What a marvellous menu. This is the best best Chinese food we’ve had in Canada. Across the board excellent, the highlights for us were the wonton soup, Hongkong ribs, salt and lime dry ribs, bbq duck and egg rolls Oh the home fried rice was incredible too. My sons 11 and 7 devoured Many of the dishes and they are picky. Service just lovely and atmosphere buzzing with people who know good food when they taste it; many of them Chinese which speaks volumes! Here’s Dr Claude Botha with talented chef , Ivan.

We dined at The Orient Restaurant again tonight. We have our favourite dishes, but tonight we choose to try something new - the pepper squid. The squid is Excellent and will now be a regular item for us. Chef Ivan takes great care and pride in the food he serves his customers. His Oriental food is unparalleled anywhere I have been. I'm sorry for the gentleman who was disappointed with the menu change - however, trying something new can be the spice of life.

Chef Ivan Chan is an amazing chef with a very creative mind. He uses old family traditional recipes and has a unique ability to create authentic Chinese dishes like I have never experienced before. You just cannot get this anywhere else! A truly unique and very satisfying experience. You can order off the menu (very reasonable prices) or call ahead (a little more depending on the ingredients) if you are planning a special custom dinner. We called ahead and pre ordered his award winning Peeking Duck along with several other over the top delicious dishes. All pics are of dishes custom created for our special meal.

We ordered take out: egg rolls, spring rolls and a couple tofu dishes and some chicken dishes. Overall, each dish had an original flavor that set it apart from other restaurants, but to be honest, not all of those “twists” worked for us. That’s just personal preference. Both of the tofu dishes were good, although I’d prefer the tofu in smaller chunks so there was more crispness to the dish. Nobody enjoyed any of the chicken dishes - flavors were bizarre and the chicken was very chewy. The egg rolls were huge in size and fully stuffed. We all liked the filling, although after eating one you won’t really want another because the seasoning is very strong - reminded me of samosas. The spring rolls are super tiny, and although very crispy, the filling is bland and tastes mostly of overcooked cabbage. No one like those little disasters. I did find the prices high for the portions and wouldn’t rush back anytime soon because despite the accolades, it was just so-so.

Thought we were going to be wowed but instead we were terribly disappointed. The lemon chicken was awful and the beef stir fry lacked beef. Honestly if you want to succeed as a restaurant you need to have more pride in the items you serve. There are other small businesses that merit your support

I 'm old and love basic sweet n sour chicken with chicken fried rice and and egg rolls. Only thing I could get was egg rolls and lots of new dishes that I had no interest in. Chef Ivan said to leave if i was not happy. I can see this place closed with in months after that.New menu sucks...........Going back to china town.........good luck ppl

Unfortunately, Sir, you were still very upset about that ONE items we do not have any more on our menu after two of our front of house staff explained for a long time to you that that the menu has changed and the conversation were getting louder than I would like to see happens in our dinning room. That is why I come to the table and explained that “it is ok to leave if the menu doesn’t offer what you were looking for in a nice way as you seem to be very upset about that ONE item you insist to have which been out of our menu for two months already.

I really enjoyed my meals! The portion are generous. It was tasty and good! I took a fried rice and egg roll it’s cost 30$+ 15% tips. The Woman who serve me is very sweet. It’s sad there isn’t combo or host table for solo people to taste more plates!

The Orient Chinese Cuisine never disappoints. We always make sure to eat here whenever we’re in Halifax. Make sure you order their lobster dishes in advance since Chef Ivan get them fresh from the fisherman himself.

This tiny restaurant does mostly takeout. Order online and they bring it out to your car. The food is probably the best Chinese food I have ever had. I have never been to China, so can't comment on authenticity, but it is a varied and interesting menu. The Sechuan eggplant is moderately spicy and delicious, pork with scallions ,chicken with ginger, and fried rice, all terrific.

Chef Ivan, a gold medal winner, prepared an outstanding meal for us. Each dish was crafted and beautifully presented. The mini taro root nest with sugar snap peas, local scallops, and crispy leek threads was a wonderful sight and a pleasure to eat the entire creation. His specialty Peking duck, wonton taco, kimchi, and shilgochu is so tasty we want to order it each time! We asked Chef beforehand to prepare a meal for us and definitely were delighted. He explained each dish. We highly recommend this restaurant and will be back again.

Our first visit at dinner time, this restaurant is an upscale Chinese restaurant with an extensive array of individual dishes. There is no pre-set menu offered other than one named "Meat Lovers" which we tried. On the plus side the food was generous, tasty, fresh and original. Service was very willing. On the negative side, other than no offering of pre-set meals (understandable in an upscale establishment), the entrance and surrounds were very grubby. We were provided literally ice cold plates from which to eat our food, We had to have them warmed which they willingly did, but disappointing that we had to ask. They offer absolutely no coffee of any description. The washroom was clean but both sink taps ran only cold water. We decided not to return, even though we live locally and eat out a lot.

Three birthday women and their spouses arrived to a freezing cold restaurant. We requested more heat and landed up turning up the thermostat ourselves. That was a just the beginning. Appetizers, egg rolls were certainly far from the "best egg rolls in Halifax" and the barbecued pork was hard and dry. We each ordered a dish. The ginger chicken had not a hint of ginger. The sweet and sour chicken was okay nothing great. The salt and pepper shrimp were breaded over unpeeled shrimp but we're well cooked once you removed the skin and batter. One other dish was not memorable. Our wheat allergy friend could only eat rice. There was too much onion in every dish but few other more interesting vegetables other than a sparce amount a few tiny slices of red and green pepper. Very expensive and a total disappointment.

Over priced and It’s gone downhill since our previous visits; upon entering the building we notice the windows are grubby, inside is not as clean and welcoming as it should or could be. We were shocked at the price increases since our last visit. we ordered only 2 wanton soup and only two stirfry dishes to share and just water to drink it came to $100 The soup broth was flavourful and enjoyable, the wontons in the soup, had a fishy flavour that i was not found of but overall we enjoyed the soup. The meat in the stirfries was overly salty ( and this is coming from someone who loves salt). It was not the usual delicious food this chef is capable of creating.

I had been told by many that The Orient had delicious Chinese food, so I decided to give it a try. The Ginger Beef had huge chunks of beef instead of slivered which would have made it more tender. The rice and the Szechuan Stir Fry, were good but the whole meal was way TOO salty. Will not order from them again.
