Hidden away; modern; English-friendly; spectacular. Just a few of the words that came to mind while getting a chance to eat at Sushi Hayakawa - which came at the recommendation of one of my Chinese friends. Coming into Sushi Hayakawa is the first part of...the journey (other than making the reservation which is very much encouraged). You might get a little lost. Feel free to call but you'll have to go into an elevator and look for it in a narrow, very bright hallway. Once you open the right door though, you're met with a very modern and black marble/simple decor and just about 7 seats total in the room (although I believe there is another room to the side). Next, you'll be seated right in front of the chef and a lone bonsai tree. Don't know Japanese? That's quite okay as you're given literal cards in English about the dishes you're about to eat - simple yet so much detail I've never seen in any other restaurant. What awaits you is a sushi journey that feels personal and magical. Whether it's the prawn that the chef shows you first live before cooking it and then placing it in your hand or the red snapper box being cooked over wood - the presentation is absolutely stellar. The flavor matches the look as well with just a bevy of flavors that range from simple/clean to complex/different. My favorites were the red snapper; the uni; the clam; the mackerel to say the least. It all ends with matcha and a simple almond dessert. They do have drinks available such as beer/sake/wine if you'd like also presented beautifully. Omakase only. Yes it's pricy (over 20,000 yen). Yep it's small. But man, it's so worth it. My meal of 2018.More

I booked this restaurant without having any idea of what I was getting into. It was an innocent last minute sushi booking that turned out to be one of the best meals of my life so far. The chef prepared one outstanding piece of sushi...art after another. We were asked at the start if there was anything we could not / would not eat, which was a great touch, and from there our journey into the world of amazing sushi began. I kid you not, this will be the BEST SUSHI of your life!More

Unbelievable. I eat out all the time. All dishes were wonderful but it was the best salmon roe I have eaten, the best abalone I have ever tried and the smoked Sush dish was creative and delicious. Very much an unknown treasure. Go there quickly...before it becomes impossible to book.More

Look no further for an amazing sushi experience in Tokyo. Sushi Hayakawa is 5-star sushi presented impressively, beautifully and uniquely. Easily the best sushi I've had the pleasure of eating and wouldn't be out of place ranked alongside some of the world's best restaurants. Secret...hidden location and no menu add to the appeal and experience - contrastingly staff are warm and inviting. As non-Japanese speaking we had cards to help illustrate what we were eating. Stunning variety of classics and unusual ingredients - most likely based around best produce available. Serving just a six-seat counter, the chefs work methodically to prepare each dish - almost like a performance art in itself. At roughly US $200 per head for full course + drinks, this is also outstanding value.More

From beginning to end my meal was unlike no other. Granted it is a bit difficult to locate the restaurant, but so is Heaven. And this was Heaven on plates. So many selections in the tasting menu, luckily they gave business size cards with the...fish and info. The staff is super attentive and the chef was informative and entertaining. I was fortunate to be handed a business card before I left as making a reservation can be difficult as well as locating the address online. But it is so SO worth it.More

In my more than 15 years of regular business trips to Tokyo and numerous sushi dinners, I rate Sushi Hayakawa as the very best so far. Superb food utilizing seasonal fish and seafood prepared with respect to highlight the best flavors. Service is impecable, friendly...with explanations about each dish by the chef owner or with very cleverly written information cards. All team members speak English.More

Having seen this place highly rated but still relatively undiscovered by tourists when doing my research we organised for our hotel to make a booking for us. Once the booking was confirmed they sent us a map with the details! The restaurant is located on...the 3rd floor of a random building and it has no signs. You then have to knock a random sign less plain steel door and then you enter. The restaurant is very small and is aesthetically pleasing. The Bonsai behind the chef was very cool. We were served by chef Hayakawa who was incredible from the moment we walked in. A very balanced and slow individually prepared serving method made the experience a very enjoyable one which enabled us to really enjoy every dish and had the dinner going close to three hours!Restaurants like Sukibashi Jiro can have you in and out in 30 minutes. My favourite dishes were his incredible fatty tuna sushi and his signature Hayakawa roll which included truffles! Having been to many of the high end sushi places in Ginza and greater Tokyo I can honestly say that this was my favourite sushi restaurant. We Paid around $650 AUD as a couple which included beers and sake for the duration of the meal. Check out my photos that I attached. From Hugo :)More

We love Tokyo for Food and have been fortunate to have Jiro Ono and other top sushi masters. We thought we would try off the beaten track and found out about Chef Hayakawa through Timeout's review. They were more than right...Chef Hayakawa-san is an imaginative...genius of the highest order. We're a little afraid to share this on Tripadvisor as we know more people will be coming. The Bar is small (only 6-7 seats) and some private restaurant areas. So book in advance. The location can be tough to find, a couple of blocks from Ebisu West Gate entrance, but Google Maps works well. Reminder go to the 5th Floor of the KT Building. What lies there is creative Sushi/Sashimi and other delicacies of the highest order. The Sushi card system in English is creative. Won't go into all the dishes, but the highlight for us was the Otoro (Fatty Tuna Cone with Foie Gras (yes Foie Gras!) Mind-blowlingly tasty. Chef Hayakawa is super friendly (unlike other Chefs) and his English is improving, he is kind and sweet. Sent us off at the door when were departing. Pricing very reasonable for this high quality at around $200 per person. Good luck and enjoy!More

This was our favorite meal during our two week trip to Japan and one of the best dining experiences that I have had anywhere. Each dish was fantastic and each came with a card in English describing the fish which was quite helpful. The recommended...sake was excellent. The chef is very friendly and warm and watching his mastery is something I won't soon forget.More

Choosing a sushi restaurant in Tokyo is daunting. There are sushi restaurants everywhere and so many guides telling you where to go. We looked at the Michelin guide, Time Out, TripAdvisor, etc. and finally chose Sushi Hayakawa from a review in Time Out. We booked...for 630pm same day and we're surprised that we were the only ones at the sushi bar when we arrived. We sat in front of sushi chef Hayakawa and watched him work his magic in the minimalist but beautiful and lovely space (6 seats at the bar). Chef Hayakawa's English was limited but he was funny and warm. We let him chose the full set for us and we were not disappointed. We loved everything - even the things we would have never ordered. And given that we felt that we had a 5 star experience but for the 2 of us, including 3 orders or sake, was under $400, we were extremely satisfied with the value. This spot is a hidden gem and I hope more people continue to seek it out.More

Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the
Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops
that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest
areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's
Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to
recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh
yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast,
Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool.
