Bukit Lawang is a peaceful village in the province of North Sumatra. The location is a main access point into the green heart of Sumatra: the Leuser Ecosystem. You will have the unique chance to view rehabilitated and wild orangutans in a guided tour through the lush forests of the region. Staying in the Ecolodge Bukit Lawang is not only a unique experience but also a personal statement in support of sustainable tourism. The facility provides an unprecedented opportunity to be immersed in North Sumatra’s unique rainforest environment while directly contributing to the conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan – with proceeds donated to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme. The Ecolodge Bukit Lawang was established to complement and serve as an outlet for the activities of the Bohorok Environmental Education Centre. Herein we aim to increase awareness towards biodiversity conservation and the implementation and management of proper ecotourism.

I stayed Ecolodge during summer school holiday with my family to encounter Orang Utang. I did not expect much as the location is quite remote area, but found that Ecolodge was not just eco friendly accommodation but also pretty cosy accommodation.

I think they provide best quality facility and hospitality among accommodations in Bukit Lawang.

Staffs accommodated all of our request in timely manner. They provided us connecting room at new building, and there was a charming loft space which my daughter liked it. Foods were mainly Indonesian food selection but it was tasty.

As they provide eco friendly environment, there is no WIFI in guest rooms(WIFI available at restaurant), No hair dryer, no TV and no Mini Bar and no AC. But to enjoy nature, it did not matter for us at all. We can enjoy sunrise, river view and sounds from our balcony and in the night it’s just nice temperatures without AC cause it’s surrounded by forest and river.

Hotel staff helped us to arrange Orang Utang tour, and we could find two Orang Utangs and a monkey, which was awesome experience!

I recommend Ecolodge for those who want to find comfortable accommodation in Bukit Lawang.

First night we had an orange otan room: light not working, shower not working. Second night we were in the mail building near the service desk: much better room. Food is reasonable, coffee good. A young man and a slightly lesser young man tried to rob us of 600.000 rupiahs. My wife asked what the prices were of massages, and they quoted a price three times the price. When I asked he tried that again. Unfortunately for him I did read what the real prices was. Outrageous. Although not bad, we prefer Tangkahan, Mega Inn. Jungle track there was authentic as were the animals we came across.

Very basic rooms without aircon but noisy fan in hot and humid location. Good staff and reasonable priced and quality meals. Unfortunately the hotels across the river and the local people are very noisy noisy till 1 - 2 AM playing loud music and talking, which disturbed our sleep in the hot room even more. They have no respect in this regard for other visitors and although the hotel manager tried his best, he acknowledged that it is and has been a big problem.

Well maintained property. Original setup with all bamboo lunch and dinner.
Excellent food and drinks (including good coffee 😃). Staff is very friendly. The lodge has a fully integrated set of guides - organisation is flexible, friendly and the trips we can all recommend.
Room is spacey and clean. (We had an orangutans room)

Just spent 6 days in Bukit Lawang at the Eco Lodge, on a yoga retreat. The rooms at the Eco Lodge were excellent, with a view of the river, and groups of monkeys visiting in the trees nearby. The staff at the lodge were fantastic, very friendly and helpful. We trekked into the jungle after yoga on most days and our guides Idriss and Jampo were amazing. They were thoughtful, friendly and dedicated to ensuring that we had the best experience. The experience was so fantastic, that we will be returning next year!

Ecolodge is perfectly located at the start of the jungle trek to see orangutans in the wild. Basic but very comfortable accommodation, and a great restaurant by the river. I highly recommend our jungle guides Sutris and At, who gave us a wonderful experience in the Sumatran jungle.

The Lodge is acceptable and clean, the overnight jungle tour is amazing. But the restaurant is not such nice. Three of four menus are sold out (before main dinner time). The waiter don't understand anything and laughs all the time.

We had a beautiful stay in eco lodge bukit lawang. The lodge is located next to river on the edge of jungle, we had an amazing view from our room for the forest and from balcony you can see the monkeys and hear the sound of jungle.( the monkeys like jumping on the balcony as well) It was an undescribeable experience. The lodge is very modern and new,the room was comfortable and the bathroom is also nice and clean. The personal is very friendly and helpful. In the Restaurant has a good selection of delicious food. It was really special having breakfast while we were hearing the noise the river and saw a snake on the tree next to our table. We spent a beautiful time here in the real wild.( and we saw orangutans with their babies, gibbons, peacock and other animals as the most cutiest Thomas Leaf monkeys as well)

This deserves 4.5 to be honest! Stayed 2 nights for our hike into the rain forest. Perfect location - very warm welcome from Heru - prepping us for our excursions. Monkeys around the grounds were great fun to watch, even if the staff were frustrated by them. The room is very simple, but then it is an eco lodge. We had hot water and electricity and ate well in the restaurant on site. There were other places to eat nearby but the staff provided everything we needed at the Lodge. The cold drinks after our hike were so welcome! My only niggle was that the room could have done with somewhere to unpack and sort/dry some of our kit, but this and the lack of air-conditioning didn't stop us getting a great night's sleep.
