Passing through Havana on business for the first time, I was recommended La Makina by a friend. Tucked away on a rooftop up a side street, my taxi driver had to ask for directions twice, so be prepared with Google maps or paper equivalents.
But...once there you are truly in the heart of Havana, a cosy terrace with 7 tables, or the more brightly lit inside dining room downstairs. I would recommend asking for a table upstairs when you book - and with 7 table upstairs it is wise to book. A word of warning if you are averse to smoking, they do permit this on the open roof terrace, so if cigarettes or cigars trouble you, this may not be your thing, although the night breeze did a great job with what smoke there was when I was there.
Service is very friendly and some English is spoken. Food is typically Cuban and nicely prepared. Specials the day I visited included Octopus, clams and lobster. I skipped the lobster and went for fried pork, served with rice & beans, vegetables. Chocolate tart was washed down with the recommended digestivo ‘Orgasmo’! Oh and of course there are also the regular mojitos, daiquiris etc.
The whole experience felt simple, heart-felt, authentic and nicely done. Even down to the resident band of musicians who I could still hear playing as I reluctantly headed up the street to find my taxi home - they almost had me running back up the stairs for one more song and a third espresso...
Go to La Makina, I know I will be going back before too long!More
