4 stars because the food preparation technique was excellent. But, based on this experience, I'm 50/50 as to if I would try again if passing by. This is just my personal option, and obviously based on my palate, but I found both of my dishes...to be overly rich. My dishes would have also benefitted from some brighter/lighter colored ingredients, in terms of presentation. Service from the older lady was perfect, professional with the right balance of friendliness, but I found the younger server to be extremely cold, almost aloof ! The lunch special pricing is more than reasonable for the overall dining experience. I did have an early lunch appointment and with only two other tables occupied, it really did feel 'dead'. Once some other tables were occupied, the atmosphere improved.More

Incredible food and service, thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Champignon Sauvage. Highlights for me were the hake starter and venison main course. The cheese board is also something to witness!

This was our third visit to our favourite UK restaurant. This time we came with friends. The food, service and timing are impeccable. We all enjoyed every course and all the amuse bouches. This is not a place to come to be wowed by smoke...and foam and chefs showing off. Just perfect cooking by a master, served by a master of hospitality.More

Our traditional pre Christmas lunch with friends didn't disappoint. Interesting what people want, I'm of an age when a quiet restaurant where you can talk comfortably is a bonus, but maybe not for everyone who wants their wine glass filled rapidly. Food was very nice...with lovely amuse bouche and the cost reasonable.More

It’s an austere atmosphere.Very few other diners on a Saturday lunchtime. The Romanian greeter was nice but we couldn’t understand her explanations. We all wondered why she was there. No warmth or welcome . We all had the set courses and the food was superb.... We were surprised and pleased that the excellent wine list was not too expensive. We had two bottles of Morgan . It may have been the owner who brought the cheese . It was a brilliant selection and we asked her to choose for us . It was a great choice . We all enjoyed an excellent lunch , high quality food at a reasonable price. We will return .More

Michelin star restaurant that has a quirky cottage industry vibe. Run by a husband and wife team who are truly passionate about their product. The menu is small but very well chosen. Each course was beautifully executed both in flavour and presentation. The decor could...probably do with an update but the food could not be bettered.More

First we came to the restaurant we loved it so much we wanted to come back for a very special occasion. Helen, I’ve emailed you to let you know how let down and disappointed I feel. We went to dine for a 60th birthday celebration...and we had made our reservation having visited the restaurant previously. We travelled two and a half hours to Cheltenham and booked overnight accommodation with the sole purpose of coming to dine. We arrived at 7.15pm and spend 15mins at door (in the rain) waiting for the door to be opened. The restaurant was in darkness and I had to check that I had reserved the correct evening. Our reservation was made for 7.30pm and at no time were we told not to arrive early. The door was unlocked at 7.30pm precisely. Our initial greeting was less than friendly by the waitress. The restaurant was soulless, no ambiance, no music - (which would be fine if the restaurant wasn’t like a morgue!) We were the only two in the restaurant. On checking there were only two other couples booked we were informed the reason being “there was a restriction on diners as the chef was on his own”. I appreciate the awarded Michelin star is for the wonderful food served but the customer overall experience is surely an important aspect. I cannot tell you how very disappointed and let down I feel. We chose to leave as we did not want to spend an evening in a cold, soulless environment with no ambiance or people and a less than friendly greeting - not great for a 60th birthday celebration. I find the lack of reviews over the last few months very odd!!More

The fact that this restaurant has held a Michelin star for 30+ years says it all. Excellent again last night. The two menus on offer were both excellent and reasonably priced when compared to other Michelin star restaurants. I understand what some reviewers say about...the decor/lighting but frankly the food is what this place is about and it delivers. Looking forward to our next visit. In response to one review about the lack of music, thank god for that!More

This remains somewhere that maintains a very high standard of classic-derived modern cooking. Every dish today looked great, tasted great- balanced flavoursome and inviting. Interesting but not weird ingredients. Coffee and petit fours is best value dessert anywhere.

Amazing food. Lovely wine. But...there is no atmosphere. I felt like I was having dinner in a old people's home (actually, that would have been more fun!). No music so enjoy listening to your neighbours conversation.

We had a wonderful lunch to celebrate my birthday. I had wanted to visit for a long while so I had high expectations! However, it was everything I had hoped for. The restaurant is an oasis of calm, with professional and friendly service and wonderful...dining. Every dish was thoughtfully created, the ingredients were top quality, and the dishes were exquisitely presented - no less than you would expect from such a skilled and experienced team - but still appreciated and the experience will be remembered as a very special occasion.More

Our third time at this lovely restaurant, and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent, Helen and the team were welcoming and friendly; the service was excellent - plenty of information, without being intrusive. Very glad that the restaurant is not following the trend...towards tasting menus : contemplating a mouth-watering menu, and making the choice about what we would like to eat, is, for us, an important part of the overall experience of going to a top restaurant. So, thank you once again to all at Le Champignon Sauvage for a lovely evening.More
