You shouldn’t really think of this as a hotel. More as a rented villa with staff. And what incredible staff! Seven of them for the two of us! And every one of them a perfectionist!

There are just two bedrooms and, although they do book these separately, I’m sure it works best as a single booking. In fact, I really can’t imagine it working very well, shared with strangers. We splashed out and had a room each instead of taking the twin room, as we would have done anywhere else. It would also be perfect for a group of four, travelling together. But even with the luxury of two bedrooms, the overall pricing compared quite well with some other resorts where we had booked single villas with private plunge pools, which seems to me the fairest comparison.

Every aspect of the stay was in a class of its own. The building (a traditional house reassembled on site) is gorgeous, with gleaming polished wood interiors and huge open bathrooms, dotted with plants and statues. The gardens are immaculate, with a couple of ladies constantly weeding the lawn or picking up the last stray dead leaf. The pool is a very good size and one of the loveliest I know. (If only granite and marble were so readily available in Europe to imitate it!) The views of the lake from two sides are glorious.

And then there’s the food. Babu, the chef, is a genius. Time and again, he produced the best ever version of something we thought we knew well. And here I don’t just mean his Masala Dosas and Biryanis, but also his take on a Salade Nicoise.

Vinod, the manager (if that’s the right word here) was wonderful host. Discreet (important in this intimate environment) but also immensely attentive, with helpful suggestions for low key activities such as an evening boat ride and a tuk tuk trip to the lively Cherthala market. They also had bikes for explorations of the local terrain. We loved his delicate small touches, like the napkin rings he made freshly for every meal out of leaves and flowers from the gardens.

We stayed for three nights, but you could easily settle in for a really long stay and just paint, write or carry on with any such endeavour, safe in the knowledge that every care and humdrum necessity would be magic-ed away.

On second thoughts, don’t do that. It might stop us booking for next year!

We enjoyed a very relaxing week here in March at the end of a busy business trip. The two bedroom property, a traditional wooden Keralan house, is very tastefully decorated in a minimalist way that suits the Keralan climate. It has a beautifully landscaped private garden which is tucked away in a very quiet location on the edge of Lake Venbanan
We booked the whole villa, although we only needed one room, which gave us our privacy.

The manager, Vinod & his staff of 3 ladies, offer a very discreet but friendly service, and you really do feel cherished. “It has that old school feeling that “nothing is too much trouble”. Which is amazing, as it’s done in such a low key way.
Delicious food, is freshly cooked to order and tailored to your taste. Vinod, the manager, worked in Italy for two years and had already gained experience working in an exclusive resort, so he has a great palete for blending just the right amount of ingredients, it is a real skill which shines through with each plate of food.
The presentation of each meal was always a delight, with simple but beautiful table settings. All were exquisitely arranged with exotic flowers from the garden.
The outside bathroom is perfect for that climate, perhaps a little tricky if you have mobility issues as there are steps down to the loo & shower but it is well lit and very spacious.

The bed was very comfortable and the bed linen is super quality cotton.

The bedrooms have air conditioning. The house & verandah have fans. There is a swimming pool, loungers & hammocks to enjoy.
Without a doubt, the best place we have ever stayed in India. We will definitely be coming back again when we are next in Kerala.Thank you Vinod and Anita. 5 stars well earned.
FYI. As many hotels in this area have been closed for 2yrs due to Covid lockdowns, most have not renewed their liquor licences which are costly. Hence the lack of availability of imported wines. If you do like to drink wine it would be sensible to contact Vinod in advance so he can make arrangements.

Ignore the crows, escape the crowds and just enjoy being enveloped in the beauty of Vismaya.
Everything about this wonderful building, the situation, the quiet and unobtrusive care is perfect. My husband said ‘I could retire here’ - if only.
Thank you so much Vinod, it was so lovely to see you again. Thank you Babu for the delicious food which we enjoyed at every meal - there is no need for a menu, just let Babu cook whatever is fresh on that day.
Thank you also to all the girls who look after the pool, the garden, our room and the laundry.
Get up early in the morning to see the sunrise from the jetty and in the evening relax in a hammock to watch the setting sun, it is magical.
We loved our second stay with you and hope to be back again later in the year.

We have just left Vismaya after a two night stay and although our time in Kerala is only half way through, it will definitely be a highlight!
It is a magical place, with two fabulous rooms and a stunning outlook.
Vinod gives the most discreet service possible and Babu cooks delicious food. The napkins always wrapped with a beautiful flower and table decorations too.
Even the bill was rolled with a flower!
Thank you to you all, we will be back!
Trish and Dan.

My Husband and I stayed at Vismaya this Christmas and had an amazing relaxing time. The entire property is beautiful, well maintained and gives you the local experience of staying in Kerala. The house in itself is almost 200 year old property which has been modified to modern day needs keeping in mind the originality of the place. The location of the property adds to the personal experience. Thanks to Vinod, an out of the world host, and Babu, the food God indeed!, for ensuring we have a relaxing and rejuvenating trip!

If you plan on Kerala, do keep Vismaya in mind.

Vismaya is a hidden gem!! The service was top class and the food was literally the best we've had in Kerala. This magical place is one of the most private, scenic and relaxing experience we've had and the service has been simply perfect with the team looking after your every need. The food variety and original tastes prepared by chef Babu was just tantalizing!! Combined with the unbeatable island-like scenary literally surrounded by backwaters made this an unbeatable experience. It's hard to say which part of this experience was best, because everything has been perfect. Thank you so much team vismaya for a wonderful time. Ann and Arun.

If you stay nowhere else in Kerala, stay at Vismaya!
Located on the Backwaters, with access for swimming & for meeting the fishermen who work daily nearby, the bungalow is beautifully appointed, tranquil & managed by Vinod & his colleagues with great style & profesionalism. Vismaya is both close to the sights & also far away enough to provide a calm & very comfortable stay. It’s a gem!

We live in Kerala and have stayed at a few hotels in the area all of which have been excellent, so it was with a little trepidation that we booked a stay at Vismaya.
We were not disappointed. It is one of the most beautiful properties we have ever stayed at. The reconstructed 400 old villa sits in the one of the most enviable positions on Vembenad Lake.
It was beautiful, peaceful, so relaxing.
The staff, led expertly by Manager Vinod, looked after us incredibly well and the food was delicious.
A big thank you to you all for a wonderful weekend. We will be back!

We had a tantalisingly brief stay since our inbound flight was moved back- so our arrival from the noise and chaos of Mumbai was after dark. We were immediately enveloped in a mood of gentle, simple elegance. Our evening meal on the candlelight terrace was delicious - with impeccable service.
We woke at dawn to find daylight revealed the true beauty of the place - water hyacinth drifted slowly past as the fishermen made their way out onto the waters.
The building itself is just stunning with wonderfully carved dark wood and a gorgeous infinity pool .
We wished we could have stayed longer.

Word’s don’t really cover the experience of Vismaya, from the moment you step into the property you will start to relax, although there are activities to book, you will be overcome by the serenity of the property and its position on the lake. The property is stunningly beautiful, the attention to detail, from the service by Vinod and his team to the flowers on the dining table will make your heart skip. The service we received was first class, well above the price point and better than the leading resorts in this area. Vinod is a hospitality master, there when you need him and quietly getting on with business the rest of the time from morning to evening. The food and dining experience again was first class, with many options to choose from tailored to your wishes. I can’t really express how this place made us feel, my husband and I have traveled all over the world and this is by far the best example of how to look after guests, I did shed a tear when we left and we will return. ❤️

The price looks incorrect. I think the price ranges from Rs18,000 - Rs 28,000 a right for the whole villa (2 double bedrooms)
