Hotels near Mount Rigi

Known as the ‘Queen of the Mountains’, Mt. Rigi is an easy day trip from Lucerne. Here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Swiss Alps, visit a cheese farm, go hiking, visit the Kanzeli viewpoint, and even go skiing or sledding in the winter. Getting to the mountain is part of the fun, with the journey—that’s entirely free with a Swiss Travel Pass— involving a boat ride and a cog railway jaunt. Otherwise, have a hassle-free experience with a tour, with optional entrance to the Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths, a cruise along Lake Lucerne, or an additional visit to Mt. Pilatus.

    Amazing mountain scenery
This is another of those amazing mountain scenery trips, especially on a clear sunny day. Give yourself half a day to get here and spend some time at the top. Depending on where you are based, Mount Rigi can be reached by various means. It's close to Lucerne and can also be reached with a train and bus ride from Zurich main station - get to Vitznau station and then take the cogwheel car up to Rigi. All covered by the Swiss Travel Pass if you have that. You can wander around at the top for a while and take in the views. There are plenty of benches if you want to do a lunch stop here. Suggestion for the trip back down, if you have time, is return on the other cogwheel line which goes to Arth-Goldau. From there, make your way to Schwyz (by train) and then a bus to Stoos. Mount Stoos is then reached by the steepest funicular railway in the world. Two great mountains in a day!
Dear mahatinu, thank you for this detailed explanation and great review. With its different means of transport on both sides of the mountain, the stunning views from various spots and so many hiking options we are sure Mount Rigi is worth its nickname Queen of the Mountains. Beauty at its best
Journey to Mount Rigi in the cog wheel train from Vitznau was a great experience. Climbing very steeply, exposing the breathtaking vistas through gaps in tree canopies and some alpine cottages was a marvellous experience. On the way we had the choice of getting off at any station and trekking to the next and rejoining another train paving the opportunity to take pictures from different levels of the route. Further up we went, prettier was the horizon we saw. From the Rigi Kulm station the tracks led to the summit with more lookout points giving a magnificent view of the whole region. The lookout tower which I believe was a Swisscom communication antenna site nevertheless provided a sky-high view of the summit and beyond and the lake Lucerne below was miniscule by the sheer area one could see to the naked eye.
Hi 307kamalp, wow, thank you for this stunning description of your impressions. It describes the experience on the Queen of the Mountains better than we can put into words. The absolutely unique 360-degree view of Rigi Kulm is something you have to see for yourself to appreciate its breathtaking beauty. Did you know that with good visibility you can see 13 lakes, 24 of 26 cantons, 620 Alpine peaks and as far as Germany and France? Best regards, Ragna, Customer Service

    Impressive view
Mont Rigi is a very famous spot of tourism in Switzerland. When you get there, you directly get to understand why. You drive up with a nice and comfortable train. Already during g the drive you get an amazing view over the lake. From the top, you have a 360° panorama, which is lovely. If you feel like it, you can walk down on foot (the end is very, very steep, though). Otherwise, you can take the train back. It's definitely a place to spend at least half a day.
Hello YannR2828, you are right, Mount Rigi definitively deserves the name "Queen of the Mountains", as you have an unique and absolutely astonishing 360 ° panorama at the top. But also its innumerable possibilities, wether on foot or by train, also make a trip to Mount Rigi something special. See you soon, Ragna, Customer Service

Beautiful, scenic, and easy to navigate area. Fun trip up on train and neat hiking trails
Took the train to the top and enjoyed the bites of waterfalls, animals, and the mountains. Was a bit foggy when we got up to the top but still a fun adventure. Took a hike on some various trails, tied an alpine cheese farm and picked up the train at a lower station. Truly a fun and low key day in the mountains.
Hello melissacD7730MX, did you know that there are more than 120 km hiking trails to explore on the Queen of the Mountains? That is what makes Mount Rigi so special, one can easily hike, wether short, long, challenging or easy and hop on our mountain railways at another station. All inlcuded in the Rigi day ticket. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, sunny greetings, Ragna, Customer Service
