We had a problem with a large chain of hotels in Palancia and decided to find somewhere else. What a find. We thought this was a special place away from the crowds. It is half way from Palancia and Santander. The room was quirky just what we like. The restaurant was great. €18 for the menu of the day. The staff were so helpful. We will stay here again. Parking although not actually secure was safe.
Arrived as the sun was setting, first impression - what a lovely old hotel. We checked in and were shown to our room which had a very strange configuration - two singles on a mezinine floor and a space downstairs (too small to call a room) with a bathroom to one side. I had visions of getting up in the night falling down the very steep mezinine stairscase and breaking my neck. The receptionist was happy to move us to room 20 which had a more conventional layout. Unfortunatley one blind was broken, one of the lights didn't work but worst of all there was a "booming" sound (like a pump running) that sounded for 30 seconds every 40 minutes, under or very close to room 20. Never mind we thought "it can't be any worse than the ferry, lets eat" We went to the cafeteria, got a beer and asked for the menu........ "We don't sell food, only crisps and biscuits". So its a bar, not a cafeteria. Disappointed we made our way to the restaurant, At last, the redeeming feature of the hotel, a 'menu del dia' - soup or salad, chicken and mushrooms in sauce or cod followed by flan. The chicken would have benefitted from a bowl of rice but overall very tasty and at €12pp including a bottle of red, good value. Conclusion: food was good, staff friendly and helpful, hotel needs some money spending on it, but overpriced at €70 per night. …
Great historical location with an active working environment in part of the buildings- guided tours are available but we missed out as we had to move on and had too little time here. The rooms are beamed and have been renovated to a good standard but are so 'quirky' that we laughed at many [in a good way]. The bar area was good as was the wifi reception. Very clean and well organised.
The grounds, location reception area were all lovely and welcoming. The rooms, I realise it's an old monastery, but they could have been a lot better. Found the beds on the mezzanine floor too hot at night, as they were in the eaves. We were glad we didn't stay during really hot weather. The choice at breakfast was very disappointing as well, an expensive extra. Overall didn't live up to expectations, sorry.
We were disappointed by this establishment. It says it is an inn or "posada" but its price was 50% higher than a four star hotel in the capital of its province, where we stayed the day before. It was our choice considering its location close to the Monasterio of Santa Maria la Real. It has no parking area, only the possibility of parking outdoors, so a problem with carrying suitcases on an irregular floor. The worst aspect was the room, small, with a dim bath where movement was difficult, and an elevated claustrophobic bed, extremely hot without air conditioning. Opening the window let enter kitchen smoke and fried odors. The reception personnel was helpful and kind, but recognized their impossibility to fix the problems surprising unhappy guests.
