Let me preface this article by saying I love BBQ. I smoke ribs year round, I eat BBQ everywhere I go and I’ve had some of the best. Kansas City, St. Louis, Texas. So when I heard about Big Tree and read reviews on trip advisor I knew I had to try it. Let me say none of the reviews are right, because none of them This place is so much better than even the best review written. We stopped in about 3 pm and met Marvin. My three year old was crying because we woke her from a nap and he immediately offered her a piece of corn bread that cheered her up. We tried the cayman beef and the ribs. The cayman beef was excellent. A Caymanian version of ropa viejo with just the right amount of spice. The ribs were perfection. Cooked tender, sauced just right with a sweet and Smokey flavor. The smoke profile was great and the ribs just melted in your mouth. Both dishes came with some yucca, rice and beans and plantanos. The location is great, a quiet bend in the road in front of Marvin’s house , tables under a big canopy tree (hence the name). My kids loved watching Rocky the dog sun himself on the lawn. Food on Grand Cayman is expensive. But food at Bug Tree is pretty reasonable. $39 US for the two meals and three drinks. I can’t say enough about this place. If your on the Island for any length of time take the half hour or 45 minutes to drive over to the east side of the island and try some of Marvins outstanding food.

Ribs were amazing and came with multiple side dishes. The owner and his son have everything prepared in advance and sitting in chafing dishes so the food is warm. It was all pretty good and would’ve been even better if he warmed the ribs on the grill before serving so that they’d be hot. Nice folks though and worth going for sure.

Pull up into the driveway or walk on up from the road, place your order with the father and son duo working under the big white awning and have a seat at one of the folding table and chairs beneath the huge tree in the front yard. Your food will be delivered to your table at which time you can't help but engage in conversation with the owner or his son. Big Tree Bbq offers a truly unique dining experience. Home cooked food by the Harris family served straight out of the pan it was made in really gives you a "welcome to the family" sort of vibe. All of the local families stopping in reminded me of my own family barbecues on holiday weekends when I was growing up. The BBQ and sides are excellent with both Caribbean and Jamaican touches. Several people were coming particularly for the turtle and conch. They do have a few local beers in the cooler. You won't be disappointed!

We visited Grand Cayman two years ago and had eaten at Big Tree BBQ. We enjoyed the food then so, of course, we had to visit Arvid and Henry at Big Tree again. The food was still up to the caliber of what we were served back then, which was a good thing. My husband had Arvid make up a combo meal of jerk chicken and beef ribs with all of the extras that go along with the meal. On one visit I tried the stewed shrimp (I believe that’s what it was called). The second visit I had the beef ribs meal. All of our food was delicious. I still REALLY enjoy “momma’s corn bread”. Big Tree is a favorite of ours on Grand Cayman, and we can’t wait for our next vacation so we can eat there again!

Arvid is an amazing chef with a well run business. This was honestly the best meal we had on the island, where we ate out 3 meals a day for two weeks. We tried everything from trip advisors list from $ to $$$$, and coming from nyc we are probably a little spoiled. The other restaurants were just ok, and those on and around seven mile beach were so efficient and mediocre it was like being on a conveyor belt. Come in, sit down, eat quickly, pay and leave so the next table can sit. Arvid makes you feel like family, invites you to his home with home cooked food that you can eat under a big shady tree. The ribs were amazing and easily the best I’ve ever had. On Day 11 we decided it wasn’t worth it to even eat the food on the tourist side of the island and made the trip back to Arvin’s. His spot was the highlight of our trip!

We were staying in the East End and read great reviews for this restaurant. When we pulled up to the restaurant we didn’t know what to expect. You order your food from the garage. It is served in styrofoam containers. We thought it would be too hot to eat there but under the Big tree was very pleasant. We ordered the fried red snapper which came with cole slaw and rice and beans. We had a cold local beer. The price was excellent especially in the Grand Caymans where eating out is very expensive. We enjoyed the red snapper so much we went back another time and took it back to our time share to eat it. Give it a try

The experience is more of a picnic than eating at a restaurant as tables are set up on the grass under a big tree in front of a house. There servers were very friendly and took good care of us. We had the jerk chicken and beef ribs and both meals were excellent. The meat on the beef ribs was fall apart tender and very tasty. There was plenty of jerk chicken and side dishes and was also very tasty. The price for both meals was very reasonable. Highly recommended lunch stop!

My husband and I have been coming to Grand Cayman for 20 years so we have tried many restaurants and have our favorites! Big Tree is now top of the list! This is a family owned restaurant and besides the food being great, the owners are warm, friendly and welcoming. We had the pork ribs, beef(so yummy), amazing corn bread, rice and beans, plantains, small corn on the cob with our meals. Laid back, no frills and just a great island atmosphere. There were 6 of us and we all had great meals and can’t wait to go back. Arvid took very good care of us, even when we needed to clean up after our meals!

Arvin’s warm welcome was heartfelt and our experience was one of the best on the island. The BBQ chicken was sweet and tangy and the jerked chicken was spiced just right! We also opted for the grilled lobster tails- I’ve never had grilled lobster that tasted so good. Don’t forget to grab a Swanky to drink along with tasty home cooked food!

I had read great reviews about Big Tree BBQ and it sounded just like the kind of place we like...totally different than anything on 7 Mile Beach. We had lunch here and loved it! Had the jerk chicken, pork ribs and cayman style beef. The cayman beef was everyone's favorite and was one of the best dishes we have ever eaten! The owner was a great guy and talented chef. Wish we lived closer :).

My husband and I love hitting up local food spots. We were actually trying to go to Vivine’s but found out last minute they didn’t take credit card. That took us to this AMAZING spot Big Tree BBQ where we had the Cayman style beef and Oxtail. Omg it was AMAZING. So good, meat was so soft, perfect flavoring and the owner ARVID was one of the nicest, friendliest and most welcoming people you’ll meet. He chatted with us for a bit and told us a little history about the island. We were asking around what places to eat by people at the hotel and were told places like Peppers which did not even compare. Thanks Arvid for a wonderful meal and we’ll definitely be coming back when we visit again! Hope your business continues to thrive like it deserves.

After driving by several times we decide to stop in and we are so glad we did. I love supporting local businesses during the pandemic! Big tree has phenomenal fish and ribs. You literally get to sit under a big tree while they make up your meals. You can enjoy your meal under the tree or take out. More selections on Sunday than what was left on the menu board today. Currently open 11 to 6. Cash only (USD or CI).

Our best (and most affordable) meal on Grand Cayman. Arvid and his family provide generous helpings of local dishes, with each main and side showing their skill and attention to detail. Highlights from our visit included the best beans and rice we’ve had on the island, delicious cornbread, fried crab, oxtail, shredded beef, and chicken. Easy parking onsite or just a few yards past on the roadside. And make sure to pet Rocky the dog when you visit!

Big Tree BBQ is a must. My husband and I visited while staying on the East End and the food and service was great. It can be hard to find authentic food in the Caymens. Big Tree is definitely authentic and family-owned and run. We had the beef ribs and fried red snapper, both were fantastic and were served with great sides like rice and beans, corn, slaw, and a cake. We spent time talking to Arvid about the island and his family and hope to make it back to visit again!
