About
James Avenue Pumphouse Food & Drink, is built in a historical building which was Winnipeg's first high-pressure water system. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer front row seats to this engineering feat, with century-old pumps and gears preserved for posterity. Built in 1906 to help fight the frequent fires of downtown Winnipeg, the James Avenue Pumping Station drew water from the Red River for distribution to the area’s fire hydrants. The building was declared a municipal heritage site in 1982. We offer high and low table seating. We feature a custom made wooden bar top and 2 large family style tables built by local designer Jordan from Beard Brothers Woodworking. The refurbished brick structure is punctuated by vintage fire hose carts, red hydrants, and copper fire extinguishers. At the center of it all, the preserved machinery is our star attraction.

We finally were able to get in here, and were not disappointed. Every element of the experience - from the ambiance, to the service, to the food, was excellent. The building itself is lovely inside and out, and the brief writeup in the menu regarding the history is a nice touch. We were promptly seated upon arrival, and our server got to us within a reasonable time. Drinks came out in good time, as did appetizers and entrees. The pace of the meal went at just the right speed. For appetizers we ordered the giant perogy and the mango cauliflower bites. Both were good - but especially the cauliflower. For entrees, our table ordered the Thai bowl, the pasta primavera, and the mussels. Everyone said their food was good - my mussels were very good, and represented a good portion of food (mussels, fries, and naan bread) for the price. Overall, definitely a place we'd like to return to!

Great food! Loved the separate vegetarian and vegan menu (although why put things with fish on it?--just made me disappointed I couldn't have them). Cool cocktails. Food prices are great, cocktails quite pricing (in fact the food and cocktails are the same price). Amazing atmosphere. Great location. Great staff.

Came here a few times so far and each time was great! From the food to the drinks to the vibes and the views - everything exceeded our expectations. There is something on the menu for everyone to enjoy depending on your mood which we loved. We literally could stay there all night just to drink and eat. Our favourite dishes so far are the Detroit pizza, the double double burger *chefs kiss* glazed salmon bowl (perfect for lunch) chili coconut mussels just to name a few. Oh and THE VEGAN/VEGETARIAN menu just as good with many options!! So YES, this is the place to bring your friends, moms bestfriend, dads uncles brother in law, 5 year old nephew, your wife's step-brother's fiance, you name it! And don't skip the dessert! The Elvis will end your night off just right.

The pump house is a gorgeous venue, and all the feel of something that should be excellent. Wow does it miss the mark The food is average at best, the menu is an incoherent disaster. I had joked that it reminded me of moxies, which is, I've been told the background of the owners. Tacos, pizza, Asian noodles.. it's like they just looked at a terrible chain restaurant and went with whatever they thought sounded good. The cocktails are poorly executed, the 16 draft taps sound great except that a venue this small can't handle that many so you end up with flat skunky beer and over half the taps are dedicated to beers no one should ever be drinking. It's a shame they didn't put more local taps on. And the few local taps they do have are an embarassment of greed. 12 dollars for a 16oz kilter is way overpriced. We were quite excited to check out the place, our group only ended up staying for a couple drinks and a few apps, we ended up leaving finding somewhere more appealing for dinner.

Made before theatre reservations here and both food and service were fantastic. The history of the pumphouse, whose workings can be seen behind glass, was written on the menu and was a wonderful centerpoint of this restaurant. Cocktail 'happy hour' was a treat and the 6 of us each tried something different from the menu. The mango pesto cauliflower appetizer was a real treat and the yam fries were delicious. Each of the meals we ordered were there steaming hot and delicious! Special shout out that the menu lists vegan dishes and signify's the spiciness of their dishes. They also have a wide variety of meals to choose from so you cannot identify this restaurant as a specific cultural theme. WE are definitely returning as its only a 5 minute walk from the Concert Hall!

Inattentive service. Food quality good. Atmosphere good. Was on business lunch and would have appreciated my guests being offered a refill on drinks or even asked how the food was. Poor today not always poor.

Phenomenal place, a must go to view the old Pumphouse. The food was great, reasonably priced, was really busy, seated and served promptly, dinner served fast and piping hot, excellent food and dessert was delicious. Definitely worth the visit, highly recommended to all, and will be back.

I met a friend for lunch at the restaurant. Good atmosphere. Pump mechanism is interesting. We both enjoyed our meals - Double Double Burger and Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich. Draught beer was cold and fresh. Service was attentive.

By far, the unique atmosphere stands out among ALL dining experiences, located in a 1930's fire pump house, built to protect the city. Terrific service by the friendly and inviting manager (recently promoted). The food was creative, reasonably priced and very tasty. There was also a wide variety of beers on tap. Most especially enjoyed a couple different IPA's

Had a nice lunch of Dan-dan noodles here and a wild glass of white wine sangria. Food was really good. Drink spectacular. Seemed a little understaffed with two servers trying to keep all customers in this very large space happy. With more help, the place could be even more top notch.

Food was ok. Drinks are 15 + which is very overpriced imo The restaurant was the loudest I have ever been in. I will not be returning for that reason There was a batchelorette party going on while there This may have added to the noise Parking was difficult. Not a great area

This restaurant is very pretty and has an impressive history. We had a group of around 20 people and the service was impressively fast and accurate! The food here is AMAZING. I had a pound of muscles with curly fries and it was very good! I added the garlic aioli on the side to dip my fries (a must try!). A had a Caesar to drink and it was one of the best drinks I have had in a while. My co-worker ordered the giant perogie which had excellent reviews. I would definitely come back here.

Absolutely delightful setting and you can just feel the history and the superb way they have incorporated the pump house elements. The food is pretty good and decent size portions too and the service is excellent. Why not a five then? The food is pretty good but only 4/5. The real problem is the terrible acoustics in there. All the sound echoes so it's hard to hold a conversation and definitely not a place for a romantic date. Plus they play the music too loud, which makes the echoing even worse. The range of beers isnt great either, considering how many super breweries Winnipeg now has. Hopefully this all gets sorted and can give a five on next visit.

We had a delicious dinner at this restaurant last evening. The four of us all enjoyed our meals The beef tacos on the small plate menu were outstanding. The three tacos made for a filling meal. The dinner side salad was also very good. The fish and chips and sandwich were also enjoyed. Next visit we will try desserts. Options looked interesting.

Love this place! It's so cool inside to see all the old pumphouse equipment! I got the fried cauliflower and blackened tacos as appetizers, which were both great! I highly recommend the entree i got which is the DanDanThai!! Service by Shaye was phenomenal, and the manager, Jerry stopped by to make sure everything was awesome!
