Our first encounter with this restaurant was when we met a young man on the street, encouraging us to visit the restaurant. We had other plans but promised to come back and we did. It is a magical little place on a narrow street in...old Havana. It is on two levels: street level and a dining room and terrace on the second floor. The staff are so friendly! Many if not all of them speak English which helps if you are Spanish-challenged. The food is a wide variety of Cuban food. Very beautifully presented and very tasty. Back in Canada now wishing I could be there tonight for dinner. We were there four times. Twice we were there ourselves and twice we took guests who were very impressed and enjoyed the place a great deal...More

I have been here four times and the food, presentation, waitstaff and decor is outstanding. It is very near the Museum of the Revolution in Havana. On two occasions, Alberto was our server and he as well as others are terrific. The servers are not...intrusive but are there to meet your every need. The Ropa Vieja and civiche are spectacular as well as cocktails. I can't say enough about this wonderful and inexpensive restaurant!More

On our last visit, we went to this restaurant for dinner twice. It was recommended to us by our host Maria. Lovely little spot on the terrace with live music. The cocktails were great and the food was just out of this world. We had...lobster tails cooked to perfection. The girl serving us spoke passable English. I wish we had asked for her name to compliment her for her caring and always smiling nature. Would highly recommend.More

We like eating on the balcony. Everything is good - service, drinks, food. One evening there was live music, an excellent duo with wonderful voices.

This restaurant is located right next to the Museo de la Revolución (down a side street). We stopped by for lunch and got the octopus with mango, malanga, fish fillet, and a bread basket. All were delicious and reasonably priced. The octopus was my favorite...that I had in Cuba. Make sure to site upstairs on the terrace!More

It is small but it is a great stop for good drinks and great food. The ceviche was fantastic. Didn't have time to eat a second meal there but definitely tried.

Had a lovely meal on the open top terrace with appropriate live music played by musicians. I ordered the lobster and bread basket and wondered if I needed more but both were generous helpings. Had a nice cocktail as well. The restaurant wasn't busy and...the atmosphere was very nice. Some of the mains were around 10-14 CUC which was reasonable. My lobster was 17CUC.More

This was our first meal in Cuba. We wanted to eat light, because we were meeting the rest of our tour group for dinner that night. The stairs up to the patio are steep, and a little scary, but totally worth it for the beautiful...colorful view. I had a chicken salad, which was heavy on the chicken and light on the lettuce. It was actually delicious, filled with fruit and nuts and a balsamic vinegar sauce. My husband ordered the bread basket (to enjoy with his beer) and it was really delicious. The bread was fresh, hot and crisp. There were also some savory (homemade) crackers and breadsticks. At first it seemed pricey at $5, but it was actually quite abundant. Overall, the prices were a little higher then we expected, but the quality was definitely there. (it didn't help that my husband was carrying a minimal amount of CUCs at that moment, having spent more then expected for the entry to the Museum of the Revolution) Overall it was a very pleasant meal.More

On a recent rip to Havana La Makina happened to be just across the street from my casa. It was a fortuitous find, as I thoroughly enjoyed two meals there. Nice selection on the menu, moderate prices and good service.

Passing through Havana on business for the first time, I was recommended La Makina by a friend. Tucked away on a rooftop up a side street, my taxi driver had to ask for directions twice, so be prepared with Google maps or paper equivalents. But...once there you are truly in the heart of Havana, a cosy terrace with 7 tables, or the more brightly lit inside dining room downstairs. I would recommend asking for a table upstairs when you book - and with 7 table upstairs it is wise to book. A word of warning if you are averse to smoking, they do permit this on the open roof terrace, so if cigarettes or cigars trouble you, this may not be your thing, although the night breeze did a great job with what smoke there was when I was there. Service is very friendly and some English is spoken. Food is typically Cuban and nicely prepared. Specials the day I visited included Octopus, clams and lobster. I skipped the lobster and went for fried pork, served with rice & beans, vegetables. Chocolate tart was washed down with the recommended digestivo ‘Orgasmo’! Oh and of course there are also the regular mojitos, daiquiris etc. The whole experience felt simple, heart-felt, authentic and nicely done. Even down to the resident band of musicians who I could still hear playing as I reluctantly headed up the street to find my taxi home - they almost had me running back up the stairs for one more song and a third espresso... Go to La Makina, I know I will be going back before too long!More

We arrived around 10pm and the staff was standing outside. We asked if they were open, but no one knew. They did let us inside after a brief conversation with the boss but that interaction was weird. The table was a bit sticky and we...asked if they could wipe it in English and Spanish, but the waitress did not seem to understand. Despite the confusing service, the food was good. We were there for a quick meal, and ordered croquettes and clams. The clams were fresh and had a flavorful sauce. The pina colada was also good, though a tad heavy on the cream. Overall, good food and decent drinks, but the waiters were not helpful and were nowhere to be found.More
