Mid-week evening meal

The booking for a midweek evening meal for 2 was made via e-mail conversations, with the owner, and proved to be quick, easy and efficient. It is suggested that no matter when you are going that a reservation is made in advance both to ensure you get a table. The restaurant is easy to find being in the main High West Street, Dorchester, with street and free public car parking (after 6pm) available near-by. The overall atmosphere is that of a simple clean décor, with good lighting, intimate, warm and somewhat open plan with the adequate number of tables effectively spread out (note the book in advance and discuss your requirements with the owner). On arrival we were greeted and shown to our table – the service throughout was very attentive and quite polite, with no rush to order, especially relevant as we were new to Japanese cuisine! We were talked through the food and drinks menu and had each section explained, showing an excellent knowledge of all. This restaurant specialises in fine Japanese food and their menu reflects this with a diverse range of tempura and sushi cuisine, alongside a variety of meat and other dishes that covered something for all tastes. Their drinks menu is similarly diverse and includes Japanese beer, a selection of Sake, Japanese whisky, wines and selection of cocktails. Being new to this cuisine we opted for the Tasting Menu with pairing of different Sake’s (including a ‘sparking’). All dishes were made from scratch, featuring seasonal and local ingredients, where possible and cooked fresh to order. Each course was explained as it came out, well worth the wait as they were good quality and well presented to a high standard (compliments to the chef on this). The Wagyu beef being particularly delicious and melted in the mouth. Though the final bill total was in the higher bracket it was considered good value for money in that it was most definitely “fine dining”. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant and would use it again when visiting Dorchester.

A really special birthday meal!

We visited Myra’s to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We received a warm welcome at the door and after being shown to our table the food and drinks menu were explained to us. We chose the tasting menu as it was a special occasion. It didn’t disappoint! We started with a delicious miso soup, followed by a sushi/sashimi platter. This was followed by a selection of gyoza, a black cod dish and a beef hot plate. All delicious and very generous portions. We both said we couldn’t manage desserts - we were then offered these boxed so we could enjoy at home. They were equally delicious. We enjoyed the plum sake whilst waiting for our taxi home. The tasting menu isn’t cheap but you pay for the quality of ingredients and the combination of the food, service and welcome made for a lovely evening! I’m sure we will be back.

Good food in convivial atmosphere

This is a small family run Japanese restaurant in the centre of Dorchester. The tlsushi was good, well prepared and presented. I was impressed with their Tempura, suitably light and non greasy. All too many restaurants get this disastrously wrong. Tempura prawns particularly good. I was surprised how good the food was compared to other Japanese restaurants in English county towns. Nice saki and short but good wine list fairly priced Not cheap but for good Japanese food you ought to be prepared to pay a sound price, Service was friendly, helpful but non intrusive. Would I return if I visited Dorchester again, yes.

Disappointing

Pros: you are not hurried at all, the service (the girls) were so sweet, the food was ok. Cons: you can’t walk in because the door is locked and has to be opened for you which isn’t very welcoming, the service is only just the right side of slow, the older waiter with the shakey hands points rather too closely at the food to tell you what it is (I thought, if he touches it I’m not eating it!), the food was only ok nothing special and OH MY GOODNESS it is all VERY expensive for what it is. Don’t bother with dessert, they are mass produced not homemade and cost £12 each! We had been looking forward to eating here but because it’s so expensive and only ok, we probably won’t go again. Disappointing.

Conventional wisdom states there is no such thing as a bad review, everyone’s opinion matters in some small way to assist Restaurants in improving the Hospitality experience. There is however always the exception to the rule. Your review failed: From reading the welcome sign on the door, expressing your self on the three occasions during the service when asked for your opinion, inability to recognise a hand made Japanese patisserie cake, being individually rude to staff. In conclusion your out of you depth in so many ways, without the manners to appreciate what a thousand others enjoy.

Not worth the money

I came with a group of friends to celebrate a joint birthday. We were very disappointed by our experience. The prices for main courses and drinks are extortionate and generally not worth the money (£4.50 for a can of San Pellegrino?!). The starters were very nice and quite reasonably priced. Two of the group had salmon for their main course and it was a bit cold and quite small. The price tag of £28.50 for a bit of salmon, rice and broccoli was ridiculous. I could have easily made a more satisfying version at home. To top it all off the two people who had the salmon had upset tummies when they got home. Only one member of the group had a dessert and the candles for the two birthday girls were put in it. Bit weird! We were invited to add an additional tip despite there already being a 12.5% service charge added to the bill, which was very cheeky. When we came to pay, the waiter made a fuss about us wanting to split the bill. All in all, not the best experience and I won’t be rushing back.

Whilst it is unfortunate you write a review stating your disappointments, I would like to point out from where I was sitting there was a lot of laughter, and you stated on departure that you had a good time. The details are by the way. Your opinion matters. Clearly you would have felt more at home somewhere other than a Fine Dining Restaurant.

Above and beyond and beyond again

We visited Myra’s restaurant for the second time yesterday and were once again blown away by the standards of food and service. Every member of staff is polite and keen to offer recommendations when asked, the service is really above and beyond. We eat a lot of Japanese food so to spend these prices we need to be truly impressed and we really were. The sushi is delicate, fresh and delicious and the black cod is one of the best meals I have ever eaten. The biggest downside is that I don’t have a bottomless stomach so that I could eat more of their food!! We already can’t wait to go back.

Chose to come here due to the great reviews online. Unfortunately, our expectations weren’t met. The sushi was ok but the rest of the food was well below average and incredibly over priced. The salmon was dry, sweet and generally tasteless. Chicken and ramen were similar. A pint of beer was £7.50 and was only 3/4 full. £11 cocktail was a glass only half full.. below is a photo before we’d had any! We were then met with a 12.5% service charge on the bill which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. The only positive is that the waitress that served us was lovely.

MYRA’S is about good times, and great experiences. From the start we accommodated you by holding your table for 1 and half hours to remove any stress from a Traffic jam, on a busy evening, when we turned away guests to keep your table secure. Looking at your past TripAdvisor reviews, a trail of drunken encounters etc, clearly you are not enjoying Hospitality. We don’t serve short measures, poor food, our terms of business are clearly marked on all menus. Very sad we didn’t make your evening special…all the other guests enjoyed the hospitality. Myra

10/10 Dining experience

What can I say other than an absolutely amazing meal and dining experience. The waitresses were very attentive and the one of the owners, Paul took his time to explain the menu in great detail. He checked with us that everything was ok whilst we were there and followed up with a phone call the day after to again check all was good with our visit. The presentation of the food was excellent The quality was again excellent. We will undoubtedly return. Thank you to both Paul and Myra Regards Franco and Alison.

Wow amazing food and attention to detail

Wow just Wow. Partner and I love Japanese food and as we live in an area with little or no true japanese food available we usually have to wait until we are staying in London to eat well. Currently having a break in Dorset I found Myras whilst driving around and booked for last night based on reviews. So so glad we took a risk as from service to ambience to the amazing food everything was perfect! Mixed sharing platter to start was so good I could happily eaten it again. The ramen my partner had was delicious and generous whilst my chicken skewers were plentiful and perfectly cooked. If we ever have chance to come this way again I'll be booking again, shame it's a 4.5 hour drive each way!

My wife and I wanted somewhere special to celebrate our 23rd anniversary, after not being able to go out for a couple of years. We chose Myra’s Kaiseki after some recommendations and reading the reviews, and we were not disappointed. Everything was a joy from start to finish - great service from the very friendly and knowledgeable waitress, and every course of the tasting menu was sublime. Yes, it’s not cheap - but you can see why, from the variety and quality of all the ingredients and the exquisite way in which they are prepared. I’ve never been a real fish fan, but after this experience I may just be a convert!

Nice Japanese food in Dorchester

Interesting Japanese restaurant in Dorchester worth a visit. My husband loved his dish of the signature black cod (understand why it's the signature dish) and my Salmon with teriyaki came with caramelised onions that should be bottled and sold! They have a good selection of Saki and at the front of house is the chef's husband who spends time to explain the menus to you. A rare thing in this day and age. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Dorchester.

We came for a belated Christmas meal and were welcomed with excellent service. The owner showed us in himself, and as we ordered spoke through the menu&drinks in such a way that we were all interested yet not over the top. The food was excellent, no complaints. Such a range of different flavours, locally sourced fish and we all very much enjoyed our orders. I couldn’t recommend this place enough- it deserves the title best restaurant in Dorchester.

Family taste experience

Recommend by a few locals for being a truly wonderful taste experience. We opted for the taster menu x 2, whilst the kids had a mixed platter and the chef special ramen. The mixed platter was superb with the vegetable tempura being my favourite, yes I stole theirs. Based on the kids review they loved the ramen but failed to finish them both as there was a lot and stopped them eating ours 😏 All nine course of the taster session were excellent and got better each round with the Dorset crab sushi hitting the mark early on. The sashimi was also quality with that fresh melt in the mouth sensation. The last courses were the black cod in miso which was outstanding and the wagu final dish, which was superb. To add the coffee and sorbet pudding were also super tasty and rounded of a very pleasant evening. The whole evening was a bit expensive but balanced with the level of food, service and knowledge of the chefs made this worth every penny. Was a real treat for me and my family and would come again to try more Japanese delights including the Saki.

Best restaurant ever

My partner and I decided after arriving to order the full tasting menu with all the wine pairings and it was fantastic! I am not the most adventurous eater, but every course was fantastic. The wagyu steak was so good I wanted to cry. The service was 5 star. Everyone was so attentive and the staff brought over little cards with more information about our food and drink. We will be back!

Top tier restaurant!

Firstly, the service from the gentleman was outstanding, it was our first time going there and he explained everything in detail which we really appreciated. Each course was exquisite, my partner had the cod and it even came with a little note about history of the food, the presentation was perfect on all courses. My partner and I eat out all the time and this was by far our NEW favourite restaurant, we would definitely be coming back. When finished we was given a complimentary green tea which was a nice touch too. Thank you to the lady in the kitchen who cooked our dinner tonight, you could tell the love and passion that goes into each dish.
