Sagana Resort was perfect for a last minute surfing holiday - only managed to stay for 3 nights but everything was perfect. Sagana is located right at Cloud 9, where a few more properties are now lined up along the coast, but it's quiet and peaceful in this part of the island - which you really get to appreciate when perched up in the open-air, thatch-roofed viewing area/extension of Sagana's restaurant, looking out over the reef and surf.

Sagana is deservedly well known for its food - great fresh fruit salad & pancakes to provide enough fuel for the day & great choices from the changing daily menu for dinner to replenish the body after a day of kicking back in the hammock or trying to stand up on a surfboard.

It's all pretty laid back (as you'd expect in Siargao) but it's also no trouble for Gerry or Susan (your hosts) to organise anything - surf board hire, surf lessons (with a former local champion, no less), news on events at the local feista (late Sept) and info on running around the island (8.3 km round trip from Sagana - Siargao - Sagana ..... only recommended in the cooler part of the day!)

I was originally a bit worried about the lack of ATMs on the island & limited ability to use credit cards, so it's quiet good that Sagana (& other resorts on the island) just let you run a tab for all drinks and pay with credit card or cash at the end.

All too easy at Sagana.

This place is amazing,

we stayed in a cute cottage looking straight out to cloud 9...
the bed is comfy and you sleep under a net to keep out the mozzies
the staff organise anything and everything you need, i hired a board for the whole week, my gf had surf lessons... we hire motorbikes, went fishing, island hopping toured around the island... really felt at home here compared to anywhere else we went in the philippines.

getting up early and surfing, having an arvo sleep... what a life

and the food... OH MY GOD... breakfast lunches and 3 course dinners... wow...

Thanks Gerry, Susan, Lilly, Edna, Marni, Naoki and the rest of the staff

Coming here was the best part of our trip to the philippines

Did just three nights here in October...we got one of the two cottages with AC which was nice...surf was going off! The REEF surf team was staying there and ripping up the waves each day...Location is right there at cloud 9.

Food? Wow best during my 3 week stay in the philippine! Whether is was breakfast, lunch, or dinner it was fantastic!

Cottage was clean and nice with very comfortable best.

Gerry, Susan and their entire staff was fantastic.

Hey they have a pool too!

Wireless internet work great from my cottage

This is a pure surfers' resort and could be OK at the right time of year for surfers who are willing to pay the high so-called all in price and put up with the terrible access road which tricycle rickshaws wouldn't even attempt after heavy rain. In February we had virtually non stop rain, mountainous seas with no possibility of snorkelling or kayaking. A planned trip through the mangroves was aborted because no boatmen would go out in the rain.
We found the rate of 600 pesos/day to be high for the facilities and meals provided (1 egg with breakfast, 1 course lunch, 2 course dinner, no drinking water except at dinner, no use of kayaks or available ocean swimming or snorkelling)
We left as soon as we could get flights back to Cebu.

Response from susifishgirl, Owner at Sagana Resort

Dear Barry, I'm sorry the weather was so rotten during the time you were there, some wet seasons are worse than others and obviously you got the worst of it. As far as the roads are concerned we have been imploring the Govt for a long time to help but due to political issues we have been left out in the rain (literally). On the resort issues again i apologise as you are meant to get 3 courses for dinner and although lunch is only one course we have never had a complaint before regarding the size. I will investigate all on my return to the resort next week. Kind Regards Sagana Resort

I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively, with family and friends, from cities to villages to beach paradises but in October I found my number one destination.

Sagana resort, on the island of Siargao.

I travelled here with 5 of my best mates on the way home from a wedding, searching for waves and some much needed time off before all making the long journey home to our busy lives and young families.

From the minute the plane landed I knew we had found something special. No hassles, big smiles and the humidity in the air that makes your thongs slip off your feet as you walk across the tarmac.

We were greeted by one of the drivers from sagana, who took us straight to the resort, approximately 45 minutes. We were greeted by the most amazing owners, Gerry and Susan and were immediately made to feel like home.

The grounds and the rooms were perfect for what we needed. It had that Swiss family Robinson feel but with enough Mod Cons to still ensure you were comfortable.

We scored some waves, drank way to many beers and ate some of the most amazing food.

It was the slow pace and relaxed attitude that Gerry and Susan are blessed with that just filtered through the entire resort and in to the people that were there. Exactly what we all needed and appreciated the most.

As we sat on the beach one afternoon over a few beers as the sun went down we tried to debate what would make this better, after all of 2 minutes we all agree this was a 10/10 trip all made perfect by the people and the place.

Thanks again guys for your wonderful hospitality, as soon as we can talk our wives in to letting is do it again we will all be back.

After a number of visits to Siargao Island over the years I would find it hard to stay anywhere else but Sagana. From the moment you are met at the airport until you wave goodbye it's an escape that will stay with you forever, switch off relax and enjoy the amazing views and hospitality that always come with a free smile.
With words of wisdom from Gerry on surfing, golf or fishing or amazing travel stories from Sue you always feel at home.
As someone who travels extensively I find my time at Sagana more like being around friends than being a holiday.
Its more than just a surf destination, it's a way of life!

From the moment we set foot off the plane we were looked after and spoilt by amazing hospitality, spectactular views and quality waves.
The rooms at Sagana are huge en-suites, clean and spacious! The food served there is outstanding, but the best thing was the hospitality, nothing is too much to organise and Gerry and Susan will try and make your stay the best one ever and for me it truely was paradise. We can't wait to go back, white sandy beaches, warm tropical water and beautiful sunshine.

Soooo not being the most fwd of planners, my trip down to Siargao and Sagana was relatively last minute. That said, from first point of contact until stepping back on to the departure shuttle, it's clear that Susan & Gerry have a intuitive understanding of what hospitality is all about.
- Need a surfboard? Got you covered.
- Snorkeling gear? Here's some handy.
- Last Minute boat trip to nearby sites? Not a hassle at all...need a lunch to take with?
If you want a great experience where it all just 'comes together' here's definitely where you should stay.
Cheers and see you guys again!

Susan and Gerry made this trip much more memorable than it was already certain to be. Getting out of the hustle and bustle of the major cities and hiding out in small surrounding islands is the only way to truly experience the Philippines. This alone is guaranteed to be a memorable and amazing experience, as our entire trip was. We spent five weeks in the Phillipines, travelling from north to south and east to west. Now back home, a couple months after our trip, only one spot truly stands out as the highlight of the trip. Sagana. From the service, to food, adventures, to the rooms (plural, we tried out two, in what was initially supposed to be a 6 day stay, turned into 10 when we just didn't want to leave.) We couldn't have asked for more. I could go on and on, but think its just better that if your heading to the Philippines, definitely go to siargao (especially if you surf) and you MUST stay at Sagana. Comfortable, casual, clean, knowledgable, and inviting. Thanks to Susan and Gerry for making our stay so lovely.

As a previous review has stated that this place is now got new owners and is called Alon Resort. After the great reviews we were expecting a different experience. Not that what we experienced was bad but it was a little weird. I think the resort has a different feel to it now. There is a Manager running the resort, Mika (who is very nice) but it does not have the vibe that is described in the previous posts. There was a family living at the resort as long term guests and it felt really weird as they had sort of taken over the place. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and our daughters particularly liked Edna’s cooking however to have dinner we had to book in advance. Again a little weird as we are use to staying at places that have a restaurant or not. The location is good being right at Cloud 9 however the bar across the road is a bit noisy at night going till about midnight. We love the traditional bungalow places to stay rather than the fancy resorts however for the price I think Alon needs to make some improvements.
