an error in judgement after having a taste of a couple of my wines! Lastly the food. As with everything else at Simpsons it was exceptional. The attention to detail was fantastic and the food was stunning visually and in flavour. I have a cooking experience with my daughter on the 18th September and we are definitely looking forward to this after such an enjoyable lunch in August.More

We ate here on our wedding anniversary and enjoyed a very special evening. It is expensive, of course, but the service was impeccable and many of the flavours were wonderful and unique. A memorable dining experience.

having never been to Simpsons I was delighted to be brought here for a surprise birthday lunch. The five course tasting menu was excellent - the Loch Duart salmon, Herefordshire beef and Set Buttermilk were truly memorable. The sommelier made some very helpful and imaginative...suggestions - an Albarino from Uruguay and an Israeli red; both were perfect accompaniments, and reasonably priced. The service was faultless. Highly recommended.More

We visited Simpsons two years ago and came back again for a family lunch. Overall, the food and service quality was worse than before, sadly, this will be our last visit. The service: We ordered the complementary wine which is provided from Wednesday - Friday...but this did not arrive. We were left waiting a long time for the starter and when they brought it, the bread was brought after the other start 'snacks'. The food: The starter was a turnip soup was unusual. It was salty and oily, with a bitter after-taste. Perhaps it is an acquired taste. We ordered the sea bream, chicken and steak. The chicken and sea bream were too salty by a considerable amount. The food was lukewarm, as were the pour-on sauces and the plates were cold. Many of the dishes had several sauces were too salty and did not really match together. The desserts were fine but underwhelming. The last time we visited, we were impressed by the quality of the food, so we left disappointed this time. For a £300 lunch for 4 in a Michelin star, it's fair to expect a higher standard.More

Having had Simpsons on the “to do” list for a while we decided to go for it to celebrate my wife’s birthday Great location being just 5 minutes walk from 5 ways train station. The dining room is a large bright open style conservatory area...overlooking the garden with views in to the kitchen. We went for the Lunch Menu which gave three choices for each course & a glass of wine for £55. There was also a vegetarian option available which my wife had. Starter was Salmon, main was Beef (£15 supplement) & desert Peach Melba - everything was superb & rated as good as it looked. A great experience & one I will definitely repeatMore

We have been fortunate to eat at many fine restaurants around the world and in comparison - Luke Tipping's brigade delivered an absolutely first class experience that was well worth the price. It's always a pleasure to get what you pay for and we left...with big smiles all round. Everything was impeccable from the bespoke cocktail to the affordable wine list to outstanding quality of the food and service..if you are in Brum and want a real treat..go for it..you only live once.More
