The road signs for the inn point in the wrong direction, but as there was only one other option this was not really a problem and it enabled us to see more of South Uist. The inn did not serve snacks or drinks before 3.00pm and the restaurant opened at 5.30 pm when we visited. Gravel paths surround the hotel so it's advisable to drop off luggage directly from the car at the entrance. The views from our tiny room were spectacular, as were the sunsets (see photos). The rooms here are very, very small yet the owners have put in unnecessary trouser presses in every room that occupy valuable space. WHY? I chose lamb shank in red wine jus for my evening meal and was very disappointed. Red wine jus it was not, it was tinned provencial sauce. We were woken the following morning by the music that was playing in the dining room and was not a good start to the day. However, it is the perfect location for seeing the whole of South Uist and Elaine, the lovely manageress there, could not have been more helpful in directing us around the island and ensuring that the rest of our stay there was as comfortable as possible. The hotel is very near to Eriskay, the island where "Whisky Galore" actually happened (not the film) and was well worth a visit. The nearby beach was charming and deserted; if it wasn't for the very slight chill in the air, one would would have thought it was the Bahamas (see photos). I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and is well worth a visit, particularly so if one is a keen walker or cyclist. However, I am unsure how well the hotel would run without Elaine who ran it with charm, skill and precision.

On May 20, I had a memorable lunchtime experience at The Polochar. Meals at its restaurant are preceded by driving through scenery of the stark, remote and dramatic type often featured as the backdrop to car trials in Top Gear.
The Polochar’s location, at one end of a long, sweeping beach, looking across an often dark and moody seascape, is a gift in itself. The scene is set. Then the sun emerges from its cloud cloak and the scene becomes one of translucent uplift.
In the restaurant, there is a feeling of cosines and comfort against the wilderness. I started my meal with a creamy Cullen skink, infused with the sweet smokiness of haddock. Sweet and tender pieces of baby potatoes emerged from the rich sea of soup which I mopped up greedily with fresh and crumbly whole meal bread.
My next course was lobster linguini with a side of fresh, local steamed vegetables. Well, the lobster was tender, sweet and meaty. Make sure you get a metal picker as well as a claw cracker. You’ll be keen to extract every fibre of delicious flesh from the crustacean on your plate. The linguini, sauce and all, brought the dish together. Ask for additives, as I did for cheese. Freshly grated, an intense hard variety which really lifted my pasta. The steamed veg, well-presented, flavour-preserved and hot, well, I could have eaten a triple serve.
Food to live for.

Response from Polochar Inn, General Manager at Polochar Inn
Responded Jul 23, 2021
Dear O749PLpeterd, Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us. Is (almost) always a pleasure to read comments and reviews form guests, and I have to say, we all enjoyed yours in particular! The lobster linguine is indeed one of our best selling dish and given how fresh our shellfish is, we are not surprised you have enjoyed it so much. Thank you again and we hope to see you on your next visit to the islands.

We chose the Polochar Inn for the Uist part of our Outer Hebrides trip using an Itison voucher which offered great value.

The team are doing a fantastic job, making you feel welcome and taking every precaution to ensure Covid-19 procedure compliance. Our room was to the front of the hotel and had stunning views to Barra

The room was spacious and clean with nice bedding and towels. The bathroom had a large walk in shower. As is common in most hotels just now our room was not made up during our stay but reception was always available if we required anything

We ate in the restaurant both nights and were not disappointed with the quality of the food and the size of the portions. It was fresh and very tasty. The bar has a good selection of drinks and the staff made sure we were well looked after. Breakfast was served in the restaurant and it is made to order due to Covid restrictions around buffets. The selection was excellent and really set us up for the day exploring the lovely islands of South Uist, Benbecula, & North Uist.

There are some great walks near the hotel and it has a stunning beach just a few steps away.

All the staff were pleasant and very helpful and made it an enjoyable stay.

This hotel is situated in a peaceful location overlooking the islands with seabirds and otters visible from your bedroom window. The manager, Ryan, and his staff are very attentive and welcoming with customer service being of a high standard.

We stayed for three nights and found the rooms to be well finished and the beds comfortable, with little details like the Harris Tweed covered bedheads adding to the ambience.

The breakfast was plentiful and varied and the evening meals to a high standard being both well presented and very tasty. The chef certainly knows his stuff, in particular the scallops were the best I have ever had.

Due to its location it is beneficial to have a car although we flew into Barra and took the ferry across to South Uist. A great experience. We also made use of the local bus service there being a stop within easy reach of the hotel.

In summary a great place to stay. Keep up the good work Ryan. I hope we will be back.

The historic Inn's beautiful location by the rocks at the end of a picturesque beach makes it ideal for taking walks. Elaine made us feel most welcome and made a special effort to acquire non-allergenic pillows for our room, as we had mentioned an allergy to traditional feather down bedding. The staff were all well trained and polite. We thoroughly enjoyed a fine dinner including scallops and lobster, as well as a full Scottish breakfast with hand-made tatty scones. We loved the use of Harris tweed in the bedroom design. We certainly hope to return to this fine old Hebridean inn.

Disliked · If you need to use a hairdryer, you have to ask for it at reception, which is a bit odd. The rooms are wee, and have no fridge, but the views make up for this if you make sure your window faces the sea (I think room 33 may have the best view for a double). The "kettle" is a strange contraption, although Elaine explained it all to us.

The location of the hotel is amazing. We had a room with a sea view and it was so lovely to wake up to views of the sea from our window, and really relaxing to hear the sounds of the sea and wind from our room. The hotel is really remote, so you can hear the sea, wind and nothing else! It’s refreshing not to hear the sound of traffic.
As the hotel is remote its advisable to book dinner at their restaurant for your stay. The food was delicious- our favourites were the sea bass, the gnocchi, the lobster pasta, scallops starter… and the breakfast was great too. If you go for dessert the cranachan is delicious!
There is a lovely snug area to take your drinks after dinner with nice sofas and heaters.
We felt very welcome at the hotel and we were really looked after by the staff who are so friendly and provided an excellent service.
The hotel is in a great location to use as a base to explore Eriskay, benbecula and North Uist, where there are lots of beautiful beaches and walks to experience.
Or if you are travelling around the islands it’s a great stop before travelling onto Barra.
This is a really special place to stay because of the lovely staff and beautiful location. It was rainy and windy for all of our stay and we still loved it!!

We had an amazing stay at the Polochar Inn. We had a superior room with fantastic views across the sea to Barra. The room was spotless and very comfortable, although the towels provided could be doing with being replaced, but that is a very minor issue overall.
The general manager Elaine is an absolute treasure and a great asset to the hotel, she is very friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable about all of the local areas and attractions to visit.
We ate dinner on 2 nights at the hotel, the food was delicious, very nicely presented , and great service by Elaine yet again.
Full Scottish breakfast was wonderful and a great start to our day.
We would say that dealing by email with the owner was difficult at times, but don’t let this put you off , as previously mentioned, the general manager Elaine makes sure that your visit and experience will be delightful
We would highly recommend the Polochar Inn

I was booked into the Polocher Inn for only one night in February and ended up staying for three due to a ferry problem! Honestly I couldn’t recommend being stuck anywhere nicer!!! Due to the time of year the Inn was very quiet but was also warm and welcoming, I found my host Elaine to be friendly, very professional and extremely helpful, really made my stay extremely comfortable. The hotel is very fresh and tastefully decorated recently with a lovely bar/restaurant with gorgeous views over to Barra.
The Inn position is perfectly situated right on the waterside and is a great base for exploring the islands. There is a supermarket and a few other restaurants within a short drive away although the excellent food at the Inn makes them unnecessary.
My room was the standard double room which still was lovely and also with an incredible view. I got a peek at the premier double rooms which were gorgeous…next time!!

We stayed at the Polochar Inn for two nights on our trip around the Hebrides and we can not recommend it enough for accommodation and for food. Perfect location, beautiful scenery and the added bonus of Max the Collie to play with. Our room was the small double but was comfortable enough for our two nights with lovely Highland Company toiletries in the bathroom. The staff were extremely friendly and definitely the best breakfast we have had on our trip. You’ll also meet Max ‘the littlest hobo’ collie who loves a walk along the beach with new friends. We can’t wait to come back

We are staying for 3 nights to explore Hebridean routes on bike, car & ferry. This hotel is run by our lovely host who goes above and beyond as is our experience (very knowledgeable and guides you if you are new to the area).

One of the best breakfasts we have ever had in a b&b type stay. Amazing options to choose from (we are veg. many options available).

Ours is a comfy double room with good WiFi connectivity considering this is an idyllic and remote yet breathtaking location. Very comfy bed for good nights sleep.

Chef was a lovely bloke running a rather busy kitchen in the evening restaurant which is quite popular with the locals(that says it all).

We explored Uist all over keeping this as our base(in our EV Car- reasonably connected with nearby charging points through CPS ranging from 6 miles Eriskay to Cothrom 11miles(50/43kv chargers).

This is the starting point for amazing white sandy beaches right on the shores where Polo-Chara is set in!

Will definitely come back.
