Owner greeted the team who have stayed there for many years, my first time. General appearance of property is that it needs a face lift. The power was cut off down the road and so a generator was running from 6:30 to 12:30 each day. Had 2 different rooms, one had an excellent shower the other dribbled out. However, this is not a 5 star rating but the rooms were adequate for my needs. Breakfast always had a good choice although some items were not a typical english breakfast. Fish fingers were brilliant. There was always a long wait for evening meals but there was no hurry, something one has to get used to in Uganda. The outside areas were peaceful. All the staff were polite and helpful. I have no problem with returning there on my next visit.
Stayed for 5 nights. Slightly off the beaten track, with security guards on entrance. Outside seating, able to cater for groups Breakfast was basic, 2 cereal choices, some fruit and some hot choices. Goat isn't something I would consider eating at 7am Rooms - lacking in decoration, and water pressure very hit and miss. Two days I had none - which when working in heat, doesn't bode well with business partners Mosquito nets are available but I suggest you get a mosquito plug in / spray repellent Wifi is available - but again it depends on where your room is ie main building Mornings were noisy - staff setting up breakfast from 6am
I was delighted to be staying here during the week for fortnight while teaching in Mbale. The Sunrise is a peaceful place with great service and lovely friendly staff. It really is my home from home when I'm in the area. The breakfast sets you up for the day and the food in the evening is worth waiting for as it is cooked from scratch. I totally recommend the Talapia and chips!
I am sure that 20+ years ago that this may have been the place to stay, but it has been allowed to "run down" and is very average. All the basics are provided, but I found staff were not able to speak English and slow to take any initiative.
for a cheap comfortable clean and friendly spot to stay this place is worth a try. it is only 10 mins from the town centre but is quiet and secure (versus the bus station and town market noise!). On a boda or taxi it's easily accessible. Good breakfast and other meals available. I had a single room which was a three quarter bed and very comfortable with en suite bathroom. clean, internet was a bit patchy - but then it is anywhere in Mbale. good deal.
