Eclectic corner “cafe” with pink neon. Super fun. The drink menu is very well thought out and crafted. The dishes were all thoughtful and intended to share which adds to the ambiance. We started with three drinks off the menu and one of the daily featured drinks. Delicious. We ordered the smoked goldeye (a local fish) with an amazing dip and house made chips. We argued whether we were going to order a second of these. We also had the squid with chili vinegar that was perfect and fresh. Clean flavors and the squid was done as it should be. Then our Australian server said we had to try the potatoes. OMG! One of the best things we have tasted ever. The nori brought this wonderful nutty fresh sea flavor, the potatoes had this nice crunch while still fluffy, the roe was a wonderful little flavor burst and the crisp capicola brought all the flavors to another realm. We are trying to figure if we can get back to have them again before we leave.

The dishes at Deer + Almond are unique, small plates designed to be shared tapas fashion, and the menu changes daily. We've been there 4-5 times over 2 years, and have never had a dish we didn't love. They even offered to prepare something off the menu for a special dietary need, and modified the dishes served accordingly. For example, they offered a breaded squid on the menu, but made it without the breading, pan seared, for us - and it was so tender and tasty. The chef and staff are excellent and friendly. It is always a treat.

This restaurant came as a recommendation from one of the shops I visited nearby. From out of town I had never heard of the place but I am pleased to have gotten the suggestion! The cost/value proposition here is very solid with high-quality food and service for a very fair price.
Their menu is a four-course set-up where the diner is given a choice among three or four dishes at each of the courses. The standouts for me were the pasta, which had sesame seed and chili in the sauce—a real surprise and something that seemed to get better with each bit, and the dessert, which was a peanut butter something that was, well, really something. My other two courses were very good as well but the pasta and the peanut butter were special experiences.
I was served at the bar and the service could not have been more friendly, from my server to those who brought out and described each dish, the hospitality was the perfect mix of friendly and professional.
Very highly recommended.

After reading the reviews of Winnipeg restaurants for years this restaurant was always well rated and I decided to try it out. They offer a tasting menu and you can add items from a short list if you want. The tasting menu items are clearly all made in advance and most courses are cold or lukewarm when served. The flavors were not great. It was like the chef was more focused on trying different techniques then ensuring the food was tasty and hot. The scallops were old tasting and I choose the main of pickeral and it was the worst pickeral I've ever eaten. It was cured and the pan fried , served with a thick unpleasant "Hollandaise" and barely lukewarm. The dessert was a honey cake with squash ice cream. When eaten together there was literally no flavor it was like they cancelled each other out and the ice cream by itself was not good. Two tasting menus, two drinks, water and coffee cost $220. The waitress we had was fantastic though. When you are serving a tasting menu in the winter in Winnipeg you might want to consider that most people will want hot food when it's -20 outside. I would give it no stars but the food was edible and the service good. This is not fine dining by any standard.

I was hoping to be thrilled with our tasting menu dinner, but sadly I was not.
The amuses and the second course were the standouts. The wine pairings throughout were uninspired and failed to elevate the dining experience in any way. The final dessert wine was corked. No one came by to check on us, our “sommelier” was busy on a laptop at the bar at that point.
A couple of specific issues. The wine server kept removing his mask as he spoke with us, at length, making us quite nervous.
Secondly, the portion sizes on the wagyu cheek main varied so dramatically, it was almost comical, if not so annoying. I ended up with the child sized portion.
Unlikely to return, although the pricing offers good value on a good night.

We visited this restaurant a couple years ago and were pleasantly surprised.
Our next experience last week turned to the worst one. We waited for the main course for almost 1.5 hours which was taken with us in the bag because we had to leave.
Very expensive
Lots of cilantro herb ( we are not big fans of it)
Long time for waiting your food ( if you don’t have free 3-4 hours)

I went there with my Mom for dinner. The food was fantastic, we received the best service and they even specialized a drink for my Mom. Not only was the food perfect, the hostess was personable and the table sitting beside was like sitting beside family. We will definitely be back!

It was my wife's birthday we were celebrating while visiting Winnipeg as our daughter prepares to start University here and I wanted a special place for a dinner experience. Knowing she is a 'foodie' I checked online and found Deer + Almond. I do not understand the name but I liked what I read online.
It is in the Exchange District in Winnipeg. Not a large space it was friendly and open aired but not noisy.
It is largely a fixed menu for a fixed price. You have some choices for main entree and that is all. We also did the wine pairings with it.
In short it was fabulous. Inventive food, sourced fresh locally where possible, with lots of flavour. The portions were small but given the number of 'courses' with the wine pairings, we were completely satisfied by the end.
Daniel, the Sommellier, took us on an interesting journey with unusual wines from Spain, Portugal, Germany and France, amongst others. He has a passion for his wine and it is unfortunate that the Manitoba government is not as open and innovative for alcohol as we get to enjoy in Alberta. Nevertheless, the choices were so good I got a list from him of what he served.
It is not inexpensive, but this is dining at its finest and a credit to this city.

Best experience ever!!!! Came here with a couple of friends and family. Eclectic and sophisticated meals with an explosion of flavors. Music that put you in a relaxing mood, with true local product will make you forget that you’re in Winnipeg ! The chef even came out to say hello and ask our opinion. Would definitely recommend it.

Outstanding experience at deer+almond. The food was exceptional. Each course was aesthetically pleasing and absolutely delicious. My husband and I ordered different items than each other from each course so we could taste multiple things. The portions were perfect where we didn’t feel like we ate too little or too much. The cocktails were beautifully prepared and were delicious. We didn’t order the wine pairing but one of the server’s brought us a taste of the wine for our main course which was so thoughtful. One of the co-owners came out to speak to us at the end of our meal and it really showed the dedication to their customers and the overall experience at the restaurant. Our main server was phenomenal and took such great care of us to ensure we had a fabulous experience. All of the servers work together to help each other and they all were so kind to us during the entire dinner. Highly recommend this restaurant for outstanding food, outstanding customer service and outstanding vibes. Kudos to you all for such a great place!

The service and food in this bright and friendly establishment was top notch. Our waiter was fully knowledgeable about every aspect of the menu and his descriptions of the food were spot on. He was enthusiastic and clearly loved his job, which contributed to the good feeling one has dining here. The four course menu was excellent, with interesting choices and flavours. I left fully stuffed but wishing I could eat more!

A small semi-fine dining place. Price is reasonable for the type of service and the food that they offered. If you haven't experience or not familiar about what tasting menu is all about and on a budget, the restaurant is a good place to start. Worth trying if you want to practice your taste palette and can't afford a New York Fine dining experience. Good place for a simple business casual attire date night.

Our server was outstanding, professional, helpful, and attentive.
The fine dining experience was somewhat marred by uncomfortable, wobbly table and chairs which seemed inconsistent with the upscale ambiance and high prices. (Paid 100++ per person 4 course with upgrades and coffee)
Also, the serving of the courses was slow paced. But on a positive note, the majority of the tasting menu was delicious albeit very small.

Business dinner in Winnipeg that absolutely blew away my expectations. We regularly book tasting menus and the best TA restaurants where ever we go but I have not had a comparable tasting menu experience in a while. We shared all of the items we chose from each course so we tasted most of the available selections. Creative, interesting and perfectly prepared without exception on each course. An outstanding experience. Do not miss a chance to try this place.

Our ultimate compliment: We went back a couple of weeks later. We're not the type that always goes to the same comfortable venue. This place knocked our expectations out of the park! Original combinations, good value considering, and a wonderful epicurean experience. It is a place for great food at fair value (not cheap but fair) and to share with friends.
It isn't all that romantic though and somewhat noise. There is a comfortable chaos to the ambiance.
