This place is a complete dive. Smells musty, toilets stink of pee, there's never any toilet roll, and most of the staff don't bother with face masks. The tables are far too close together, covid regulations are not followed at all. Choice of drinks is...dire, some drinks are sold in cans not from a tap and prices are ridiculous. There are far better places to go in Exeter.More

I wanted to specifically thank the ladies working on the England semi-final - two in particular. One was a new starter on the day and incredibly brave to start on a Euro semi-final night! We were her first customers and there was a small spillage,...which she handled like a pro. She and her colleague were super helpful, despite it being incredibly busy. They were both incredibly friendly and so lovely. I know I couldn't keep smiling in such busy conditions - especially on my first day! You're doing incredible jobs ❤️More

I was there for a party in Bierkeller and move. Was absolutley awesome to be able to have both floors. Such a nice large space upstairs but somehow still manages to be cosy!

A warning to all! We visited the almost empty disgusting so called "bierkeller" to find that it is a disaster. There is more atmosphere on the moon than in this dump. Avoid at all costs. It is a stinking dirty hovel with pee on the...toilet floors which is then walked all the way down the stairs into the drinking area. The place is smelly and sticky, and we saw the tail of some type of rodent scurrying behind the bar.... and they sell food!!! The beer was expensive and awful and foul as clearly the pipes were not cleaned, and the band was dire. How can it be German themed when they don't play German music and just think that stupid games make an Oompah night. Has no-one from here been to Germany? Any positive comments on this website are clearly posted by the owners as they all use the same English syntax and words like "Wow". Who uses "Wow" except the owners trying to big up this tiny, disgusting dump of a place?! Avoid this appalling s**thole and don't be as disappointed as we were. We went home and had a shower to get rid of the filth from this place. We shall be reporting this place for hygiene irregularities. AVOID!!!!!!More

I'm a massive fan of Bierkeller, the Maidstone bar is brilliant, the same however can't be said for Exeter's one unfortunately. Firstly the band was in a car accident so couldn't make it, which I appreciate isn't their fault by any means but it just...sets the night off on the wrong foot. Secondly we reserved a table and paid for it, but were a little late by which time they'd given our table away (I repeat, despite paying) which seemed to split the staff, the bar staff said there was nothing they could do whilst the bouncers were surprisingly on our side. Next there was about a half hour wait at the bar after the was an accident and back up staff had to be called in, again, total accident but after the incidents before your sense of humour starts to go by this point. We arrived about 8 by which time the toilets which were already a dive, and, well, I won't be graphic about it, but remnants of people who had too much to drink all over it. That said it didn't really detract from the state of them, they are in desperate need of an update, even a bit of dettol wouldn't go a miss. In fact the whole inside needs updating, the outside is a really nice building, that if decorated properly could be a brilliant pub, but the inside leaves a lot to be desired. In summary, I know Bierkeller can produce a good venue and an even better night because of their Maidstone branch, but this one is severely lacking. Also there's no smoking area, however as you can't really knock down another building just to fit one in there's not a lot you can do about this - it's just for the record.More

Damp, dirty, dingy. Never known a bar to have flies in January. Perhaps they were specially imported as well.

I’m usually an infrequent reader of Trip Advisor, and can’t remember ever having written a review before. However, in the hope that this might help some poor unsuspecting soul avoid having what might well be the worst night of their lives, here goes. The Bierkellar...is dark, dirty and atmosphere-less. The floor is sticky and the toilets are disgusting. The ‘entertainment’ when we went consisted of a roaming microphone, sexist banter and... that was it. The food that was advertised with our ‘Turkey, Tinsel and Oompah’ option was lukewarm and tasteless. I have contacted the management and requested a refund but been told that this isn’t possible, since ‘if you go to the cinema and you don’t like the film you don’t get a refund.’ Good to see folks taking such an interest in customer satisfaction. Do yourself a favour and steer clear.More

This is the 2nd time of visiting in 2 months and the 2nd time we have paid £10 a seat to reserve the seats for a group and £12.50 for a stein of flavoured beer!! Then after 2 hours they come and break the news...the oompah band haven't turned up..m claim they'd been booked in advance but find it hard to believe that everyone in there has experienced this before and they simply just don't arrive and nobody can get hold of them! Such a shame as were out for a friends bday on bother occasions and ruined the nights. First time refund offered and never received this time made up the price of the table in beer but was still not the point and the reason we go to see the band!! This need sorting as everyone was complaining and annoyedMore

We arrived on a Saturday night for our friends leaving do to be welcomed by an angry bar manager who made us all feel very unwelcome and this was only the beginning. After what felt like an age we were finally served and sat down....on...minging sticky benches, I would say it would have been cleaner to sit on the floor but this would have lead to certain death as this had never been cleaned. The toilets were also gross and we were the first people in the door, great start....NOT! we sat and chatted for an hour until we asked when the band was due on... 'They ain't coming are they' was the answer, most helpful. Obviously they had received a tip off about this place and decided better off not to and go elsewhere. We were then politely informed that as the band had jumped ship they had decided not to serve dinner, a great plan I don't think as this was all prepaid in our booking. We had bought a few drinks by this point and needed food. We were told we would receive a full refund but obviously we have not received anything and now they are ignoring us. Such helpful, pleasant people to deal with. I will never go here again and never recommend it to anyone. Awful! Like my title states, the worst place I've ever been.More

I don’t usually write bad reviews as any place can have an off day, but this is different. I read in our Devon news today that the staff here are allegedly owed thousand of pounds in unpaid wages and I can only say I’m not...surprised. This place is billed as a Bavarian Bierkeller which is odd as when my husband asked for a Bavarian bier he was told they don’t sell it, there was a single German beer, which was £5 a pint or £9 a stein, which we were told was the price for all their beers. There were boards on the wall advertising food, but there was no food available as they had no chef. On a Saturday lunchtime we were the only customers and there was one member of staff, who appeared so fed up it was close to rude. We had one drink and left never to return. As a venue for watching sport and drinking over priced drinks till late, this would be your ideal place and they do advertise a German oompah band on weekend nights, which is as close to a genuine Bavarian bierkeller as you are likely to get. My advice, save your money and visit Bavaria, a ticket would probably cost less than a night drinking in this place.More

Not sure why people would choose to frequent this theme bar. It’s overpriced-min £4 pint- which proper West Country is way over the odds - and the variety of beers available is seriously underwhelming. Seems like it’s hanging on for the sake of the music....Without it I’m sure it would fold pretty quicklyMore

hmmmmm overpriced and poor choice £6.50 for a 2 pint stein which equates to £3.25 which i believe is the cheapest on the quay with several pints under £3.75 and £5 house stein offers most weeks. 4 bombs for £10. 5 shots £5. cocktail steins...More

I went there for their live music event this Wednesday and can't believe how incredible this little venue was! The staff are very attentive as well as providing an excellent service throughout, no matter how busy the venue was. The place is pretty small however...if you're going to watch a band and want to be up close and personal with them, this is definitely the venue for you.More
