We visit Jumas at least once during our yearly visits and normally get a solid meal with great service. Not this year! I know Covid has wreaked havoc with staffing but this year the service staff was clearly overworked and unsupported by management (who just seemed to sit at the bar chatting). They are clearly afraid of him because our server only wanted to take two or three glasses at time for fear of breaking one and being charged $50 for replacement. Our dinner was marred by slow service , a large cockroach that danced on the wall and ceiling as we ate, and an awful, too loud 90’s alternative duo that did not sure the ambiance at all. The food was substandard. The lobster “bisque” was so spicy that it was inedible. The person that had it managed to get through 3/4 of it before giving up. Our server was impressed “most only get through half” (perhaps someone should tell the chef that or at least warn diners when they order it). The lobster was tough and tasted “off”, the steak was a thin piece of hanger steak, the spaghetti Bolognese was also surprisingly spicy, and the seafood linguine was a mush of over cooked spaghetti. Give Jumas a pass until they get their act together.

When we arrived the Owner/manageress was in dispute with a customer & 2 waiters over a bill, so we were ignored for several minutes. When invited to order drinks, Happy hour was advertised, so we said to the wine waiter that we alluded to this & ordered a beer & glass of wine in the hope of a discount. However AFTER they were brought to us, we were advised that they did not qualify - only rum punch! When we asked why this was not pointed out to us, the answer was “I thought you knew”! (Most establishments locally advertising “Happy Hours” do not impose these restrictions, so we thought this misdescription inexcusable & what is more when pointed out, no offer was made to discount the drinks! Then they could not deliver on the advertised menu at 5.30pm - out of “Spring Rolls”! And main course; ordered grilled “catch of day”, but served up blackened! Also soggy unappealing chips! Expensive: 2 courses (cheaper choices) + 3 glasses of wine & one local beer was charged at bds$258 (£95) !! However On the plus side: good ambiance, nicely laid-out tables & a lovely view to watch the sunset & lovely Barracuda (catch of the day) & nice sirloin steak + gratinoise potato. And our lady waitress did try hard to compensate for the failures of the wine drinks server & the ineffective, greedy management with her pleasant manner. However on the plus side:

We ordered lunch today whilst on the beach, it was brought to our sun loungers , along with a couple of rum punches. Hubby and I both had the fish, mahi mahi and barracuda, both were delicious, good service, and very good value. Coffee at the end was a disappointment, I paid $10 for a cappuccino, but it was basically just filter coffee with milk, and it was disgusting. Never mind, we’ll know for next time. Great stretch of beach, plenty of sun loungers for hire too.

I'm very sad to say that this has been of my poorest meals in Barbados. I had the burger and my gf had a shrimp baguette with fries. The burger was very dry and my fries were cold. I asked for my burger to be without onions... Which they forgot. The baguette was undercooked and obviously the frozen type you buy from the supermarket. The shrimps were just cold shrimps with no flavour. Also, both portions of fries were soggy. I asked for garlic mayo with my fries. Which they didn't have one the menu, but our servers said she was sure they could make. However, our food came and no garlic mayo. When I asked for it, the reply was that the kitchen couldn't find the garlic... No substitute was offered, not even regular mayo. The servers did not seem too concerned about asking us how our meal was. If they had we might have had the opportunity to ask them to rectify the mistakes. There were so many small issues that at this point we just ate our food and left. They did remove one of the portions of fries from the bill without us asking. (But it had become clear to them that we were not satisfied.)

While we waited on our food we noticed that many people were constantly in and out of the kitchen. One of those persons was clearly not a staff member and he was not wearing a mask (or hairnet) and did not sanitize upon entering. I spoke to the person in charge of the operation, she was very flippant about my concern and said that all of her staff wear masks. I told her that the person did not appear to be a staff member and that he chatted with the kitchen staff and left with a bit of food in foil paper. She asked, ‘Do you mean Thomas?’. It appears that Thomas is a boat/ jetski operator/ independent beach attendant who just came in off the beach and went directly into the kitchen because he is familiar to the establishment. As I tried to explain this, the lady in charge said to me that she has better things to do and she’s no longer speaking to me. She refused to give me her name and none of the staff members were willing to identify her or themselves. I was also told by one of the staff members in the kitchen ‘but you have to eat with your mask off so what’s the big deal’. Thinking back on the entire experience there was no one to greet guests entering the establishment so anyone could enter, the sanitizing machine was empty so we were not sanitized and many staff members wore their masks incorrectly. It is clear that the head of the establishment is either unaware or does not care about proper covid protocols and this trickles down to the poor attitude of the staff members. To make a bad situation worse, they charged $44 for two (poorly made) amaretto rum sours. They refused to give me a copy of my receipt. However I was able to take a picture of it (photo attached).

Ok I accept that we’re coming out of a pandemic and that life has been difficult for small restaurants but our experience at Jumas last week was ridiculous. We went last Monday. We couldn’t get through to the land line, which apparently was down but booked a table for supper on line. On arrival the place was totally empty and therefore lacking in atmosphere. We considered leaving and going next door to Lone Star which was reasonably busy but decided, having made the reservation, that in fairness to the owners and staff that we should stay. We had a couple of drinks and then ordered only to discover that lots on the menu was unavailable. No spring rolls, no salad, no ice cream. My wife doesn’t eat sea food and we decided to pass on starters as there was so little available. I ordered the Sea FoodThermidor and my wife rack of lamb. Both were uninspiring and not given away!! The final disaster was when I asked for bill, having had to forego dessert as there was no vanilla or rum and raisin ice cream available ( we were in Barbados!!) I presented my credit card only to be told, for the first time, that there credit card machine was not working. I had no local currency on me and was livid. I said to the waitress that this was unacceptable and that we should have been told on arrival. She shrugged her shoulders and I spoke to someone else from the kitchen who said they were sorry but there was nothing they could do. Fortunately I had some dollars on me and paid with them. I could easily not had cash and really feel that this sought of behaviour is totally unforgivable and unacceptable. I have had a subsequent unsatisfactory email with owner. He offered us a free Sunday lunch but frankly we have no desire to return to the restaurant and we were leaving the island on Saturday

Dear David, Quite why you need to be so economical with the truth is beyond me. Firstly, our phone line was down from the Friday previous to your dining with us, until the following day. Although we reported it immediately, it took some days to be repaired and during that time we were unable to run credit cards as point of sale machine runs on wifi. I personally took your reservation by e mail and organised a complimentary shuttle from your hotel, but you seem to have forgotten about this in your review. I also explained that our phone line was down at present. Flow, the local provider had assured us that the service would be back obnoxiously that afternoon, so at this point we did not see an issue with being able to accept cards. However, the line did not get restored until the next day and our waitress assures me that she told you on arrival that we were unable to accept cards due to the phone line being down, and you made the choice to stay despiser your obvious desire to go to the Lonestar. We have a very large and eclectic menu, and there were a few items unavailable that night, but you still had in excess of ten choices for each course. I take exception to your stating that we did not have any vanilla or rum and raisin ice cream as we were in fact fully stocked on all flavours, but the reality is that we would have ended up giving it to you for free any way as your bill, without dessert, was $210 and you only paid $200. I received your e mail that night and came to the restaurant immediately to see what had happened, so I am surprised when during the course of our e mail conversation I told you that the lonestar was more than likely similarly quiet as very few restaurants on the island would be busy on a Monday night in the current circumstances. You responded that you had called in to the lonestar on the way back to the hotel and that there were several cars outside and about thirty people eating, which is strange because when I passed by less than ten minutes later there were no cars in the car park and the doors were closed. Yes, I offered you a free Sunday lunch as I thought you might enjoy the lively atmosphere that our beach BBQ has, but you declined. I tried but it was clearly impossible to keep you happy and you informed me if your intention to write a bad review, and now you've done it, well done, I hope you are very pleased with yourself.

Food flavoursome and good service. Quite expensive and not well presented. A bit rough and ready - a staff member came through the restaurant a couple of times with a supermarket bag with the white bread which was being cut up and toasted and put with the pate. There was live music and we had to sit right next to it and couldn’t hear our own conversation. We had the complementary transport. It turned up on time. We managed to get the same driver to take us home and he tried to charge us for both trips and it took some firm explaining to just be overcharged for one way. I wouldn’t go back in the evening. Probably on for lunch if already on the beach.

If I could have given negative stars I would have. I have never been to a worse restaurant in my entire life. The service was a joke. We sat down for dinner and weren’t served a drink for 1 hour after ordering. I went up to the bar and just served ourselves. There were servers just wandering around with basically every table complaining about how slow they were. 3 of the 6 tables walked out. We ordered jumbo shrimps, jerk wings, a curry, and their roast chicken. Only the “jumbo” shrimps and wings came out as appetizers after 1.5 hours. The shrimps were literally 3 baby shrimps for 50 BBD. The server was extremely rude when we asked about where our food was and he swore at my girlfriend when we asked why fries take 1 hour to make. We then got up and left and the guy threatened us to pay for everything. I ended up having to pay because he was cornering me in the restaurant. When we were leaving we saw cockroaches all around the kitchen. Please do not go here. You have been warned.

This was my first time visiting here in the new location at the previous location always had a great meal and service. Sadly this will probably be my first and last visit here. Firstly transport did not arrive to collect us, called the restaurant only to be told I had no booking, however this was then found has been put in on wrong day. Finally arrived to be told by 3 staff member servers there was no booking,I explained the situation and we were shown to a table near the bar, the music, which was loud with us been close to the speakers. I asked if we could move to an empty table on the beach side and was informed it was reserved no one used the table whilst we were there. Our table had no table cover, no condiments and we offered water, no server asked if we wanted drinks and we had to catch the attention of staff to actually get food menus, and again to get a wine menu. Staters arrived, one in a cracked and chipped bowl, the goats cheese was lovely but the beetroot was very sparse, lots of lettuce, 2 small pieces of tomato, and cucumber and no dressing when we requested this we were fetched a sauce which I think was for my brothers fish cakes. Mains arrived, 2 of us had blackened catch of the day, both of us felt this was over seasoned and i could not eat this, the seasoning totally over powered the fish and therefore I could not tell if the fish was good or not. The server then began taking plates away before we had all finished eating which as you know should not happen. We raised concerns with the server and the daughter of the owner but these were just brushed off. So we paid and left and made our own way back to our accommodation. I have emailed the restaurant but has yet had no response. Will not be going again anytime soon.

We arrived here & we’re excited to try out the food on offer, we wish we hadn’t bothered, it was bland tasteless & barely warm (all 5 meals) The staff didn’t have a clue!!! We ordered Strawberry daiquiris, the first round were lovely, then a new chap took over & the next round had sat in the heat on the bar for that long they had melted & tasted awful. The food was very overpriced, even if it had been hot it would’ve been a let down, it was bland & tasteless. No atmosphere whatsoever!!! The staff didn’t seem to know what was going on, every time we asked for something the waiter disappeared to check, it was a complete let down & a total waste of an evening to be honest!! I would not recommend eating here.

The absolute worst experience I have had in a restaurant in a long time. Staff uninterested, indifferent and not trained, clearly no interest in their job, unaware of any details on the menu. The fajitas were a single wrinkled green wrap, Food came at all times, not together and was way over priced. Never again.

While on holiday in Barbados recently, we booked a table for 6 at Jumas. We had been told to arrive at 6:45, which we duly did but they seemed not to be expecting us. The restaurant was only half full but it seemed to be a huge problem for them to find us a table. After some delay, with reluctance they eventually put two tables together, but then laid up for seven people. When this was pointed out, they seemed confused, then eventually took a place setting away, but left us with missing cutlery and napkins, which we eventually had to ask for. There were no apologies for muddling up our booking and we were made to feel very unwelcome. Having finally ordered, we waited an hour for the first two meals to arrive. 15 minutes later, two more arrived. One of these was sent back because it was cold- none of the food was as hot as it should have been. Eventually the final meal arrived- it was supposed to be seafood Thermidor but could be picked up as a lump on a fork like a lollipop. The waitress did offer a replacement, but with the rest of the food taking so long to arrive and being so mediocre, a replacement was refused. The waitress agreed to take the cost of this meal off the bill. On finishing our meal, we were given the bill, which we were preparing to pay, when the waitress came back to say they had missed off a bottle of sparkling water and needed to add it. This was the final straw of what had been a very miserable experience. We had no apology at any stage for having to stand like lemons in the middle of the restaurant while they reluctantly set up a table for us, slow and surly service, cold and in some cases inedible food and they now wouldn’t even consider a complimentary bottle of water. After telling us we could speak to the manager, who was on her way in, then that she wasn’t coming and no one on the premises was authorised to take anything off the bill, we had a half hour stand off and then very reluctantly the water plus another portion of food was taken off the bill and we paid and left. Altogether a disgraceful evening!!

Note this is now called Juma's Restaurant (formerly in Speightstown). Photos of the restaurant from other reviews are accurate, but I don't think food ones are (apart from the two I post here). I also allow for the fact that during the curfew period here in Barbados restaurants are struggling, if even open. However, that said, this restaurant disappoints. The venue is nice - but so is any restaurant overlooking a tropical sea. I'm glad I didn't spend more money on lobster, but I did have the "seafood thermidor" which appeared to be missing fundamental ingredients of mustard and brandy - quite nice, but it's a gratin, not a thermidor. Jumbo shrimp were doused in a sweet sauce, not very nice. As for starters, the crab spring roll was dark brown inside (didn't look or taste like crab) and was probably taken frozen from a chinese supermarket pack. It's all edible, the place is nice, but it's just too expensive for what it is - improve the food quality rather than cut the prices. As for service, let's just call it unprofessional. This restaurant will never compete with Lone Star next door (except on price!) unless it ups its game. Shame.

My family visited Jumas in August of 2021 and the food and service was excellent. We decided to go back on our last visit, February 2022 and were greatly disappointed. The service was the worst I have ever experienced in my 16 visits to Barbados. The intervals between having a server come to the table were lengthy and after the initial round of drinks no one came back to see if we needed refills or even water. The food was lackluster and devoid of the flavors we came to expect from a restaurant of this caliber. My advice is to skip Jumas and visit another restaurant in the same price range. We won't be back to Jumas.
