Detailed Reviews
To put in short, an amazing grounded yet mesmerising experience. The property is a heaven when comes to ambience, services, food, and experience.
The staff, were extremely friendly and helpful to ensure our comfort. Nestled in nature ambience, anytime, we will prefer if we again come to Kumarakom.
Just some negative thoughts round up only to, the air conditioning if the room we selected was poor. Thanks to the already amazing climate, we were fine. But on a customer perspective , a better experience could have been ensured.

We had stayed at this property for 1 night in December, 2006 and were very impressed by the grounds. It's perfect for large families (we were 10 of us including a child) and for children who can have a great time in the huge compound.
The food was ok.
We had booked 4 rooms out of which we didn't like 2. So would suggest that visitors only book after checking which rooms they are opting for because the cottages are a far cry from the 'heritage' tag. But there is potential to have a good time here with a big family.

We spent a part of our Christmas vacations last year at this heritage home. We had booked the annex rooms but they were comfortable with a small sit-out. The facility is next to the boat jetty which is a definite value add. The staff is courteous and the service is good. Food was also good and they were willing to customize to cater to the needs of our children. There is plenty of space for kids to run around and also a small kids play area
The heritage house is also beautiful with an open courtyard in the middle
All in all it was a pleasant stay

We booked the property one month in advance, there was no contact from the property any time after booking. Restaurant is not open. Tv not working in the three rooms we checked. By afternoon the place will be swarmed with mosquitoes till night. Be prepared with some repellents. Service from staff is very poor. They were simply standing and looking when we carried our luggage to our room. Its high time they changed taps n showers. Bathrooms of two adjacent rooms are connected in the top part which is very awkward. They don't provide blankets. Just a small sized cotton bedsheet which is inadequate if you are using AC.

We had our family get-together at Tharavadu Resort in the first week of April. The rooms are well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and the food is delicious. The highlight of the stay was the sunset boat cruise. Tharavadu Resort is an ideal venue for organizing small events like ours.

The website for Tharavad Heritage Homes has links to Tharavad Houseboats. We were persuaded to look up Tharavad and book through them only because they are mentioned in Lonely Planet. We were a group of eight adults and booked through them. Never again - because we were not mentally prepared for the absolute shambles that followed!
Firstly, they don't own the houseboat. We arrived at the appointed time at Kumarakom and then discovered that they had not arranged our boat! This despite several telephone contacts after sending the advance deposit to secure the booking. Only after we were in his office did the guy get on the telephone and try to set up a boat for us. The boat he got for us was called Kingfisher.
Kingfisher was shabby and dirty. A big disappointment as soon as we clambered aboard. There was no evidence that this boat had ever been cleaned or even dusted, leave alone getting scrubbed. There was no soap on board to wash hands. Towels were not provided in any of the four cabins that we had on the boat. Of course there was no toilet paper. There was not enough crockery and cutlery on board for eight people and we were reduced to washing cups for tea. The boat was infested with vermin and cockroaches. The bathrooms were in disrepair. All this despite Tharavad being warned by our Indian hosts who made the booking, on our behalf, that the group comprised six visitors from abroad.
An hour into the trip, we had an enforced stoppage for two hours while they tried to repair a broken air conditioner in one of the cabins. Thus we missed two hours of valuable daylight time which could have been usefully spent on an enjoyable cruise (if we were not on this Tharavad Heritage Home's Kingfisher craft).
Altogether this was a total nightmare from start to finish and one we would not wish to foist on our worst enemies. We have since given feed back to Lonely Planet too.

It is true that Theravadu is a beautiful 1870s style house built along the river close to the Kumarkom Jetty. It's rooms - in the heritage building itself- are very nicely appointed indeed.
However, do not necessarily expect to get what you paid for if you book a room online through any of the booking agencies. At least this was our experience.
We arrived on Jan 1 having booked and paid (well in advance) for two nights in the heritage building itself but what we got was something quite unexpected for the first night - a stinking, mosquito infested, concrete box with a narrow bed, fan with not control settings, dirty bathroom in what they call their "annex" .
Our rooms had obviously been double booked and immediately the management blamed their own mistake on the booking agency (Cleartrip.com). What happened next is mind boggling.
As said, we were placed in the annex room for the first night and had to ascertain for ourselves ( by consulting their website) that the accommodation we were given was more than 1300 rupees less than what we had paid for online.
They did not make clear it was cheaper and when I challenged them on this they then said I would have to retrieve the difference from the booking agency. We were moved into the accommodation we had booked and paid for the second day - which was a world apart from what we had to endure the first night.
However, when it came to settling the final bill the fight was on.
We were determined to only pay the difference between what we had paid for and what we owed ( ie. Food costs). They insisted we pay the total amount and then try and retrieve 1300 rupees from the broker ourselves afterwards.
I suspect they had got away with this elaborate "sleight of hand" before.
It was a very stressful, protracted and tiresome experience to be put through especially after we had endured a sleepless and disappointed first night.
Beware of the office staff! I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.
A beautiful Homestay with good food in a lovely location for sure. An experience, however, spoiled by poor management ( to put it kindly)
