Marked by the Tatra (called Tatry locally) Mountains that form the country’s southern border with Slovakia, Southern Poland consists of three Viovodships (Provinces): Opole, Silesian and Lesser Poland (Malopolska). Many beautiful medieval castles are still found in the region, including Moszna in Opole and the massive 400-room Ksiaz in Silesia. Lesser Poland is home to bustling Krakow, the country’s third-largest city. The region’s mountains and green areas are perfect for outdoor adventure.

Just a few miles from the Slovak border in south central Poland, Zakopane is a resort town in the Tatra Mountains, popular with skiers in winter and with hikers and climbers year-round. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Zakopane grew into Poland’s most visible art colony, a hotbed of culture ended by Soviet influence after World War II. Ever seen a movie or TV show that takes place in Austria? Then you’ve probably seen Ellmau. Charming villages, idyllic scenery and an 18th-century parish church make Ellmau a popular filming location for directors who want a setting that’s quintessentially Austrian. For regular folks, Ellmau’s draw is its proximity to the Wilder Kaiser mountains, where the hiking trails and ski slopes are equally spectacular.

At Christmastime, the entire city of Valkenburg seems to sparkle with festive light. The annual underground Christmas market is a hallmark of the city, lasting from mid-November through December 23. It’s held in the Velvet Caves, a maze of 12th-century passageways that lies beneath the remains of Valkenburg’s hilltop castle. The caves and castle draw visitors year-round. Valkenburg is a biking city. It's a great base for cycling tours and is a two-time stage finish site for the Tour de France.

The southernmost of the Western Fjord counties, Rogaland is also home to many beautiful beaches and islands. Of the area’s fjords, Lysefjord is the most famous, its 25 magnificent miles marked by narrow passages along steep vertical drops. Preikestolen, Rogaland’s most visited attraction, is a breathtaking cliff nearly 2,000 feet above the water. Kjeragbolten, a huge boulder wedged in a mountain crevasse, is another Lysefjord highlight. Cruises begin at Stavenger, the area’s biggest town.

Dubai is a destination that mixes modern culture with history, adventure with world-class shopping and entertainment.
